I have a good OTA antenna that I know works well.

I want to replace my (expensive) Comcast DVR-type service with OTA HD broadcasts. Just having the locals in HD for tings like LOST and the Superbowl is really all we need in our life right now and we might as well save the ~$50/month on cable...

Right now I feed the Comcast Motorola DVR into a Monoproce 4 X matrix HDMI splitter. Single HDMI goes out to a Marantz 4001VP 720 PJ. Picture is great.

So... I'm assuming I need some sort of device (Rx) to take the Antenna signal and pump it out to an HDMI line to feed the splitter-->PJ.

OR... maybe a tuner card on a PC will work? Do I pump the antenna signal into the tuner card. First choice is option 1 (Rx), but I could possibly try a HTPC option...

Please help with antenna to HDMI recommended equipment if there is such a thing...

You could also consider the Tivo HD if you want DVR functionality

Is there a less expensive device that does the same thing for OTA HD signals?  The ATSC tuner on my HD television (which I bought without OTA in mind -- and at the time, not knowing OTA HD existed -- so I can't really claim to be dissatisfied with it) is pretty lousy, rarely pulls in much, and gets no station consistently, while a CECB on the same antenna locks on every digital station in the area (but being a CECB it downconverts HD to SD).  So I suspect that the problem is my television's ATSC tuner, rather than the antenna or the signal.

Do you need to record, or you're just looking for live TV?

If you want to record, you might want to research the Sony DHG-HDD250/500 or the LG 3410A. These are both single tuner DVRs. Both also work with QAM (on cable). They are also both discontinued and have older generation ATSC tuner chips, so they might not tune as well as you'd like.

The TivoHD is another option, but you have to deal with a monthly fee (or pay for lifetime).

A HTPC or Mac is another option, but you're looking at $1,000 minimum (or so) for more flexibility. If you already have a decent PC/Mac, then you just need the tuner card/USB stick. They run about $200 or so, depending on features. Look at the HDHomeRun or the Hauppauge devices. El Gato on the Mac side.

Lastly, you could wait for the Echostar TR-50. Lots of speculation and anticipation on this device. It's supposed to be a fee-free OTA-DVR (dual tuner) with TVGOS service. I haven't seen any official word on pricing or availability.

If you just want an ATSC tuner, the Sammy 260 is the one that gets recommended time after time.
