I've seen this question answered before but I'll be darned if I can find it now that I need it.

When using 5/8 DD, what is the recommended length of screw to use with the 2nd layer?

I'm using 1-5/8" screws on the first layer. I guessing 2-1/4" minimum but I'm not sure of what sizes are readily available at the big box stores. I am going to use 2 tubes of green glue per sheet and I know that the glue is not an adhesive so I will be relying on the screws to do the job. I will be screwing into 2x lumber on the walls and the ceiling.

I'd like to go to the store tomorrow so a quick answer will be appreciated.

Thanks! Bud

I used 2" screws and they seemed to do a pretty good job. On the ceiling I used a larger # of 2" screws than I normally would have.

If I was going to do it again, I would probably use 2.5" screws on the ceiling and 2" on everything else.

Just make sure your screws are not long enough to reach and pierce any conduit or wires you have running through holes in your studs. That could potentially give you a nasty surprise and some shorted out circuits .

I believe the rule of thumb is to have as much fastener into the framing as you would in the material being fastened. 2 x 5/8" = 1 1/4" so that makes
a 2 1/2" fastener. Plates on the electrical holes is always a great idea especially when using longer screws as you're only going to have 1 3/8" of 2x4 before your screw enters the hole where the wire is run.

I always try to drill holes at 24" off the floor and then run up along the stud from there if necessary. It helps me avoid that area when fastening drywall.
