April 2, 2008 - Ubisoft and Tom Clancy games are like the peanut butter and chocolate of the games industry; the two go together naturally. Gamers who are already familiar with the Splinter Cell and Rainbow Six series have a new Tom Clancy game to consider this fall. Tom Clancy's HAWX (that's short for High-Altitude Warfare...X?) is flying onto PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 this fall.

Developed by Ubisoft's Bucharest Studio, HAWX lets you pilot more than 50 planes in dogfights across the sky. Set in 2012, HAWX imagines a world that has become increasingly dependant on private military companies (PMCs). With PMCs increasingly gaining power, we sit on the precipice of a global conflict. Sounds like a good enough reason to hop in your fighter jet and shoot down some bogies.

yea, i am not usually into flight games but the supporting ghost aspect really ads something meaningful to the game. i hope they do it right.

Hopefully, this game is going to be more Afterburner than Ace Combat.

Didn't we do this with Strike Commander back in the day?

That was a cool game though. Hopefully the designers do some research into what it would take to actually run your own private airforce and scale the squadrons accordingly. I want "guns guns guns" instead of "Fox one" all the time :)

it would be so very dumb if it wasn't. I don't have it, but my buddy does and the look of rage on his face if this 80 dollar piece of plastic doesn't work will both be comical and sad! :):(

The trailer looks cool.

It reminds me or those Jane's fighter sims for the PC that were out in the 90's. I used to love those games--very exciting to go on a bombing run flying an FA-18, get jumped by a a couple MiGs, be short on missles because of your bomb loadout, and have to finish the fight with your guns.

I hope they take the Ghost Recon approach and make things more realistic than Ace Combat. I'd love to see the planes have realistic weapon load-outs that force you to make decisions about what weapons to use in what situations. If they give you 30 missles plus a super missle that hits 10 different targets all over the place I'll be really disappointed.

if it's any consolation, you can tell him i still have a brand new Steel Battalion in the box, for the original xbox. it should work with it, and i'll let it go for $200, but that's negotiable... lol

If you like realistic loadouts and performance, have you tried Over G Fighters?

mm looks like it will be more arcadey to me from the trailers

spot the LGB bomb being dropped onto a tank - queue next part of trailer where you see it screetching towards the tank (rocket propelled !) mmm !

No worries. A Ubisoft developer confirmed it in a Q&A. You have to scroll down a ways to get to it but it is there. However, i recommend giving the Q&A a read. It's pretty informative about the game. But anyway, here is the confirmation

I was under the impression the game was focusing on anything but realisom from a gametrailers.com preview I saw months ago. The focus being on fun.
Example when you turn off the AI help your jet suddenly becomes more moveable.

Wow, not many folks talking about this one. I just got done with the demo. Its good, still has that ace combat feel too it. I really like the unassist mode though, Its very cool to see what your plane is doing in the air. It reminds me of that space computer game that came out a long while back where you watch your units flying around.

Ace Combat feel? more like ace combat clone. I have never seen a more blatant rip off of another franchise before. Everything, with the exception of the unassist mode, which is like playing Warhawk with pro flight off, is the same as Ace Combat 6.
Does Ubisoft really think they will get away with this? Also, does anyone else find the other pilots that talk to you during the missions really annoying?

JeffChap

Any resemblance to actual flight is purely coincidental. If I were Tom Clancy, I would kill myself.

IAMJoCanadian

Blatant rip off? Maybe not so much as inspired-by. I don't like the ridiculous bosses or fake locations of AC6. This seems more real world including more detailed ground mapping with the added bonus of a bit more maneuverability.

PS Don't expect a flight sim just think of it as a flying third person shooter

Wow, I just watched the 'XM' trailer on the web site and was incredibly unimpressed. There is NO flight model at work obviously. If you watch the 'cobra' type maneuver they throw in, what they model is basically impossible (looks to be a sudden 12-15G pull, instant stop and another negative 8-9G pull back over).

Sigh, why can't someone model something just a LITTLE closer to a real flight model into one of these?!?!? Falcon 4.0's flight modeling and realism dumbed down for console would be great..

PLEASE??!?

By the way, I'm a F-16 based flight surgeon with about 100 hours in the jet so I have a little knowledge about high performance flying. :)

OverG Fighters? I thought it was pretty decent sim/flight modeling wise.

From the sounds of things, this is an arcadey game made to be fast-paced, and not a simulation. Sounds right up my alley.

I'll check out the demo.

Ubi Soft bought Tom Clancy's name about 6 months ago so now he doesn't get any say whatsoever. I wish he kept the name so he could restart red storm and make realistic games again.

Anyone know how much he got?

IMO, they were running Clancy games into the ground when he still had control. It was almost like Madden with each Clancy game.

I dl'd the demo tonight, and it was HORRIBLE! The flight mechanics feel like something out of the 80's, and that "assist off" view has to GO! It's worse than trying to play RC Pro Am through a mirror!

Ace Combat it is. I may pick up Over G as well.

I played the demo for a bit yesterday and did not really enjoy it. I think it was too much like a arcade game. I really enjoyed the Falcon game for the PC and really wish someone could make a game like that for the 360 but I know that is wishful thinking.

I played the first level of the demo where you use the Assist-Off mode and wasn't impressed at all. Lining up your targets was very awkward and it all felt more like a second rate arcade game than a serious flight/combat game. The in-cockpit views weren't all that impressive either and I could see no visual improvement over Ace Combat 6, even though that game came out two years ago.

I'll continue to follow the game but based on this early look, its another disappointment from Ubisoft.

For someone now into sim flying games that all, I enjoyed the demo. Normally I can't kill crap in one of these games but this was cool. I liked the assist off view.

To be fair Ace Combat was next to photo realistic to start with.

But yeah, I was about to say you should all lighten up and take it how it is arcadey or not. Then I played it and felt the same thing. Definitely a pass for me

The demo runs at 60fps. It's incredible just how much more realistic a game feels when the framerate runs at 60fps instead of the typical 30fps.

Looks impressive though a bit awkward to play in that Assistance off mode.

I thought the demo was awful. In what flight combat game does 'assist off' mean 'external camera'? Between this and the disappointment that was EndWar (both in terms of game quality and units sold; it had to have been one of the worst selling titles of Q4, because there was NO ONE playing it online), I'm not really sure the Clancy brand should really try to focus on much more than the R6/GRAW/SC series.

I suppose we're beating a dead horse, but I agree with other comments here. Not a good game, but great looking.

I'm amazed at how much this looks like Ace Combat 5. Sadly the cockpit view of Ace Combat 5 is actually better than the one in H.A.W.X.

I tried to co-op with two friends, and we all wound up deleting the demo afterwards. I don't know how they were able to take a great looking game and make it dull, boring, and repetitive.

I tried the voice command and although it was nice, I couldn't figure out how to use it while playing MP. I'd love to see that implemented in more games.

I played it and enjoyed it enough. I think that playing through the campaign with friends could be a blast. It isn't a "sim" really so much as just a fun flight game. My buddy and I had a good time playing. I might rent it but I'm leaning towards buying it.
