View Full Version : Room started need advice on set up and room treatments
Well room is being sanded and such right now. I am setting up for 7.1 and will be using ED 6t6 towers and 5tc surrounds with A7S-450.
I was thinking of going FP but wanted 1080P and those are a bit expensive. So may have to suffice with my 42" plasma for now.
Here is where I am thinking of putting screen/TV. It is Pic #1 center it on wall and have towers of to the sides. Is it ok to spread them out far? The room is 20x20x10. It has a hangover with storage that will be boxed it that sticks out 4' and hangs down 4'.
Surrounds mid way and sur rear on back wall under hangover. Now what is this room treatments for HT rooms I can do? Never heard of this before and does it help out that much?
Room was gonna have carpet but if there is somthing for sound that is better I would like to know all this before I go further.
Here is some pics of work in progress.
First 2 are where screen/projector will go. It does have a shelf going on top but wall is large about 8'6" to top
Second is looking to the left with window.
Next is backwith overhang and

I wish you came here and asked before you started building because we would have advised against those dimensions. You can still get good results, but plan on a fair amount of bass trapping.

Acoustic treatment is a necessity in all HT rooms. Start here:

Agreed. You're going to have a LOT of modal overlap with those dimensions. Plan on good broadband in the corners, some on the rear wall most likely, reflection panels on the side wall, and completely killing the front wall.

Wow nothing like killing my HT hopes wow.
Made a ton of work for myself. Just great heh.
There have been many recent posts discussing room dimensions, and that even a perfect cube can be treated to sound good. So don't worry, you just need to put in the extra effort on the room treatment part of the home theater. You can do it! On the plus side, you have a nice large space for the theater, and can easily fit 10 seats and a 130"+ scope screen in your future expansions.
I will say though, that a perfect 1/2 cube is as difficult a starting condition as I have seen anyone post before. 20 x 20 x 10, ouch.
I will look at this as a challenge but definitely need to read up on and help treating it.
What is meant by killing the front wall?
Broadband in the corners?
I am wanting to learn this so bear with me. I like to know what I am doing and why not just how.
Then definitely put in the time and read the thread that is pinned on top of this forum. All your questions and more are covered. :)
BritInVA 04-01-08, 07:37 PM Yeah but 3000+ posts of which much of it is noise is going be hard going......that thread needs some serious acoustic treatment
I'd say just hire Bryan (Bpape).....you won't go wrong with that decision.
Will do just have not come to the terms listed yet.
BritInVA 04-01-08, 07:58 PM Killing front wall is usually accomplished with 2" Owens Corning 703 or Johns Manville Linacoustic. Broadband in corners is bass trapping which can be done with OC 703 or acoustic cotton across corners.
Take a look here (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=7986162#post7986162)but think full yellow OC 703 where screen is too.....was not done in this pic as was using drywall as temp screen.
Really comes down to how much reading and cutting out the irrelevant stuff you want to do but I still recommend paying for some advice from Bryan (bpape)......its not expensive and well worth it......wish I talked to him sooner.
Wow my head hurts.
Thanks for you info it really helps. All of ya. Nice bunch on people.
Still reading on :)
Well room is not really a cube it has a false wall that sticks out from the original wall by about 8" with a dead space and insulation so front wall where screen will be is 8'6 has shelf goes to original wall and up another 2 or so feet
Back wall is going to have a storage area about that stick down from the ceiling 4' and sticks out of back wall 4' So ceiling is oddball from the floor and will be 16x20 where floor will now be 19x20.
So its not a cube will the false wall and the overhead storage in the rear.
Hard to explain. But hopefully that makes it easier to treat that just a cube.
larlron 04-01-08, 09:26 PM Hmmm A7S-450 maybe I should of saved my money and put it towards this instead of what I did

Maybe you need a receiver more than anything :P
Just a question I cant seem to find the answer to. I read in that article wood/pergo floors are best for recording but says nothing about HT room.
Anyone shed some light on this?

You may want to post a diagram if you can. If nothing else pictures may do the trick. :)

Carpet is more common and usually preferred. A few years ago I considered replacing the carpet in my living room HT with a wood floor. As a test, I got a bunch of large cardboard boxes, flattened, and laid them all over the room on top of the carpet. It was definitely worse, so I left the carpet. You might try a similar test yourself before you go to all that effort and expense.

Got it I like the idea of carpet better
Well this should give ya better idea of what the room is actually shaped like with all the storage and false wall. And I just got it all primered and ready to run speaker wires. I made it easy torun speaker wires and such later as it makes it easier for me.
First pic is the overhead storage which will be the back wall. Which will be box in with nice wood and have latch openings.
other will show ya the false wall kicked out from original.
