I realise that the sunfire hasn't been around for long but it seems like a high powered, high excursion design. I will be using my sub for HT duty so biggest punch is what I am looking for. Obviously th fathom is ideal in this form factor but just can't swing it right now...

In these forums SVS is good and Sunfire evil. ;)

They are quite close in displacement, the SVS uses in my view better quality components and is a slightly better buy.

The Sunfire HRS12(D12) may be a better buy if you get one at a very good price.Sound quality both do a great job,output...slight advantage SVS.

Very interested in this comparison...
Never heard any of them, but from specs alone:

SVS SB12
+ better match for satellites, stays flat up to 200hz.
+ quality finish options (veneers, real piano black)

Sunfire HRS12
+ a little better for HT, goes down to 18hz.
- fake piano black finish

I am trying to fill a fairly large space for HT (i know I know, just sold my fathom because it didnt't fit) So just by looking at them it seems that the higher excursion woofer on the Sunfire would be better for my needs.. but would love to see some real world feedback

If all you really care about is HT then get a used Sunfire True Subwoofer or Signature version for higher output (they are quite clean, really). They are bulletproof, will play a lot louder cleanly and go lower.

The only down side is the reason I sold my True Subwoofer. The auto on input level is fixed and it is after the volume control on the sub so there is no way to tweak its threshold for a given output volume at either the input level from the source or with the volume control on the sub.

You can get a used true sub for the high $400s or the Signature for a couple of hundred more usually.
