Atrocity

I originally posted this on the Playstation 3 forums but I got no help.
I recently moved my PS3 into the downstairs garage. I was using the built in wireless adapter to connect to the Internet and never had any problems. Now that I'm in the garage with the machine it won't let me download the update available and I can't get into the Playstation Store until I update. On my XBOX 360 I use a Belkin Wireless G Gaming Adapter Model: F5D7330 to connect to LIVE. So I thought if I moved over the ethernet cable to the Playstation 3 it would get that connection. I went through the PS3's Connection Settings and selected Wired Connection but it won't get an IP address. I also see that once I connect the ethernet cable to the machine it says that an ethernet cable is not connected. Is there a problem with using the game adapter on a PS3? What can I do about getting my PS3 back online as a "true wired connection" is not possible?
