View Full Version : HTPC - TV - Entertainment Center - or lack thereof

I just bought my first LCD TV. I am upgrading from a 20"CRT. I would like to mount this TV on the wall. I would like to connect a HTPC to this TV. I am planning on using something like this patch panel (http://www.datapro.net/products/custom-wall-plates.html) mounted behind the TV for all of my connections. I don't want any wires showing and I plan on mounting this panel recessed into the wall. The PC will be mounted onto the unfinished basement ceiling. I am concerned that the cables will be too long. The distance will be roughly 7-8ft.

These are the connections I would like to run from the PC to the patch panel.

DVI
HDMI
VGA
USB
Firewire
Multi Card Reader (SD etc.)
Blue Ray drive (SATA or IDE) - mounted flush into the wall perhaps at an angle? unsure
eSATA connection
Coax cable (for tv signal if needed)
PC power and reset switches (reboot from upstairs if needed)
*plus any other connections that may be handy.
*Also in the patch panel will be a power outlet for the TV
*Audio? have not put much thought into this yet. I plan on using the TV's speakers for the time being.
*Also I am probably missing some kind of other connection... fill me in if you got any ideas

So from the HTPC in the basement to the patch panel and from the patch panel to the TV. Do any of these cables have a length limit on them that would hinder my plans?

Why all these connections you might ask? Well some are obvious... First thing is I won't have a noisy PC, no cables (not even for power) showing, and the ability to connect anything I want from upstairs as the need arises. Blue tooth keyboard & mouse (gyro?) connected by USB bluetooth from upstairs. Card reader for handy photo viewing. HDMI for video signal and DVI/VGA for the hell of it. I mentioned that the patch panel will be recessed into the wall. On the bottom ledge is where I would like the BlueRay/HD-DVD/DVD/CD player mounted. I think the cables might get in the way of the tray opening so I might have to come up with something else ie separate recess just for this.

I know I am just blabbing... But something else I would like is for my TV not to get stolen. Is there any kind of anti theft device I could hook up to the housing of the tv or mount like a steel cable?

Here is my planned PC build.
GIGABYTE GA-MA78GM-S2H 780G (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128090)
Upcoming 4850e processor 2.5Ghz 45W 65nm dual core ~$95 estimate
OR
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ Brisbane 2.2GHz @ newegg for $45.99 shipped
No video card initially
I still need to figure out what TV tuner to buy.... Seems that it is hard to find a rock solid review on ANY of these tuner cards. Please help here.
Antec Earthwatts.. 380Watt
Reuse old case - its in the basement who cares what it looks like - this saves a bunch of money.
Some sort of Blue Ray player... not sure yet.

I plan on using Windows Vista media center.. don't know much about that yet so hopefully it will serve ok.

Review.

Need help with cable lengths - can they all go for 6-8ft?
What mount should I buy for the TV?
What is the absolute best TV tuner card out there? Use with Vista media center.
What is a solid PC Blue Ray player I should get?
Am I missing any connections?
Any ideas on Audio?

Thanks in advance for any help I will try to keep updated with this thread often to answer any questions.

You should be asking your PC questions in the Home theater PC forum, like Wytchone said. Use the link below
