View Full Version : Is it worth knocking out the wall?

With lots of help from this great site, I finally ordered the last piece to my home theater (aka living room) setup.
Here's my dilemma: My volume is ~5500ft3 in my living room area which opens to the kitchen (~1600 ft3). I ended up ordering the Epik Castle and the only area it would really "almost" fit is in the front right corner of my living room. Problem is it would cover one of two heating/air conditioning floor ducts. After looking around this weekend I thought "Hey! why not knock out a hole under the stairway behind the hall closet?" I am sure I could just enter the void from the garage wall and then just put some kind of grilled opening into the living room. This would pretty much minimize any movement of the subwoofer for optimum placement. Unlike many of you guys here......I can't just put it wherever I'd like without hearing a consistent girlfriend nag. Would the area I have identified (red star) be that bad of a place? The sub would be firing into the room from the left rear under the end table. Thoughts? Thanks in advance and excuse the quick sketch (I hate MS Paint)!

HT setup consists of a 52" XBR4 LCD, Sony STR-DA5300ES receiver and Mythos Ones (Front L/R), Mythos Three (CC), Mythos Twos (Side R/L) and Mythos Gem XL (Rear R/L) with an Epik Castle sub.

A friend of mine has what looks like a similar setup to yours. He has a system in his basement. He did not want the sub "in" the room. There is a "closet" under the stairs leading down to his room. He put the sub and the equipment in that room. The equipment looks flush mounted in the corner of the room.
I mean, he did not cut a hole in the wall for the bass to escape into the room. He just runs it as is. He has a sunfire True subwoofer.

Sounds like an IB would have been better and saved you a ton of $$$'s.

Iv'e got one of my subs on top of an ac vent. If it really bothers you, put the sub on a subdude or even up on bricks. I can recommend the subdude. Got mine about a week ago and they seem to work.

Sorry..............what's an IB?

Edit- I believe you mean Infinite Baffle? Might have been a good route if I had that info earlier. Fortunately for me......wasn't trying to save money, just want great sound. I'll have to check the forums for the IB stuff.
