I know that there are about 100 threads about this, but I have it narrowed down to two spots in my living room.
I should be receiving my A3-300 in a couple weeks and I would like your opinion on where I should place it.
Would it be better in the front of the room or in the back?
Thanks

What speakers are you using? What is their - 3dB point? Are they sealed or ported? At what frequency will you cross them over to the sub?

Right now all I have are speakers from an Onkyo HTIB. I'm not sure what the specs are. I will cross them over at 80.
I plan on upgrading to Paradigm Monitor 11s for the fronts and a matching center in a few months.
I will probably keep the onkyo surrounds for another year or two.

With the Onkyo HTiB speakers, you'll probably want to cross them over pretty high, probably around 120 to 150 Hz. They don't have much LF extension so you'll want the sub to fill in the mid and upper bass for them. However, when the sub plays mid and upper bass, (basically anything above about 80 Hz), it's becomes "localizable", (IOW, you can tell where the sounds are coming from.) Deep male voices, the sounds of gunshots, things like this with mid and upper bass content, will seem to originate from the sub. If the sub is off to the side or behind the listening position, having these kinds of sounds originate from the sub will be very distracting.
If you must crossover this high, it is best to have the sub up front, in the middle of the front soundstage. Then, if voices or other sounds "originate" from it, they'll at least be part of the front soundstage.
When you can crossover at 60 to 80 Hz, the sub essentially become non-localizable. Once you get the Paradigm Monitor 11's, (which have LF extension to ~ 48 Hz), you'll be able to cross over much lower and then other subwoofer placements will become available without the penalty of localization.

It makes since what you are saying. I recently upgraded the receiver to the 705 and ran Audessey. It set all my crossovers at 80. Do you think this is wrong?

is this thread still open? you said you had an onkyo htib speakers right?
is it the ht sr-800? how did you place your sub?
sorry for all the questions, but i have the same setup as you and my room is almost the same size and no matter what i do i can't get enough bass out of my sub, the weird thing is when i first listened to this system it appeared to have more power. please help me cause i don't know what else to try.

your sub probably is not powerful enough to fill your space, have you tried the sub crawl? may need additional subs.
