Just curious as to how these free previews work.....does anyone know if that is a provider-specific promo, or does the free preview come directly from Starz? If so, does that mean all cable/sat providers will have the same free preview on the same days?

It should be for everyone. Obviously, for some services, you may need special equipment to see the channels, but it's through the channel, not any specific provider.

So glad Comcast tells me this, I gotta get this info from places like this. At least I'm assuming it'll be for all providers, usually previews like this are. For previews they just turn off the encyption, so any QAM tuner can get the Starz channels, no cable card required during the free previews:)

That is not the case. They just set it so any box will be able to decrypt the signal and the on demand stuff becomes FRee as opposed to Free with subscription.

Bright House of Bakersfield carried previews of MLB Extra Innings and NHL Center Ice in clear QAM. I have yet to see a preview of a movie channel in clear QAM. I am hoping that the Starz preview will be clear QAM.

Can someone tell me how they learn about the free D** movie previews? I used to get flyers with my bill, but those never seem to come anymore. How do we find out about these opportunities?

That might be the case for you, but where I am they just turn off the encryption. That has to be easier than changing a setting so that EVERY box can receive something encrypted. If the box sees a channel unencrypted, it will tune it no matter what. And since it's unencrypted any TV w/ a QAM tuner can get it.

We had a SD version of Showtime in the clear for a couple months on 103-3, they must have forgot to turn the encryption back on after the preview:)

No preview here anyway OTOH Starz is included with my package I have been getting it on and off Mostly on since 1997.

From 65 to 321 to now 875 for the HD version

No wonder why I never thought of ordering Starz, same bad movies over & over looking ahead at this weekend's lineup. If you're a big fan of the movie "Catch and Release", "Next", "Stick It" or "Wind Chill", start calling off work now for your dream movie marathon! I see occassional decent movies on some of the more obscure Encore channels, but D* doesn't have those in HD

I haven't looked at the schedule yet but your post hit home. It seems like they always have the worst selection of movies during the Free Preview periods. Instead of convincing me to order Starz (or other premium channel), the Free Preview simply reminds me why I don't already have it...

If you ask me, Starz offers way more movies than HBO or Showtime. The only reason I occassionally subscribe to HBO is for their original programming, certainly not for their movie selection.

I'll take Starz over any other premium channel right now. Especially given they have four HD channels to choose from.

Starz also seems to get more of the movies exclusively that I want to see. HBO tends to go a long time in between movies I am interested in watching.

HBO's original programming has not interested me for some time. Starz original programming is so poorly written and acted that it is often unwatchable at least for me.

I have "Cars" set to record. I want to compare the quality of D*'s HD to the DVD since that has to be one of the best DVDs I've seen in a long time.

I'm watching it delayed as it records.

This absolutely restores my faith in D*. There's no question it looks better than the DVD. I keep pausing to check out the detail. Even the shots with lots of camera flashes following the first race avoid any real macroblocking.

If it looks this good at less than 20Mb/s, the BluRay has to look absolutely incredible.

yep...animation has an edge so its the best blu-ray ive seen so far....its looks like the cars are off the screen sometimes even.

Newb question. I don't have Starz normally. If I record a movie with my HR-20, will I be able to play it back tomorrow when the preview expires? I know that the PPV now has a 24 hour window.
