You know that feeling when you've blown tons of money and things left and right don't work as they should and you want to cry? :(

I connected my Mitsubishi HC1500 to my new Harman Kardon AVR-247 tonight via HDMI. I am stuck with the following serious problems:

1) When I watch the SD input from my satellite receiver (S-Video), it does this "shifting" thing. The image slides to the right a few pixels over the course of about a second, then jumps back to the original position on the left, then repeats constantly. This problem doesn't appear on component inputs (DVD, Wii).

2) I can't get the projector to display a 4:3 image (again, the satellite signal) even though the manual says it should. I press the [Aspect] button and cycle through AUTO, 4:3, 16:9, and REAL and all display as widescreen.

3) Now that I've hooked up an HDMI cable to my receiver, I can't get it to go back to outputting to the S-Video out. I've tried unplugging the HDMI cable and cycling power on both the receiver and the TV, and nothing works (ok so this is probably not the right question for this forum).

Help!

Do you have an HD sat receiver?

No. I was thinking of getting one later on down the road, but not yet.

Why should it matter, though? Can't the projector accept a 480i 4:3 signal properly?

Uh Oh, my hc1500 is on its way, I might have the same problem!!!!

Sounds like you need to read the receiver user manual.

If your signal is going through the receiver and won't display properly, the receiver must be upscaling the image and outputting 16x9.

Output over HDMI or s-video should be controlled by the receiver as well.

I'll find your manual online and have a look.

Bingo! Thanks! I had no idea that the receiver would be involved. On your hint, I poked around in the settings and found I could change the video for this source from 720p to 480p. If I then changed the projector's aspect to 4:3 from "auto", then it works without stretch-o-vision. One problem solved!

I still have problem #2 though.

Alot of these problems are impossible to resolve unless we were physically there to see what's going on. The only thing I can tell you is that it's usually the cable box and not the receiver that controls aspect ratio. There should be a button or menu item on your cable box that allows you to cycle through aspect ratio.

Good luck!

Good luck!OP said he had an non-HD STB. Should only be one aspect ratio.

sremick, what is your sat receiver? I'll get looking at both and we will figure this out yet!

You could try a system reset just to see what will happen but that will dump all your user settings if you have run a configuration on the receiver. I'm still looking for more details.

To reset the AVR 247, place the receiver in Standby mode (press the
front-panel Standby/On Switch so that the Power Indicator turns amber).
Then press and hold the front-panel Tone Mode Button for at least five
seconds until the RESET message appears in the display.

***** NOTE *****

*A system reset erases all user configurations, including
speaker and level settings and tuner presets. After a reset,
you will need to reenter all of these settings.

sremick, what is your sat receiver? I'll get looking at both and we will figure this out yet!Just the plain vanilla 311 model Dish Network receiver, hooked up via S-Video.

Also: What do you mean here by TV? Please explain how everything is hooked up.Well, when I was having problems with the HDMI to the projector, I figured I'd try switching back to the 36" CRT TV which was hooked up via the S-Video out on the HK receiver. However, having used the HDMI out on the receiver, I could not get the S-Video out to work again. It'd flicker as I'd switch sources, but no video. No amount of removing the HDMI cable, cycling power on devices, etc fixed it. But I've decided that I'm happy enough with the projector now that I've removed the TV from the picture, so that's a moot issue now.

You may also want to look at these two links:Yeah I knew about the update... I'm currently trying to scrounge up the proper cable. Nothing in the notes though suggests that it'll fix this particular problem though.

As far as that 100+ page thread... nice! Thanks! I'm reading through it now, but with it being so long it's going to take a very long time...

Alot of these problems are impossible to resolve unless we were physically there to see what's going on. I understand. I've taken a video which demonstrates problem #1. You can download it here:

http://vtbsd.net/screen/MVI_0216.AVI

I put a little marker on the screen to make it easier to see the shifting.
