My 60GB PS3 blu ray drive quit working & it's out of warranty. Sony wants to charge me $149 to fix this issue. Now I've seem a few blu ray drives up for sale on eBay. Is it possible to swap blu ray drives (as long as it's from the same 60GB model)? Or is there firmware restrictions that won't let this happen?

I remember seeing someone on here report that they had luck opening the unit up and cleaning the lens in the drive. Since you are out of warranty it can't hurt to try that route since you are willing to open it anyway to replace the drive.

I tried cleaning the drive but had no luck :(

How much cheaper are the drives and are they GUARANTEED to work with the PS3. Lot of "ifs" in that equation. It sucks but I say just pony up the $149.. but not before you try bytching at a few customer service reps. Hang up and keep calling back. Hopefully you can get one to atleast cut the repair fee by 50%.

EBay has a drive for about 14.99 at this time (no bids). It's a risk I know. But if nothing else works I rather just buy the 40GB with the smaller 65nm cell chip then spending $149. For what might just be a temporary fix (since they only give you a 90 day warranty after repairs are done).

seems like more and more people are having this issue. I'd start kicking up a stink on the forums everywhere. That is how the RROD on the 360 started out, and it eventually worked.

I agree. For somebody who has a console that is just over a year old and has to pay $150 to get it fixed, that puts his total investment at $750 just for a game console. People can complain all they want about the 360 and its reliability problems, but the warranty is second to none in the gaming world.

I have seen replacement lasers for sale online that may cure your problem, and perhaps the sellers may allow you to return them if they don't fix your problem.

I agree that is a lot of money. I seen a few lasers for $59 I just go ahead and give it a try. From what I've seen this issue is more common with the 60GB console (I might be wrong). Maybe it's due to first gen blu ray unreliability.

Well I won't be paying 150.00 to get my PS3 fixed. I had my receipt & box (a year old) so I packaged everything up. Took it back to walmart and guess what?! They gave me full price paid back for my PS3. So I purcahsed the 40GB (which I upgraded to 120GB) and I still have $200.00 left over :)

Hope you weren't planning on playing PS2 games, SACDs, or Rock Band (without the use of a USB hub) ;)

Should've gotten the 80GB IMO.

they took it back even though it was over a year, or did you not bring the receipt

Actually I did bring the receipt I just didn't point out that the system was a year old. So I'm leaning towards that they didn't check the date as they should have.

You lucked out on this one, either that or walmart has a very liberal return policy. I can only hope BB will do the same for me.

I've gone to Walmart and returned things I didn't even buy there. They take your info so, you can't make a habit of it. But, yeah, they have a liberal policy.

If you paid with credit card, check with them as many of them doubles manufacturer's warranty. You may be surprised when you find out that you do.
