The SD 16:9 pre game looks bad today. The video is more soft and blurry the usual.
I think the stat ticker at the bottom of the screen is also why to high.

NYM @ ATL Starting. Video looks ok. I'm still getting the FOX Swimming Grass Digital Compression Effect on main pitcher batter cam.
Graphics look SD.

videojanitor 04-05-08, 04:03 PM Pregame looked about the same as always to me. The game I'm getting (LA vs. SD) looks about on par with the previous FOX MLB HD efforts -- that is, lacking in resolution along with visible compression artifacts. And in 2008, still no HD graphics ...

Watching White Sox / Tigers in Detroit from WJBK, via Comcast and it looks great.
I agree that the ticker during the pregame was way to high.
FOX has finally changed the MLB fox box look to match that of the NFL and NASCAR.
Swisher33 04-05-08, 04:18 PM Watching the Mets-Braves game on WNYW and well, no surprise here, PQ is like crap as usual. Great to see FOX did nothing to improve their HD over the offseason. Way to go. Damn, I wish this game was on SNY.
jefbal99 04-05-08, 04:19 PM WSYM OTA in Lansing, MI looks great, but doesn't seem to be 5.1. Getting announcer audio from the rears
CNiles3806 04-05-08, 04:46 PM WNYW here in NY looks like garbage, when you consider I just finished watching the Yankees on YES HD, and then switching to this its pretty obvious the poor quality. Is this actually HD today. It looks washed out.
I'm not a fan of the blue line at the top of the Fox Box. I have also noticed that the count is not always displayed.
Mets-Braves looks really good on Comcast in Richmond, VA.

A very poor attempt at HD, I'll say.
sansri88 04-05-08, 05:49 PM Also watching on WNYW-DT via Comcast. Boy what garbage this crap is.
WNYW via Cablevision watching NYM/ATL.
Is this really HD, or the same 480i upconvert we're used to with FOX? If you ask me, I'd say the latter.
I WANT MORE 04-05-08, 08:50 PM And the worst part of all of this. You have no choice but to watch your own local Fox crap. No EI all afternoon.
humdinger70 04-06-08, 12:18 PM I recorded the Dodgers/Padres game (XETV via TWC), and wow did they get off to a rough start. Initial video looked like crud (still 480P widescreen?) and talk about lip sync issues - during pre-game, Matt and Erics mouths were way off what they were talking about!
But it all cleared up once they went to commercial - when they came back, the player announcing the Dodger lineup was clearly in sync and the picture looked much better too. Looks like they give the equipment a good whack and/or tightened any loose connections between the local HD facility at Petco and the Fox truck.
Dodgers wished Jake Peavy was out of whack that day also!
mikepier 04-06-08, 12:22 PM WNYW via Cablevision watching NYM/ATL.

From what I've read, all FOX games this year are in HD. Unlike last year when only one Sat game was in HD.
kevin j 04-06-08, 09:26 PM The Whitesox-Tigers game yesterday looked good but tonights game on ESPN2 looks even better imho.
icemannyr 04-07-08, 01:27 AM During the NYM @ ATL game it was raining and a little foggy so that made the PQ look worse.
paule123 04-07-08, 10:04 AM I didn't get to see this, but you guys are saying the Fox MLB pregame show is STILL in SD ? Are they still not finished with that facility in Houston (or wherever it was) that was going to allow them to do more HD ?

The facility in Houston is for FSN, not Fox Sports.

Yes, and just to expand on what was said above, the pregame show is done from a studio on the FOX lot in L.A.
Donnie Vie 04-07-08, 05:40 PM I will find out for myself this weekend.
Yankees vs red sox on Fox. Looking forward to watching the game in HD
rkunces 05-31-08, 06:10 PM Watching the Mets/Dodgers game and it looks like garbage, as do the studio highlights of the other games.

Maybe it was the feed to that game. I was watching the Reds/Braves game and the picture was fantastic. I kept thinking that baseball in HD is great. Didn't watch the pre game show, so I really can't comment on that
FOX MLB pre/post game is not HD, it's 16:9 SD upconverted to 720p at the network, before distribution. Same as NFL pre/post game, FOX Sunday News, most reality (not American Idol, which is HD), COPS, Nanny 911, and a number of other FOX programs.
In general, what is HD is all the filmed episodic programs (drama, comedy) and live sports. If the pre/post event for live sports is on site (as opposed to studio), it too will be HD.

The problem is, you've got viewers with different equipment and different perceptions of quality. Thus if ten people are watching the exact same feed, you will get ten different assessments, which can indeed range from "garbage" to "fantastic." Their opinion is correct ... for them.
I saw the Mets/Dodgers game ... I personally would not call it garbage, but also wouldn't call it fantastic either. "Mediocre" comes to mind, which is pretty much how all FOX Sports looks to me. The frequency response is seriously limited (speaking of the network broadcasts here, not the RSNs).

I watched the highlights of the games on Sportscenter and thought they looked much better than watching the games live on Fox. The picture is very lacking and I expect a better picture than what Fox is giving us.

I am in total agreement that it is lacking -- and has been since, oh, they started showing sports in HD. I've yet to see any of their sports that looked like what I expect from HD. I just thought "garbage" was a little too harsh.
cube799 06-07-08, 04:12 PM I'm watching the Cubs VS. Dodgers game right now, and look HD. What i find Ironic is that they show an HD commercial showing a really clear HD Baseball game, on an HDTV. If only the game on fox could look like that.

Well you can't compare the PQ of a commercial up against that of a live program thats being broadcast over the air. Commercials are going to look better, they are generally shot on film which has a higher native 'resolution' if you can call it that, film can reproduce images more accurately (certainly in terms of exposure), they are timed, and color graded and mastered to look good. FOX (and live TV in general) does not have the luxury of a compression artist or colorist watching their backhaul compensating on-the-fly for every little thing that pops up on the air that could affect their PQ. What they can however do is find something better than having Richard Lewis reading the starting lineups. This is just so awful and cheap looking, he's like standing on the field with a mic and his hair is blowing around and the lighting is poor. I mean come on, put the guy in a room with a freakin light kit.
anyone watching Red Sox/Mariners? Not the best HD, but not as bad as it was a few weeks ago
rkunces 06-07-08, 06:07 PM This week's pq is better than the previous but I agree with you guys that the games still don't look as good as they could be.
Indians @ Tigers looks & sounds good.

I agree with that, but at the same time, he is correct that these baseball games (and every sporting event I've seen on FOX since the inception of FOX HD) just don't look good. Something happens inside the FOX TOC to low-pass filter them.
