How does that work? My pro will be back from repair on Friday. 3 year warranty is still intact. I am selling it to some one on craigslist and going to buy a new Elite with in store extended warranty. That way I will never have to deal with MS again sending it in.

Pass on the receipt.

The warranty goes by the serial number on your xbox. They can check the build date by your serial number.

yeah, you don't even need the reciept.

I have needed repairs on my wii, my 360 and my psp. and the only company that requires the reciept is Sony. Nintendo is by far the best to work with.

Just have the new buyer re-register the console when they buy it. The MS service rep will ask for the original owners name and address. I have sent in a few different units for repair in the past and twice they let it fly even when I didn't know the OP's name or address, but better safe than sorry.

Thanks. I will probably just ring up support while the guy is here and change owner ship to his name/address.

One really nice thing about the 360 having a transferable warranty, is that it gives you the option of buying somebodies 3RROD 360 for super cheap off Craigslist. There is a huge advantage to buying a 3RROD 360, and then sending it in to service, rather than buying a used 360 that doesn't have the 3RROD.

I know that doesn't seem to make sense, but trust me, it's a much better option. Wanna know why....??

1. If you buy a used 360 off Craigslist, or Ebay or wherever, and it's more than 1 year old, it no longer has an all encompasing warranty. It only has a warranty on the 3RROD. So, let's say you buy a used 360 off Craigslist, and everything is working great for about 2 months. Then all of a sudden it won't read any discs anymore. It doesn't have the 3RROD, but it's also not functioning. In this scenario, you are basically totally out of luck. You have to foot the bill for any repairs, and pay shipping to and fro.

2. If you buy a used 360 that already has the 3RROD, then you are basically golden. You call 1-800-4myxbox and tell the guy that you bought a 360 off a guy locally, and it now has the 3RROD. They will ask for the previous owners info, and then they will register it in your name. Then they will start the repair order. In about a week or so, they will send you a coffin, and you send the 360 to them. They will repair it and send it back. It will cost you absolutely nothing out of pocket. BUT HERE'S THE KICKER.....

When they send it back, no matter how old the original 360 was, you will now have a full 1 year warranty on the 360 they send you back. All encompasing, not just the 3 red lights. Plus, you get a 1 month Xbox Live card. And, you still have however long is left on the 3 year warranty on the three red lights.

So, in actuallity, buying a 3 red rings 360 is the only way to go if you're buying used. (just make sure it hasn't been modded or tampered with in any way. Make sure the factory seals are still sealed and somebody hasn't opened it up) You'll get it dramatically cheaper, it will get the heat sink fixed, and you also have a fresh 1 year warranty covering everything. Sure, you might have to wait awhile to get it repaired, but that isn't that big a deal.

The only other way to buy a used 360, is to make sure it's less than 6 months old. This way, you at least have a 6 month all-encompasing warranty, and another 2 years of 3 red light coverage. Anybody that buys a used 360 that is over 1 year old, and it doesn't have the 3RROD, is taking a huge chance, because other things can fail besides the 3RROD, and then they will have to pay $$$ to fix it. Alot of people don't really think about this when buying a used 360.

If you buy the extended service contract from MS directly, it clearly states that it is transferable, requiring only written notice to MS.

I forget the exact section number but I looked at it last night as I am doing the exact same thing.

My pro rrod'd and I just got it back yesterday. I'm getting ready to sell it on e-bay as I've already upgraded to an Elite Falcon.

Relatedly, can anyone confirm that when you do the data transfer from the 20gb to the 120gb hd that the 20gb is truly wiped of personal info as the manual states? Don't want my XBL profile with CC info sitting on there for the buyer to take advantage of.

The 20gb will be erased.
You can check yourself. Just plug the 20gb back in, and make format it youself.
Also you can always set a pin for any xbox live account stuff from the 360.
