OK, it's not surround, but it's "available again".
Ordered it about 9 months ago from Music Direct but never heard anything.
Bought something else from them about a month later, and they said "sorry, but we hadn't have that in a while", and thought it was canceled.
Imagine my surprise when it showed up the other day.

It's actually an HDAD, which means that even people without hirez players, and only a standard DVD player, can enjoy the disc @ 96kHz/24bit. DVD-A player owners can enjoy it @ 192kHz/24bit.

I did the exact same thing! Ordered from MusicDirect in March of 2007 (along with Turn of a Friendly Card). I thought both had been discontinued, but Turn showed up first, followed by I Robot a few weeks later. I was a bit surprised at first, but then thrilled that they were still being made. Now I have all three (along with Eye in the Sky).

I have the older version of I Robot that is 24/96. Is it worth the 20 bucks to upgrade to the newer 24/192 version? In other words, is the difference that dramatic?

In other words, is the difference that dramatic? To be honest, I am not certain that it is and HDAD and/or is 24/192. I was basing that upon the description of HDAD that is below the disc's description in the link locomo posted. Is your current incarnation an HDAD (2-sided) or simply a DAD (one-sided). Or is it maybe a DVD-A?

It's a DAD. When I first got it, I played it on a regular DVD player.

I think there is only one version of the HDAD - it is 24/96 on one side and 24/192 on the other side. The former is playable on 'regular' DVD players; the later requires DVD-A compatability. I detect no difference between the two sides.

I think there is only one version of the HDAD...............Right, but is there an earlier version of this disc that was simply a DAD, as 111R implies?

Or, maybe it is not really available as an HDAD. Do you actually have the HDAD or are you going by what the musicdirect site says in the link locomo posted?

Not to butt in, but the version I own is in fact a two sided disc. As the previous poster said, 24/96 on one side, 24/192 on the other. I guess that could rightly be called a HDAD.

As for sonic differences between the two.....not with my ears.

Brian, thanks for the input. I also have a few other 24/96 recordings that I could replace with the 24/192 versions, but it looks like there's no need.

I actually have it! On the spine of the disc is says 'HDAD 2003 - 24/192 - 24/96'. I also have APP 'Eye in the Sky' HDAD 2011 and 'Turn of a Friendly Card' HDAD 2006.

I was fortunate to be interested in hi-rez 2ch/mch music at the point when SACD/DVD-A were first introduced, so I have a number of recordings that are now either out-of-print or very hard to get (due to chronic mass-market apathy). Oh well!

There is definitely an earlier 24/96 only version. I bought it, along with Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition/Holst The Planets, back in March 2001.

While they were called DADs, they are technically just a video DVD with stills for the video and 24/96 PCM for the audio.

Frankly, I doubt any human being could tell the difference between 24/96 and 24/192. But that doesn't take away from the fact that the discs sound amazing.

I have the same version of "I Robot" and the newer "Eye In The Sky" with the 96 and 192 versions. Based on my ears and my equipment, my advice is to just keep your current version of I Robot.
