View Full Version : The (Original) Planet of the Apes - Monsters HD/Voom
I don't know if this has been posted before or even if it has been on before and I missed it. I love this movie. The best and original of the versions. Great actors, everything is backwards, a hot leading lady, Kim Hunter, and in the animal world primates are the closest anatomically to humans. This movie is one of my guilty childhood pleasures. Thank you Voom and Dish this will definately be going on the DVR.
Oh yeah, I forgot to add, uncropped OAR.
CycloneGT 04-02-08, 10:47 AM Go Chuck Go!
jaymerkramer 04-02-08, 10:50 AM It looks like they are playing all of the Ape movies over the next few days. I have Beneath and Escape set up to DVR. The first 3 were my favorite the last 2 I could do without.
CycloneGT 04-02-08, 10:52 AM Just need Soylent Green and Omega man and the Charleston Heston trifecta will be complete.
dcowboy7 04-02-08, 11:53 AM ....dont tell me the ending.
....dont tell me the ending.
I'll tell you my favorite ending, and you pick which of the trifecta film's it's from:
Chuck yelling in a crowd ".....IT"S PEOPLE....."
Bluto17 04-02-08, 12:24 PM That one just played on HDNet Movies last month, Ken. Looked pretty good in HD.
Just need Soylent Green and Omega man and the Charleston Heston trifecta will be complete.
Soylent Green was on HDNet Movies twice last month... Early morning airings.
Actually, FYI, Planet of the Apes "premiered" on MonstersHD last night at 8pm. Each day this week the next movie in the series premieres and there are several re-airings to catch up if you miss any.
JamesDax 04-02-08, 02:10 PM What is this MonstersHD you speak of? What another channel that Comcast dosn't have?
Marcus Carr 04-02-08, 02:11 PM What is this MonstersHD you speak of? What another channel that Comcast dosn't have?
It's a VOOM channel.
JamesDax 04-02-08, 02:13 PM Ohhh.. VOOM. Forgot they were still around.
audiomagnate 04-02-08, 02:17 PM I DVRd it. My daughter and I are going to watch it tonight. Can't wait. VOOM ROCKS!
NetworkTV 04-02-08, 02:54 PM Ohhh.. VOOM. Forgot they were still around.
The channels are, the service isn't.
choskyigragspa 04-02-08, 05:42 PM While I'm not a big fan of the genre, I did watch and DVR this last night. It looked great in (OAR) HD.
romanesq 04-02-08, 06:36 PM Hmmm, saw the promo on MonsterHD and couldn't take my eyes of the original POTA.
It looked great on my 106" screen.
One word: Nova.
She was so dreamy. :)
Grabbed it via r5000 on E* last night. How is it picture quality wise? I know they down rez to 1440x1080 and to use H.264. I can't wait to watch it tonight!

I saw this at a theater when it came out, and haven't seen it since. The PQ is very good, not excellent, but very good.
audiomagnate 04-04-08, 12:05 AM Sorry for the double post, but that was made after a five second sample of the recording. My kids really liked this film, and the PQ was excellent. oH, AND BTW:
TAKE YOUR STINKING PAWS OFF ME YOU DAMNED DIRTY APE!
I am now watching Conquest of the Planet of th Apes and I like it. OAR and uncropped, it looks pretty good. I have now DVR'd this one, Planet of the Apes, Escape From the Planet of the Apes, and Beneath the Planet of the Apes. The DVR is set to record Battle for the Planet of the Apes later today. According to Wikipedia this is all five of the theatrical releases from the original series. This is some good television.
audiomagnate 04-06-08, 12:16 AM Charlton Heston died tonight.
I watched all 5 of the apes movies. The original is one of my favorites with the others a rapid decline. As with other Dish Voom channels, it was 1440x1080i, bit rate averaged ~5Mbps. For an older 35mm film, it looked OK.
....dont tell me the ending.Too late; the stupid DVD cover gives it away. The standard-def one, anyway.
CycloneGT 04-06-08, 02:08 PM RIP Chuck. One of the greatest.
Knicks_Fan 04-07-08, 08:02 AM A great American and a great actor.
romanesq 04-07-08, 01:49 PM Charlton Heston: great man. Great American.
Don't know why the first one was only shown once that I could see. The other 'Apes' movies are reshown but I didn't get to see the whole first one or DVR it. Darn.
audiomagnate 04-07-08, 02:40 PM Too late; the stupid DVD cover gives it away. The standard-def one, anyway. And don't worry about CH....he'll be recycled. :D
That was a very tasteless Soylent Green joke.
The first ape movie Planet of the Apes is being reshown Thursday April 10 at 11:45am eastern, also Sunday April 13 at 2:45pm eastern time. I found this out using the search function on the DVR.
That was a very tasteless Soylent Green joke.
As an aside... I always liked the Simpsons "Tree of Horror" Halloween special where they spoofed Soylent Green with a prop. It was set in the future, and there was a box of cereal on the breakfast table, and on it was one of those "new and improved" splash logos... and the text said "Now with more girls".
It is kind of odd that Mr Heston passed away just after MonstersHD had ran all of the original movies over the weekend. Strange timing when these kinds of things happen sometimes.
That was a very tasteless Soylent Green joke.I edited my post; feel better now?
audiomagnate 04-09-08, 01:14 PM I edited my post; feel better now?
I actually thought it was funny.
dcowboy7 04-09-08, 02:20 PM Fox is currently planning to bow a Blu-ray Disc box set of not just the classic Planet of the Apes feature film, but possibly all four sequels as well, sometime in the 3rd or 4th quarter of this year. This would include at least some new featurettes and other extras. Word is Fox has even discovered the original ending from the preview cut of Conquest of the Planet of the Apes. All of this would be part of a 40th anniversary celebration of the original film.
...sweet.

I doubt Fox will spend a lot of time cleaning these movies up. The production value for Escape, Conquest, and Battle went way down compared to the first two. I remember seeing Planet and Beneath for $ 0.25 at a small local theater in the early 70's. I saw a lot of 60's and 70's sci-fi at that theater on Saturday mornings. Apes is still one of my favorite movies but the new one blew chunks.
I have the Apes "The Evolution" DVD box set, so I wonder whether this new BD set will be worth it. It can't be any worse than a $199 Star Trek TOS set.

My memory of this line is seared into my memory. When I saw the picture at the movies (I was a kid at the time), when he uttered the line, the entire audience gave him a standing ovation.
Never ever saw that happen again.

I was looking but didn't see it listed on Monster HD Cablevision here in NJ.
So I will look again. Thanks.

I have Dish. I forgot about Cablevision. With Dish it is easy to perform searches on the DVR.

The latest transfer of it doesn't have that same cover.
