View Full Version : Do Rechargeable AAs Charge w/ Play'n'Charge?
ahartig 04-05-08, 07:08 PM If I use some AA rechargeable batteries in my 360 controller and hook it up to to the play'n'charge cord, do the AA batteries charge like the play'n'charge battery does?
ie, do i need to take the AA out and charge on a wall charger when they are low, or can i connect to the 360 cord to charge when the 360 is on?
thanks.

Yup because I do it
Kliptik 04-05-08, 09:18 PM No, the play and charge will not recharge AAs. the power that is sent to the Microsoft battery pack is thru those little gold connectors, not the normal battery connectors. So you will need to use a regular battery charger... however you do not even need batteries or the Microsoft battery pack when you have the P&C cable plugged in.
ogbuehi 04-05-08, 10:07 PM Otherwise you would never need to buy the 360 rechargable packs. You could just use your own and use the current draw through the controller to charge any type of rechargable AA's.
sperron 04-06-08, 03:44 AM Not to mention that there would be the potential for damaging the rechargable batteries and possibly the controller. Improperly charging the betteries could result in a vastly shortened battery life.
FIVE ONE SIX 04-06-08, 05:58 AM basically, you can buy 4 rechargeable Energizer AA batteries with the charger for $20 at either Target or Wally World, so keep 2 in your controller and keep 2 on stand-by for when the ones in your controller need to be recharged...
Hell, my play and charge kit won't even recharge the battery that came with it (after a whopping 9 months of light use). Granted, I'm pretty sure it's the battery's fault, and not the charger. Nice batteries they package with that kit, huh?
Slordak 04-07-08, 02:51 PM To repeat, the short answer to the original inquiry is: No.

i have had the same play and charge kit since launch and it still works good, and i play a lot. saved tons of $ on batteries.
dbburns 04-07-08, 03:18 PM Yeah, if yours died after only nine months of light use, I would check the warranty to see if you can get a new battery.
newfmp3 04-07-08, 05:31 PM 2+ years on the same nimh batteries. And i game a LOT because I'm off injured.
Duracel and Energizer are the only ones I'll buy,
Locbert 04-07-08, 05:47 PM Maybe it works. Who has tried.

no dice. 90 day warranty on that POS. Mine died after the 2nd charge, which at the time, getting such light use, was within a month after warranty.

D'oh.
It's frustrating, becuase the play-and-charge is a good idea. My particular unit just didn't hold up too well, I guess.
The way I used it might not have helped -- I don't ever play with the USB cable hooked up, because my 360 is on an equipment rack behind my screen wall. I'd just play wirelessly until the battery discharged, then hook up the USB, shut the console down, and leave it to charge.

That shouldn't have been a problem...you probably just got a dud battery.
I have to say...I got a 36-pack of AAs at BJ's for $9.99, and they seem to last a LOT longer than the rechargable batteries.

Buy new one, return old one with that receipt. Say it doesn't work properly and you want your money back.

Been too long for that.....don't even know if I have the battery pack any more.

and those 36 batteries will last you about what, 6 months tops, and in the process you're killing the environment...
i originally took that route too, and went through 24 Energizers in about 4 months, and i don't even play as much as some other people here. since then, i got the Energizer recharger with 4 AA batteries for $20, and wouldn't change a thing. i have 2 in the controller, and 2 on the side ready to put in the controller when the other ones need charging, and won't cringe at the end of the year when i realized i just threw away 48 batteries to play video games...

Actually, still on the first 2 that I put in my controller--oh, a month or so ago. So at that rate they'll last at least 18 months.
You obviously feel very strongly about your batteries, but I don't really understand why you're attacking me about my choice in controller power.
schticker 04-08-08, 01:10 PM Still rocking the same eight Monter rechargables from 03 that power my Pronto and game controllers.

I never recharge my current controller while playing. In fact, when my ring of light on the controller starts indicating my battery is about to die (and I still get three or four hours more even when it starts blinking), I begin recharging my second controller/battery pack by plugging it into my desktop computer's USB. Then I keep using the current controller until it goes out on me. I don't recharge that one until the second one is about to die. That system has worked great for me so far.
I think you just got a bad one.
danieloneil01 04-08-08, 04:21 PM No, it doesn't.
No, you don't.
The play and charge will recharge any type of rechargable AA's. I used to use the pack that came with the play and charge but it was junk so I bought my own rechargable AA's and used the AA holder that came with the 360 for regular batteries.
But I was wrong about them recharging while playing.
paulsabo 04-08-08, 06:50 PM I have four 360 rechargeable packs, one for each controller, and they've all been subjected to heavy use and a LOT of charges. Probably nearly a year old now, and they all work fine. Charge on each lasts long enough that whenver I do need to charge them, I can't remember the last time I had to...
Guess it's a hit-and-miss problem, or they work substantially better with regular use.
formulanerd 04-09-08, 02:39 AM picked up a charger and 3 packs during the dell coupon fiasco... excellent product, before i was using rechargeables from all-battery.com, which work great, but the packs and charge kit are just more convenient.
as for the play and charge, i have one, but i HATE plugging the damn cable in.
fjtorres 04-09-08, 08:22 AM I'm two-plus years into my plug-n-charge battery.
Starting to hold less of a charge but I still get several evenings gameplay per charge. I don't have any ritual for usage but when the charge light starts to flash I make a note to plug it into the charge cable when I'm done gaming and crawl off to bed. ;-)
I'll probably buy a new battery pack some time before xmas but I'm plenty happy with what I got.

Same experience here. I have 4 black ones and 4 white ones between my 360 and the kids' 360 upstairs all working great and used for quite a while (over a year).
