I currently have a Toshiba 65HDX82 65" 1080i RP-CRT, and it has served me remarkably well for the past six years. However, with 60+" digital RP screens being priced so well toward the end of their shelf lives, I thought I might look into the current crop and see if there's something I might grab for the next several years while 60+" flat panel displays drop in price.
The current front-runners are the Mitsubishi 65" DLP, the Sony 60" SXRD, the Samsung 61" LED DLP, and the Toshiba 65" DLP (which may be impossible to find anymore). Here are my current thoughts:
Mitsubishi - This is probably the front-runner because it has the same screen real estate as my current TV, a six color wheel, and great reviews, plus it looks like it can be had in the $1.6K range now. My concerns are narrow horizontal field of view and potential for rainbows.
Sony - Overall this screen probably has the best picture and no possibility for rainbows, but I have a hard time getting over the smaller screen size relative to what I've had for six years now. I drew a template of a 60" 16:9 screen on my current screen it's a more significant drop in real estate than I'd have guessed. I suppose I'd get used to it over time, but if this were a 65" screen, I'd have jumped on it already.
Samsung - I like the idea of an LED DLP in terms of no rainbows, no bulbs to replace, etc., but I've read that the PQ isn't so great with significant hotspots. Also, because it's a 61" diagonal, it's subject to the same criticism as the Sony 60".
Toshiba - I'm attracted to the Toshiba because of how well my current screen has served, plus the $1K-1.3K recent deals have made it a STEAL for a 65" 1080p DLP! However, I'm not sure if it's even in stock anywhere anymore and it does use an older DLP tech than the Mitsu. Still, if I found one in stock for $1K, I think I'd snag it!
So understanding that TVs comparisons can turn into religious wars, I'd like to ask folks who have recently gone through a similar transition what they chose and why, if they dropped in screen size from an identical viewing distance whether it really made a difference, etc.
Thanks much for any insights!
