i am a 18 year old high school student and i dont have a job yet. right now i am setting everything up in my basement which is quite large but i will be living in a dorm next year. i would like to keep it under $150 but i might be able to get a little more money. i have been thinking about the polk psw10, i love very loud and deep bass but i know i will not get that in this price range. i need one that would be good for gaming, movies, and music. i would greatly appreciate anyones help. so any ideas???

and so far i have:
a 32" samsung lcd
Sony's 6000 series tower speakers
Sony's SS-B1000 book shelf speakers
Yamaha HTR-6030 receiver
xbox 360

tiger, It will be tough to find a good sub for $150 and not likely to do a great job in a basement. I have seen the Polk you mention on sale at Frys for $99. Since you are going to a dorm soon (congrats BTW) I would look to save some more coins and ask for money at graduation this spring and get something like the HSU STF-1.

You could look at some of the DIY kits but I have no opinion or experience on these.

Do you plan on taking this sub to the dorms with you as well? Pretty much any decent HT sub is too much for any dorm I have ever lived in or been to. That said, the psw10 is on the weak side so it would be a decent choice for dorms, but not so good in a basement.

I believe you can get a Velodyne VX-10 in your price range.

For $50, you can't really go too wrong. Just don't expect to hear and feel the kind of earthshaking bass that people here frequently refer to.

For 50$ go with the polk and then save the rest for your next sub.

Your dorm mates are going to HATE you! A sub and a dorm room just doesn't mix. You'll be driving the geeks trying to study 24/7 insane...

and another question,
how important is it to have a sub that is magnetically shielded?

In you shoes, I would try to find out what's possible in the DIY field.
Otherwise, for under $150 I would probably look into used Klipsch subwoofers on ebay.
The stuff you can buy new for that price I wouldn't even bother with..

Yea no **** 3 would be nice but if one is all you can get I would jump on it. Save the extra cash and keep saving then picking up something truly special after college.

Btw I will pwn you at cod4 once mediacom actually gets of their asses and installs my ****.

Seriously... when I was in college all I had was a cheap boombox (like $50 cheap) and my next door neighbors (left, right, upstairs and downstairs) could all hear the bass when I would turn it up and complain. Any subwoofer at all I can guarantee will be heard next door in a dorm.

Links don't work for me but since it is a cable you mention look at monoprice. Can not beat the product or cost.
