"open" style, over the ear, not sitting "on the ear"
AKG K701 (recently on sale, but currently a little above your budget)
Sennheiser HD595 (currently on sale at amazon.com)

I have the older Sennheiser HD580 model and love them. Very comfortable to wear for extended periods, remarkable sound quality

"open" means the ear cup is not sealed, someone sitting near you will hear the music, although greatly muted.
"closed" means the ear cup is not sound transparent. you hear the music, someone near you will not unless you are playing the music at ear bleed levels.

many folks believe to get the full value of high end headphones you need a supplemental amplifier just for the headphones. If you are plugging into the headphone output on an a/v receiver this is rarely the case. If you are driving the headphones with an MP3 player or low power audio source, the headphones will work but may sound a little dull or flat because the device just does not have the output power to drive them.
