They don't look like cracks in the MDF more like cracks in the veneer itself. Did it get wet or dropped by any chance?

Looks like the veneer is separating from the wood. Heat and/or moisture can cause this.

That's my vote: Moisture. And I agree, its not necessarily a crack in the wood but look more like a crack in the veneer due to expansion of the substrate (MDF or paritcle board). That stuff bloats something fierce when exposed to moisture.
Is it near a window that sweats, a bathroom, or an air vent?
it was brand new, out of the box :( I believe it's not brand new but a demo set they used to use it extensively....look at the RCA connectors.....heavily oxidized....

Oxidization is another culprit of moisture/age. Appears this thing saw some high humidity.
If you run your house to be comfortable, you should be alright. Depending on where you live, this means running a humidifier in the winter, or AC in the summer, though others should eb able to weigh in here.
It really is the same as any other piece of furniture or CE gear in your house and "shouldn't" require any speacial treatment. Of course this depends on where you place the unit, e.g. near a sweating window, heat register, etc.
