Version 1.1 Change log:
Added D* channels
Updated Comcast, Mediacom, Cox, TWC
Edit 1: Just read in another thread that Fox News HD launches before 4/30, with TWC and D* having agreements to carry. I will update the document with that change in version 1.2
Do you have the list of 50 just announced by Time-Warner?

sansri88 04-03-08, 09:00 PM Nope. That might warrant me updating my current one....
Cablevision hasn't annouced the addition of MavTV-HD. Cablevision only announces something just before or, or right after, it's added.
rolltide1017 04-06-08, 01:07 PM I have Brighthouse Networks in Orlando, FL and we do not get the following channels: MHD, Starz HD, Cinemax HD and Golf/VS HD (should be changed to limited IMO).
New first post, topic pruned.
dish has had nba tv for a while now
gla17624 04-10-08, 03:51 AM wow, this chart really ticks me off. why the heck do i have to have insight as my only cable tv provider? they have the fewest hd channels on the list!
What's up with FX (Newscorp) and USA/Sci-Fi (NBC Universal) ??? These are "must have" HD channels that nobody (save D*) seems to have. What gives ???
AndyHDTV 04-11-08, 12:30 PM Announced for TWC

gla17624 04-11-08, 12:32 PM insight has tbs HD, NFL HD, and the learning channel HD now. at least they have it in louisville, ky where i'm at.
URFloorMatt 04-11-08, 12:52 PM Can I make a recommendation? We're not distinguishing "Limited Announced" anymore (and neither are the MSOs), and there aren't any Timeshares (and I seriously doubt any would be added anywhere in the future at this point). How about we dump both of those and give Limited Available it's own unique color rather than that gradient. Then it'd be a lot easier to read.
Or don't dump any of them--it doesn't matter to me--but I'd really be happy if you dropped the gradients for individual colors.

individual colors would be much easier to read. i was just thinking the same thing when i first found this thread the other day. thanks for posting this info original poster! i've been looking for this kind of info for a long time!
sansri88 04-11-08, 07:06 PM Hey, thanks for the suggestions and updates. I'll be working hard tonight to figure out what to do with the colors. The original creator built them into a formula or something, so I have to set it up correctly. I'll try my best to get different colors.
AndyHDTV 04-12-08, 01:06 AM I say get rid of the "Limited" color as almost every HD channel added from whichever cable company will have limited availability for the foreseeable future.
Plus If I had (example) CableCast in Vice City and I looked at this list and noticed that CableCast offered ESPN3-HD but I didn't have it. I would come to the conclusion that the channel has "limited availability" on CableCast and that my area has the rights to it but has not yet added it.
just my 2 centz
dontbugme 04-12-08, 11:52 PM Cox has SciFi in limited availability. San Diego has it now.
gla17624 04-13-08, 07:27 PM just double-checked and insight has "animal planet HD" and "Discover HD" as well available everywhere. the channels that i mentioned earlier (NFL HD, TBS HD, and the learning channel HD) are available everywhere as well.
According to their site (http://www.insight-com.com/products-hdtv.asp#), these channels have limited availability (i don't have them here in louisville, though):
A&E HD
Big Ten Network HD
History Channel HD
Science Channel HD
Cinemax HD
Starz HD
PA_MainyYak 04-15-08, 12:57 PM You want lame?
Atlantic Broadband is a top 20 MSO with pockets of service in Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, and Florida (I think they also have a presence in one of the Carolinas).
The HD lineup is not extensive:
TNT HD
NFL Network HD
ESPN HD
Regional Sports (varies by market) HD
Outdoor Channel 2 HD (which does not appear to carry any HD programming anymore )
(Discovery) HD Theater
Starz HD
HBO HD
Cinemax HD
and in Florida only:
HDNet
HDNet Movies

Lifetime HD Rolls Out; AT&T, Verizon To Offer It
Network's Second HD Channel Joins Lifetime Movie Network HD
By Linda Moss, Multichannel News, 4/16/2008
Lifetime Networks has launched its second HDTV service, Lifetime Television HD, joining sister channel Lifetime Movie Network HD, which bowed last year, officials said Wednesday.
Lifetime has also closed carriage deals with AT&T U-verse TV and Verizon FiOS TV to carry the new HDTV service. The two telcos have carried Lifetime Movie Network HD on their video services since 2007.

home_audio 04-21-08, 01:34 PM Who is watching Lifetime HD anyway? 4:3 on an HD channel is still low def. And High def theater shows "How it's made" in a stretch format. Horay for more HD channels, but where's the content? Sub standard HD channels/networks get no love on my system!

URFloorMatt 05-12-08, 12:40 AM I came up with some other recommendations for the thread.
1) Rather than "NEW & IMPROVED EVEN BETTER" just put "Last Updated: 5/11/08" in the thread title.
2) I think it might be more helpful to list the cable providers by marketshare rather than alphabetically by provider type. That way it'll be easier to get a better idea how services with comparative audiences are doing in their acquisition of HD channels.
I came up with some other recommendations for the thread.
1) Rather than "NEW & IMPROVED EVEN BETTER" just put "Last Updated: 5/11/08" in the thread title.
Why would it say that when it was last updated on April 6th ??
Better would be to simply state:
Only Updated When DirecTV Adds Channels - Because in the 21st Century, TV is all about BIAS
URFloorMatt 05-12-08, 03:29 AM Why would it say that when it was last updated on April 6th ??
I was just giving an example, the point being that the last date of update should appear in the thread title rather than the vague and uninformative "NEW AND BETTER AND IMPROVED AND STUFF OMG LOOK!"

Too bad that that chart is horribly inaccurate. DirecTV carries My Network TV and CW in HD in NYC and has since February. FiOS doesn't have the NHL network in SD nevermind HD.
It's also misleading because they leave out all of the RSNs that are available via FiOS but only in the local markets. You can get the HD RSNs via satellite but you'll need the sports packages to get the pro sports.
Not CNET's best effort for sure.

URFloorMatt 07-01-08, 08:53 PM I was bored. If anyone knows how to use Excel formulas, I'd much appreciate the advice. Counting them by hand seems overly time consuming.
I've incorporated all the new info from this thread, though I'd recommend leaving nataraj's post for a bit just in case I've made mistakes. I've reorganized the cable providers so that they appear in descending order by subscriber base rather than alphabetically.
I'm sure there are mistakes and many things missing, so lay them on me and I'll fix them.

Use the countif function... countif(range,criteria)
you would have to put something in the cell, maybe
"W" Widely Available
"L" Limited Avalability
"A" Announced
then you could use conditional formatting to color code the cell, and text, if you don't want that to show. It is limited to 3 conditions so maybe use gray for the N/A.
If you want, I could create it for you, just send me the XL file... I have office 2003.
This looks great!
Thanks for doing this.

Cablevision Ramps Up HD Lineup
Operator Will Push Roster To 60 By Adding 15 Channels By Aug. 1
By R. Thomas Umstead -- Multichannel News, 7/2/2008 9:37:00 AM
Cablevision Systems Corp. will add high-definition services from Nickelodeon, Discovery Channel and FX as part of an overall 15-network HD rollout Aug. 1 that will increase its free enhanced lineup to 60 channels.
The new additions will launch over a five-day period starting July 28 and will be available to Cablevision’s more than 1.1 million high definition-enabled subscribers by Aug. 1.
While the network would not dislcose all 15 HD channel additions, the MSO said it will add HD offerings from Nickelodeon, WE tv, AMC, Animal Planet, The Weather Channel, Travel Channel, Fox News Channel, Discovery Channel, Hallmark Movie Channel and FX.
The 60-channel lineup still includes the Cablevision’s Rainbow Media-owned Voom HD suite of channels. Cablevision’s carriage deal with Voom was set to expire June 30, according to published reports.
Cablevision officials said it does not comment on contract negotiations with program providers.

As with the cable companies, the Verizon lineup varies widely from market to market.

Suddenlink adds more HDTV channels
Written by Staff Reports
Saturday, 28 June 2008
Suddenlink’s recently completed 957-mile West Texas fiber ring is helping bring more high-definition television (HDTV) programming to area communities. Suddenlink today announced it has added four more HD channels in its West Texas markets: FX HD, USA HD, Sci Fi HD, and Travel Channel HD.
Suddenlink also announced it has added Chiller to its digital Variety Tier.
Last month, upon announcing completion of the fiber ring, the company announced it had added three other HD channels: TBS HD, MHD, and History Channel HD. The latest HD channel additions have been launched in Suddenlink cable systems in the Texas markets of Abilene, Amarillo, Andrews, Big Spring, Floydada, Lubbock, Midland, Plainview, San Angelo, Snyder and Sweetwater - as well as Clovis, N.M.
The newly added HD channels, along with existing HD channels and HD programming that will be available via Suddenlink video on demand services coming later this year, will offer hundreds of hours of HD programming, a volume expected to match or surpass competitive offerings.
HDTV offers a widescreen format, similar to a movie theater, with distinctly sharper and clearer images than standard TV. It also provides better sound quality. Not all networks or stations offer HD programming.
All of the most recent channel adds - USA HD, FX HD, Travel Channel HD and Sci Fi HD - are featured on Suddenlink’s “HD Basic” tier of service, which is available free to customers who lease the equipment required to enable HD viewing. (Suddenlink customers must have an HD television set connected to a Suddenlink HD receiver, or another HD receiver with a Suddenlink cable card, in order to view “HD Basic” channels.)
For more information, area residents may call Suddenlink toll-free at 1-866-269-4386, visit local Suddenlink offices, or visit Suddenlink’s Web site www.Suddenlink.com and enter their zip code for updated channel lineups and other information.
Suddenlink Adds HDTV Channels
The Times-Standard
Article Launched: 07/03/2008 01:15:48 AM PDT
Suddenlink this week announced it will add seven high-definition channels to its existing HD lineup in the Eureka area, effective July 16.
FOX 29 KBVU in HD will be available via Suddenlink as an “HD Broadcast” channel, which can be viewed without a Suddenlink HD receiver or cable card if customers have HD televisions sets with a built-in QAM tuner.
TBS HD, USA HD, FX HD, Travel HD and Sci-Fi HD will be added to Suddenlink's “HD Basic” tier of service, which already includes ESPN HD, ESPN HD2 and TNT HD.
History HD will be added to the “HD Plus” Tier that includes HD Theater, HD Net, HD Net Movies, Universal HD, HGTV HD, Food HD, A&E HD, and National Geographic HD. Two non-HD channels -- We TV and Chiller -- will also be added to Suddenlink's Digital Variety Tier.
No news about them in my market, Charleston, WV, as of yet, but we were one of the first to get new HD channels last time.
As far as I can tell no single market on Suddenlink actually has every HD channel they offer (locals and RSN's don't count), the ones that have the most have usually been missing either Cinemax HD or Universal HD.
These 4 additions bring Suddenlink's HD count to 22, which is apparently 7th among cable operators and Suddenlink is 7th in subscribers as well.
URFloorMatt 07-04-08, 10:32 PM As with the cable companies, the Verizon lineup varies widely from market to market.
Generally speaking, it does not. Verizon's objective is a nationally uniform product. While the VHOs are upgraded to increase QAM capacity, certain markets will come online with the new channels faster than others, but everyone apparently should have them by the fall.
I'm not sure what he was talking about, unless he was referring to the initial post rather than my updated post.
Update with the totals added to follow tomorrow.
tamahome02000 07-04-08, 10:43 PM My Comcast only has 23 of those channels, unless you count 'INH2+', which seems mostly SD anyway.

sdk 009 07-11-08, 12:19 PM Can somebody please tell me how Comcast gets away with their radio ads that claims they "have more HD programming than anybody...period." Even if they count OnDemand programming, they still fall way short of almost all the other cable and satellite providers.
No need to list Versus on its own at the bottom as "announced".
The current Versus/Golf HD combo will become VersusHD 24/7 - new deals will have to be announced for GolfHD.

The ads only apply to your area - so other cable companies don't matter - its only vs their competitors (satellite and possibly FiOS/Uverse - i don't know whats in your area). If Dish/DirecTV are your only other options - then they probably can make that claim, thanks to OnDemand.....

They include each OnDemand program as a "choice" so that is how they inflate the pathetic number of 30ish HD channels to over 500. However there have been a couple articles this week on MultiChannel that say that Comcat is finally realizing that this strategy doesn't work and that people are still jumping ship to other providers(DUH). Finally they are realizing that a bunch of programs on a clunky interface that doesn't always work, does not equal hitting one button on your remote to go up to the next HD channel.
Most say they will start to not focus on that as much and put their efforts on eliminating analog channels to make room for more HD. Time Warner seems to be doing more SDV, and not removing as many analog channels.
Perch33 07-12-08, 07:43 PM I always knew Insight sucked, this only reinforces their hold on it. One of the providers with the fewest available HD channels and looks like nothing in the works.

Insight sucks with 30 HD channels? How about Comcast here (S. Jersey) with only 25?!
allargon 07-12-08, 10:20 PM URFloorMatt, thanks for providing a more up to date list. However, Dish has had HGTV for a looong time. It also currently has MHD HD, Starz HD, Versus/Golf HD, 5Max HD and MoreMax HD,
URFloorMatt 07-12-08, 10:21 PM Insight has 15, Max.
According to the HBO and Cinemax websites, all of their networks are now available in HD, even if no one is carrying them yet. Given recent additions by AT&T and many errors in the Dish lineup, I thought an update was worthwhile. My prior post now reflects all suggestions and corrections up to this post, and all posts up through this one can be purged.
You may need to refresh to get the most recent version.
dishrich 07-14-08, 04:41 PM Nice UR, but one tiny thing - you have MoreMax listed twice (you still have it listed by itself in the M's)

Confirmed here in Flower Mound, TX, too. I just came back from a trip out-of-state to my parents and their DTV was loaded with HD channels and it's really bugging me now that Verizon is dragging their feet on rolling out the additional channels. When is Texas slated to get new channels?
chitchatjf 07-20-08, 09:45 PM Versus/Golf NOT available on Comcast?
Marty Milton 07-24-08, 10:37 AM Versus/Golf NOT available on Comcast?
It is available on our Comcast system here in Champaign-Urbana, IL so I assume it should be colored in as limited availability.
URFloorMatt, for Cablevision, Big Ten HD and MavTv HD are NOT announced HD channels. That would bring the correct number of announced HD channels to 15.
URFloorMatt 07-24-08, 04:31 PM Versus/Golf NOT available on Comcast?
Versus/Golf is listed as widely available on Comcast on the prior spreadsheet. That was an error that will be corrected in the next update.
The next update will likely come after August 1, when Dish is confirmed to add many new channels and, if speculation is correct, DirecTV and Verizon will both be adding dozens of new channels as well.
