I own several Dolby Surround CDs, but I noticed that on a few of them there's an odd disclaimer under the Dolby Surround logo, which states that it will play in Dolby Surround ONLY on Dolby Surround processors, NOT with Prologic systems.

Isn't Prologic the same thing as Dolby Surround? I thought that Dolby Surround was the recorded format and that, while initially, the playback processor was called Dolby Surround, that they renamed it Prologic, then later refined it into Prologic II and IIx?

I'm a bit baffled. :confused:It sounds a bit better when I run the CD through Prologic, but it would sound dispersed anyway?

Anyone have a clue what they're on about? Thanks!

You got it right, just enjoy your CD's which ever format you play them back in. ;)

Dolby Pro-Logic added processing for steering the effects to a particular speaker, whereas regular Dolby Surround is just a Hafler-type matrix surround system.

Thanks, guys.

Ematcion: Can you elaborate on how that would differ in playback? Didn't Dolby Surround unfold the sound into 4 distinct channels (with some overlap)?

Dolby Surround's "surround" channels were actually in mono. With that in mind, I think the engineers would envision a different type of mix when compared to Dolby Pro-Logic, which has a lot more separation due to its steering logic. On top of that, Pro-Logic introduced a center channel.

Dolby Surround is used as a generic term for surround-encoded material in consumer formats.

Dolby Surround, Dolby Pro Logic and Dolby Pro Logic II decoders are all successively better systems designed to decode Dolby Surround information.

Thanks KMO...that's exactly what I thought...

And to try to clarify that the original logo for Dolby Pro Logic was "Dolby Surround" with "Pro Logic" on the next line.
