I'm looking for a budget sub (under $300) that will fit into a space that is 14.5" in height. The height is the main issue because the width and depth of the space are not as constraining. The room in question is a dorm so I don't need earth shattering bass but I don't want the sub to be "wimpy" either. The sub will mostly be used with music and movies. I've looked at many subs, but most tend to be taller than I can accommodate. Any suggestions?

BTW, the sub will go along with two infinity primus P152 bookshelf speakers and a Harman Kardon HK3485 stereo receiver.

I believe the Rocket tyke or X-sub should work for you, they are the only 2 small subs around that price range I can think of at the moment.

Don't forget a lot of subs can be placed on their sides so don't be tied down to height measurements.

Yamaha has some new subs that are designed for under cabinet placement:

Doesn't really help because most big subs are bigger than 14.5" in any dimension, and most small subs are cubes

If you can swing $400 or find it cheaper, you could give the Velodyne DPS-10 a shot.

Also, those Yammies above only have 6.5" woofers.

These are only .5" too big.

Some of the cheaper Velo's are only a 1/2 inch out also.

Do you own a jig saw? :)

You missed the point of what I said.

thank you for all the suggestions. vidmaven, I have no wiggle room so the 14.5" is pretty much set.

Does anyone have any experience with those small yamahas? They look interesting...

I'd go with this (http://www.edesignaudio.com/product_info.php?cPath=2_41&products_id=309&osCsid=5aee972e9e9e512f7f8c6e426ed9ef68) or this (http://www.edesignaudio.com/product_info.php?cPath=2_41&products_id=406&osCsid=5aee972e9e9e512f7f8c6e426ed9ef68). Those are not really out of your budget because the shipping is free. The brand is well known to have a great price/perfomance ratio so I'm sure those are not "wimpy" compared to anything else you could get in that price range.

I have another question that just occurred to me though. The spot where I am trying to put the sub is raised slightly above the floor (about 2"). Is that going to hinder the sub's output? Here's some pics so you can see what I'm talking about. The sub will go where the printer is.

Again, this is a small room so I'm tight on space. That's the reason I'm trying to fit the sub into this spot. As you can see in the picture, the thing also slides out so I figured it would give me easy access to the back of the sub if need be.

I have a sinking suspicion that ANY sub is going to rattle the crap out of that thing. I mean it's on bearings!!!!!!!:eek::eek:

If you really wanted to use that space you would be well adivised to remove that shelf and either place the sub directly on the floor (inside the metal frame) or cut some MDF and create a non-resonant shelf.

yeah, you're probably right about the rattling. It would still be nice to put it in that space though, so I think I'll just remove the sliding shelf.

Good idea. Also, don't forget you probably bought yourseelf that last 1/2 inch, though the subs that CADOB linked too are supposedly a HUGE value.

I actually have a A5-350 on the way myself.

you're right, removing the shelf pretty much solves my height problem and will make it easier to find a sub.

Is it worth it to go with the A3 - 250 over the A2 - 250? This is a small room so I'm the thinking that the A2 will be plenty.

Acoustech H100 should fit the bill at 250 shipped. It will have MORE than plenty bass for a dorm room, only outputs to around 26Hz or 26Hz which is pretty good but the subs listed above are supposedly tuned to 20Hz.

From my meager understanding of subs, more is ALWAYS better. :D

That said, the A3-250 "should" have a bit more longevity. Think about what you might need once you move out of the dormroom...no cash but a bigger space to fill. You can always turn the gain down in the meantime, and why I might consider that over the A2 even though it should be more than adequate for now. Or you can save the cash now and put it towards something else.

Definitely call the guys at eD as they are REALLY helpful, and spend some time in the eD thread.

A3 has a better driver ( Ov.2 vs Kv.2), a braced cabinet and a more powerful amp. Which should translate into slightly more ouput and slightly better sound quality. To me that'd be more than worth the extra $50, but your preference might be different.
If you can fit 17" height and wanna save some money Bic h-100 is a decent sub. If you can fit 18" height can go for a2-300 (http://www.edesignaudio.com/product_info.php?cPath=2_41&products_id=407) which would provide a serious output increase.

I agree with CADOBHuK, the A3-250 is probably the best option you have. To me, the extra cost is well worth it (A3-250 vs. A2-250), and I'm sure the guys at eD will tell you the same thing.
