Anyone tried this in a Linux media PC? Myth?

Wow. Now it looks great in your link but taking it a bit further, you can see just how small this sucker is..I didn't realize it until I saw this video:

Wow! I think I need me one...
Several reviews are up all with very recent dates. I'm not sure if it will work in Linux. I've had mediocre success with Bluetooth thus far. It is stated that the keyboard is pre-paired with the dongle so that may make it easier or make it impossible in Linux.
Thanks for the heads up!

According to this
http://packratstudios.com/index.php/2008/03/18/the-logitech-dinovo-mini-does-work-in-osx-and-nokia-n800/

it works in Linux, just use another Bluetooth USB dongle that's known to work on Linux

Hopefully this form factor will become more popular, and lower cost alternatives from other manufacturers and lowball Asian knockoff outfits will be produced by the end of the year.

I hope IR keyboards in this form factor hit the market in response. I prefer IR with stock PS2 connectors for the mouse and keyboard ports on the receiver.

The big problem is that Logitech does not support Linux. I also can't stand "mini-keyboards", they just don't work for me (my problem).

I also have a problem with adapters that plug directly into USB ports - I have one (MS PC) with one (non bluetooth) that is worthless since the USB connector is now loose (it got bumped on my laptop). I should have used a USB extender.

tivo1 -- That's encouraging. Are you using the included Logitech Bluetooth adapter, or a different one? Unfortunately, I have a Logitech Comfort Cordless KB (RF USB link) that I really like. I haven't tried it on my Ubuntu (7.10) laptop yet, but I checked and there are no Linux drivers for it.

Rgb -- Maybe we should start an email campaign to Logitech for Linux support of their drivers. BTW, do you know of any bluetooth adapters that we can use with USB peripherals (wishful thinking?)?

That thing's entirely too small. I might accidentally swallow it or something :p.

I'll stick with my Gyration kb/remote, thank you. :D

You don't need Logitech-specific support as long as it's Bluetooth which works fine in Linux. I set up a M$ bluetooth kb/mouse a while back. You can even set up a bluetooth phone as a remote control.

CT: I used the included blue tooth dongle..
A couple things though:
sometimes in the bios one does have to enable usb kb support
but straight out of the box the keybord worked no biggie..
but the mouse was another issue, you had to patch the current kernel...

but the new kernels support the mouse touchpad so if you recompile and/or upgrade your kernel its all good...

Thanks for the reports- I think I'll skip the DiNovo Mini and wait for similar form factor alternatives with IR and standard PS2 ports on the receiver. I hope there are <$50 alternatives in this size later this year, with backlighting- perfect for dark theaters

I'm using the DiNovo Mini with my Gentoo/Mythtv setup with no problems and love it!. Of course I use a real bluetooth usb adapter not the one that comes with it. I did this with my Edge as well though.

No issues with the "mouse" pad, i.e. directional accuracy or sluggishness?

I got mine today - Any suggestions on getting the mouspad working? I tried the usbquirks workaround at kernel load to no avail. I do not have another bluetooth adapter and will not get one. Keyboard portion is perfect. Nothing on the mouse. No events seen by xev. The thing is indeed tiny. Not bad to thumb type on. For $150 though it sure feels a bit cheezy. It's crazy that one of the most expensive components of my new HTPC build was this keyboard!

An update. I just updated my Ubuntu to 8.04LTS recently (almost a week now). In going through the System ==> Preferences ==> Keyboard menu item, I noticed that it includes a lot of Logitech cordless keyboard/mouse support. This includes the S510 KB/Mouse combo - we have 2 of these. My Comfort Cordless KB/Mouse is not specifically listed, but since it uses the same (it looks the same anyway) interface as the S510, I'm going to have to try it, at least. Now, I won't have to go with the diNovo mini version, which is just too small for my fingers.

BTW, 8.04 now includes a touchpad lockout for laptops. This eliminated the problem I was having with my HP laptop (my thumb kept triggering mouse motion & tap inputs as I typed - I'm using a USB mouse, since it's handier).

Anyone here know hot to fix this. I installed this stupid mini and it was working fine. When the computer went to sleep and woke up it reinstalled the Bluetooth as USB hub and now the keyboard no longer works. I can't get it to reinstall as a bluetooth device. Any help would be apreciated.

Good find but the Dinovo Mini isn't on the list (nor any other Dinovo device). Seems the latest Ubuntu they support is 6.06 and Gutsy nor Hardy work. I get the feeling they don't update the stuff very often!

I'm using one with a d-link bluetooth adapter i had laying around. I'm using ubuntu 8.04 hardy, i love this thing. the mousepad isn't supper accurate, it can be a little touchy, but its definitely usable. i love the fact that you can switch the mousepad to work as a directional pad.

my only complaint would be a lack of some keys that are nice to have, like ~ and the F-keys.

I also haven't gotten the media buttons to work in XBMC yet, but i haven't even tried yet.

Man it's a shame we can't get the mousepad to work with the included dongle. Vista is getting too much screen time on my htpc because of it!

Here's the solution for Ubuntu and likely other distros. I gave myself a big slap in the head when I saw how dumb I was.

Add the following line to /etc/modprobe.d/options

options usbhid quirks=0x046d:0xc71f:0x00080000

(which we knew already)

AND THEN

update-initramfs -u

reboot or rmmod usbhid and modprobe usbhid. The update-initramfs isn't necessary when manually modprobing the module.

Since the usbhid driver loads from initramfs, unless you update it, it just ain't gonna see it.

Enjoy your mousepad. Works great for me :)

Hello. I have same problem with dinovo mini, mouse isn't working but keybord works. I'm using ubuntu 7.10. I did all thoso commands and added line to /etc/modprobe.d/options.... But it didn't help

How to solve this? I'm using dinovo mini's own bluetooth adapter.

Help please, thanks ;)

Since you're on 7.10, the kernel is different than what I have so perhaps the actual usbhid quirks line is different? I'm sorry, I don't know and I don't know where the actual hex number can be found..I went looking for it once and didn't find it. You are rebooting, correct?

Yeh, I got it working :)

I used this line: options usbhid quirks=0x046d:0xc71f:0x00200000
So I changed 8 -> 2 and now mouse works.

[I appologize for cross posting this.. its not my style, but I do not know which thread is the official "logitech dinovo mini" thread.. this thread seems to be the most up to date]

I am in the market for one of these lil keyboards. However, after some of the troublesome reviews i read here on AVS, logitech forums, newegg and amazon.. I have gone from "i cant wait to get one" ... to.. "maybe i shouldn't bother"

Does the latest iterations of this mini keyboard still have all these lockup issues, connectivity and down direction button issues? or did they get the kinks worked on in last few months? Can you update the firmware software like we do for the logitech harmony remotes?

This thing would make a great partner for my harmony one.. i would like to pick one up very much but not if its going to be nothing but trouble.

For those of you who got the replacement keyboard from logitech did it fix your issues, or do they persist?

For me the bottom line is I really want and needs a small foot print keyboard.. all i really wanna know is will it work for that? I wont be gettin keyboard delay will I? The mouse not working properly is something I see come up again and again and this doesnt bother me.. I can go buy a logitech mx air if I need a home theater mouse. I will likely be using a D-link bluetooth adapter that has a usb extension cable (i think some of the connectivity issues people express is largely do to the logitech usb adapter becoming slightly ajar and dropping connection, then your forced to reset you keyboard by yanking the battery.. I am not sure .. its just a technical guess. Anyone have more clarity on the topic they would be willing to share it would be appreciated.)

Thanks in advance for the help.

Several posts in this thread says the DiNovo Mini "works fine" in Linux. Perhaps you should try one from a local brick and mortar with a good return policy to see if it works well for you, and report your results here for the benefit of the forum.

Ya i am very tempted to just take a chance on this today. I would prefer to buy online for 119 then locally for 150+tax (if i plan to keep it).

I may just get it online and hope for the best. I have a hunch it will be find as a keyboard it just may be a very quirky keyboard. If i do end up buying it, I will definitely let everyone know my results on Windows & PS3.
