Tried finding the answer but I've come uo short so forgive me if this is a repeat

I have a 50" Panny 700U. Will pro calibration result in better black levels or deeper blacks?

Maybe. Depends where the black level is right now. If it's elevated, then yes. If it's set properlly by you or submerged wrongly, then no.

This is where I'm confused. I guess what I'm asking is a pro tweak going to go into the service menu and give me blacker blacks?

Chris' answer was correct. It depends on what your set is at currently.

The "blackest" the set can be is limited by the technology. If you have your brightness turned down to it's minimum, as an example, you aren't going to get any blacker.

However, with it setup that way you are actually crushing most of your low level greys so the picture will look bad even though it is as black as it can be.

Greetings

Calibration is not going to re-engineer the TV for better blacks. That is limited by the technology. One does not go from what you have to a Kuro black for $300. That's not what calibration is about.

It's about getting your display to be the best it can be within its own design limits. (As accurate as possible.)

If you believe professional calibration is supposed to deliver something more than this, then you are not a candidate for this type of service.

Great and thanks for the help. I thought there were at least fine adjustments in this area. I'm perfectly happy calibrating the TV on my own. May not be perfect but it works for me. :)

Black level perception can be improved by regulating the ambient lighting in your viewing environment. Bias lighting is one method. Here's a link that offers some graphical illustrations of how this principle works: http://www.lottolab.org/Brightness%20illusions%20page.html .
