I have been using a 50" Sony RP LCD (Model # KDF50E2000) as my main TV in my living room since December of 2006 without any problems (viewed for 5-8 hours per day). All of a sudden today, it started to shut itself off; after approximately one minute of viewing, it would power down, only to turn itself back on after 30 seconds in the power down mode. Within a minute, it would begin the same shutdown/restart process again. It will do this over and over again as long as you keep the TV turned on. The green power light on the front of the TV will remain solid as the TV is viewable, but it will begin to blink the entire time it goes into shutdown mode (blinking is what it does normally when you first turn on the TV while it warms up).

There does not seem to be any problem with the lamp inside the TV because the warning light never became lit. My thought is that it is an electrical issue inside the TV. When I called Sony technical support (in India), the gentleman had me perform a hard reset on the TV, which just involved manually unplugging the TV, waiting five minutes, and then plugging the TV back into the outlet. The problem persisted. His conclusion was that my TV needed service, and he provided me with names/phone numbers of a few local service companies.

I just was hoping that someone on this site might have experienced the same unfortunate problem or knowledge of what could have caused this problem. Is it an easy fix or an expensive fix? Should I have the TV repair shop come to me or pack up the TV and take it to them? I have no extended warranty coverage, and the manufacturer's limited warranty has expired.

Thanks in advance for any help/insight that you can provide.

P.S. The TV was always plugged into a Belkin surge protector. I have tried both plugging the surge protector into a different outlet and plugging the TV directly into the outlets; none of this made a difference. I don't know if that would make a difference, but I thought that I should mention it just in case.

That is exactly what mine was doing when the lamp was failing. Replaced the lamp and it was fine. Seems like not many hours to have the lamp fail but those are the symptoms of a failing lamp. I'd try replacing the lamp before you schedule a service call.

Could it still be a failing lamp even if I am not getting any flashing or solid lights from the lamp status light on the front of the TV?
