sorry i know there are already a million topics related to espnnews, but i had a question about there news highlights.
why is it that some of there highlights are shown in SD, when the game was broadcast in HD? for example today the braves And mets on sports south was broadcast in HD on D* ,but when watching the highlights on espnnews HD later they were using the SD video from sports south.
i noticed this with a few other baseball highlight during the MLB lp free preview week. does D* have more HD access than espn or something?
thanks for your input
Same reason CBS doesn't show HD highlights of their own NFL games during halftime - they're too cheap and lazy.

It could be that for whatever reason ESPN could not access the HD feed of a game or they don't have the rights to use the video from the HD feed so they use the SD feed instead.
The only other thing I can think of is, some nights there are just so many games being played they record some in SD.

ESPN does a far better job showing HD highlights of games than CBS with NFL and NCAA highlights all in SD.

The answer has little do with being cheap or lazy. ESPN routinely spends more money on their facilities and resources than any of their competitors. The issue is as correctly stated earlier, rightsholder issues (broadcasters may prohibit ESPN from accessing their HD feed or demand a rights premium -- which ESPN is likely not going to concede to a regional sports network or local affiliate) or they simply do not have the number of ingest ports to take in HD feeds (though this issue will be resolved soon enough.)

Short-sighted and Ignorant.
Nice Job.
If you don't know... don't answer with stupidity....
This time of year - there are just too many sporting events going on simultaneously... and the # being covered in HD has grown tremendously over last year.... (Yesterday was very very very loaded.) ESPN just can't 'record' all of them in HD at the same time (yet, as the insider has indicated)... they have to prioritize.... (rights can come into play as well.. but that probably wasn't the case in this particular instance)

But this particular problem will manifest itself more with MLB coverage which is generally more regionalized than most other professional sports and ESPN is the primary rightsholder for the NBA which is also somewhat regionalized, but it is of less consequence because you also rarely have two crews covering an NBA event (if ever), as is common in Major League Baseball.
Also ESPN and ESPNEWS share a infrastructure so whatever highlight feed is used on Sportscenter should generally be the same feed found on ESPNEWS (unless there is some sort of rights issue that specifies otherwise, which crops up from time to time).

Most NBA games have two feeds, home and visitor. Only the ABC games and most TNT games, and select other games where only one team is broadcasting a game would there be only one broadcast going on.

How come then YES Network can show HD highlights from SNY HD, FSN North HD or FSN Detroit HD? I have never seen HD highlights from those channels in HD on ESPN. You mean to tell me that YES which is RSN, has the rights to HD highlights but they do not give them to ESPN. I just think some people at ESPN do not care about getting HD highlights.
