Drywallers came in today, and they had coarse screws for my metal studs and wood. I inquired (as I know that there are metal-specific drywall screws), and they were confident it wasn't an issue that coarse screws can be used with metal.

Any opinions or experience in this area? Any future problems?

I'm planning on testing few of the screws to see their holding - will let you know.

I just finished hanging my drywall and had a combination of wood and metal. The coarse thread screws weren't holding worth a flip on my metal so I wound up using the coarse on the wood and fine on the metal.

I would advise getting them to use 'fine thread'. They aren't more expensive. A couple of 5 lb boxes of 1 5/8 will cost you $35-40. Do it right the first time, that's the main thing.

I have used fine thread on wood, though, I must admit. I had a few spots where I really needed a 2.5" screw to angle into some corner and all I had was fine thread.

Fine for metal, coarse for wood. You can substitute, but you compromise pullout strength and sometimes they just won't work at all.

Well I tested some drywall on some metal with the coarse screws, and they work pretty well. I also tried to pull on some of the places that they screwed down (they haven't arrived this morning to 'mud), and it's not budging. I'm wondering if they used an adhesive as well - I did see box of drywall adhesive for metal and wood (definitely for the ceiling).

I'm surprised on the strength - I also tried some regular drywall, wood screws (fine, not coarse), and those didn't work well.

I feel good about what they did - hopefully, I won't have problems down the road where random spots of drywall begin to emerge from the wall.

Thanks guys.
