View Full Version : Quick question: Color window patterns on DVE-HD?

So I set out to try and set my Color/Tint using the methods from Tom's sticky guide:

Color

1. Point the colorimeter or light meter towards the screen and display a white window. It is important that you use a window, not a full screen.
2. Measure the Y value of white (this is essentially the brightness or intensity of the white window).
3. Display a Red window, and measure the Y value here as well.
You will notice that as you move the Color control up and down, the Y value of Red increases and decreases, but white stays the same.
4. Set the color control at the point where Red measures closest to 21% of the white reading.

Note: It is not really important you use a 75% or 100% patterns in this test, so long as you use the SAME level of intensity for both. Also, for some displays it is not critical that you use windows. Full fields will be fine. However, for plasmas and CRTs you MUST use a window.

Note the bold final sentence -- for my plasma I need to use window patterns. However, I can't find any window patterns for the primary/secondary colors on DVE-HD!! I see full-field patterns for the colors at 75% and 100%, and of course there are window patterns for white in the grayscale section, but where are the color windows?

I've looked in the 1080p and 720p patterns. Am I missing something?

Or do I just have to download and burn a new test disc?

I'm not aware of any of the JKP disks having color windows. So the short answer is that I suppose you would have to use another disk. The link in my signature is HD and based around windows. The windows are similar to DVE, but they are a little different size and don't include the JKP pluge. That just means that the Average Picture Level (APL) of the same grayscale window will vary a little bit between the two disks. On my TV it's completely irrelevant and the two disks are within measurement repeatability for my colorimeter and components, but just how much plasma varies depending on APL I don't know.

If you want to look into how much your plasma varies due to APL you could do a grayscale run with each disk to see if the measurements vary by more than what they would if you measured the same disk twice. I would guess that the APL differences shouldn't affect your measurements much. If the measurements would vary due to APL, then the color procedure would come into question because the colors have different APLs for the same size windows (blue the lowest and white the highest). Generally I would guess that you could get by using the 75% colors from the linked disk for Tom's procedure without issue (or for any comparing a color Y to white Y such as using the Delta luma displayed in colorHCFR), but comparing grayscale runs between the two disks could give some idea just how much your plasma varies depending on APL.

Thank you very much, that was a very helpful response. Good thing to know that I'm not going crazy trying to find color windows on DVE!!
