Hello all,

I often see different test patterns but is really hard to find explanations of each. What are the objective, what we should be able to see and what not, what are the things we should look to give that pattern a use.

i´m going to post a couple of test patter and it would be great if some could explain each and a few tips of what we should look on different pattern and what they are for.

I do understand this forum is very advance and most in here are expert but i´m sure there are a lot of noobs like me who will find this very helpful

You are correct in your understanding of black levels. Let me do my best to explain what these patterns do. The first two are for setting brightness and contrast. To set the brightness level by eye, you want to turn it down low enough to the point where the below black isn't distinguishable from the black, but high enough so you can see the just above black ones. The white level one is used to set contrast, but on most digital displays it won't do much. Ideally, you want to set it so that the above white blends in with the white, and below white is visible. In practice, most will allow you to crank to contrast all the way and still be able to see the above white. A better practice is to set it to a level where white doesn't have a pinkish tinge and where it isn't so bright that it hurts your eyes. The ramp patterns are just a way of letting you see what the other patterns do--16 and below should look the same. The checkerboard pattern is used to measure ANSI contrast ratios I believe. The last pattern can be used to set color and brightness. With all that said, I believe the documentation for GetGray is very good. You might download it and see if it helps you get a grasp. Hope that helps!

Basically, yes.

Getgray has a manual that's pretty straightforward, BTW. DVE also has an in-depth manual that's fairly helpful. Also see the FAQ at the top of this forum, which isn't really a good FAQ but has a lot of helpful pattern use stuff pasted in there from Guy Kuo of Avia.
