View Full Version : MTU Fails?
watsonte 03-30-08, 09:35 PM Okay I have a D-Link WBR-2310 router, I cannot pass the MTU test, however, I am able to get on XBL and play games with little to no issue...
Is there really a problem? If so, How would I go about fixing it.
formulanerd 03-30-08, 09:37 PM either forward the ports for the xbox, which will require the xbox to be on a static IP
or
enable uPnP

Okay I will look into that, I should have been more specific in my original post, I am using the wireless adapter if that makes any difference.
watsonte 03-30-08, 09:58 PM uPnP is enabled.
And I must admit I am a bit of a novice when it comes to setting up a network or setting up port forwarding, however, I do believe I have set it up properly and that does not seem to resolve the issue either.
Would a different router resolve the problem? I had used this without any issue inline with a Netgear router at my parents house but the minute I tried to connect to a Dlink router I have at my apartment I had the MTU issue.
I'm not sure how port forwarding could affect MTU size. I don't know what the 360 expects the MTU value to be for that matter.
There is likely an MTU setting under the WAN section of your router. If your internet access is via cable, it should be 1500. If it is DSL, it should likely be 1492, or even lower. You would have to check with your ISP.
shoeboo 03-30-08, 10:02 PM What type of internet connection do you have and who is you service provider? Generally, 1500 is pretty standard but some types (e.g. DSL) may need it set lower.

Funny you should mention DSL I have Cincinnati Bells DSL service, and I did try setting the MTU value to 1492, however I did not try going much lower than that...Currently it is at 1500
shoeboo 03-30-08, 10:14 PM It is definetly not 1500, here is a website that helps you calculate it. http://www.dslreports.com/faq/5793
If you decide on the ping method start at 1464 and work down. You want to make sure this is set correctly in your router as it can degrade your network performance (not just in live).
edit: Make sure it is set correctly in your router's setup (as said before, generally in the WAN section). You can also tweak your network card, but that wouldn't be needed for live.

Thanks for the link, went through the DOS test and found 1440 to be a working configuration, set that up with the router and sure enough the 360 passed all the tests...
Thanks for the help,
Watson
maximuslcd 03-31-08, 08:45 AM I also have this problem, I think alot of it is just x box live. I rebooted my router a while back and ran the wizard d-link di604 and everything was fine, nothing has changed and I just decided to run it again yesterday and ...failed. I too can play online with no issues, I have plenty of MTU, I think x box live requires like 1364? mine is set at 1492....it bugs me that its not right but I get tired of messing with it as I'm not a computer genius either.......

I would try that DOS program in the link shoeboo, that seems to have resolved all of my issues and eliminated all of the guessing when it comes to MTU values.
maximuslcd 03-31-08, 09:45 AM I have a tc optimizer program on my desktop, it takes you to speedguide.net, runs a test and tells you what to set your mtu at, I've done that, set it at the rec number and still...fail...mabye I need to reset the x box to factory defaults and try it again
Slordak 03-31-08, 01:47 PM You will fail the MTU test if your MTU is too low, i.e. below the minimum needed by Xbox Live (1364), or too high for your connection. If you are using a DSL connection with PPPoE and you have set your MTU at 1500, this is wrong. DSL MTU values should be more along the lines of 1492 or 1454.
maximuslcd 03-31-08, 03:06 PM I will run that test tonight, I know it was set at 1492...before I changed it:eek:.
formulanerd 03-31-08, 06:45 PM watson, just wanted to apologize for giving you misinformation, i wasnt thinking when i read your post, and i was giving you instructions for opening your NAT, not adjusting your MTU

Ah no big deal, got the issues worked out.... Now if I could get into a match on COD4 all would be well.
maximuslcd 03-31-08, 08:31 PM This is what I dont understand, nothuing has changed on my end, 2 weeks ago I ran the x box test and passed, now I run it and fail. I changed my largest MTU to 1492 on my optimizer and my router and it still fails...and on the optimizer program when I run it I get a prompt that says "please set max mtu to 1500 for accurate test"...I know that cant be correct...that means setting it, restarting the comp and everything only to fail again
