View Full Version : My HDTV only supports 1080i, worth it to get a terrestrial HDTV tuner? Absolutely!
New to the forum but I don't think this question has been asked.
My 52" Mitsu only supports 480i, 480p, and 1080i. I've noticed that some of the local broadcast channels (Las Vegas) broadcast in 1080i, but some only broadcast in 720p...like Fox.
Fox is the channel I care most about, am I out of luck?
I would imagine a tuner that would receive the signal and convert to 1080i would work just fine on my tv, but does such a thing exist? Any comments?
BTW I have a rooftop antenna currently only being used to receive analog stations, I'm waiting for my $40 coupons to arrive before toying with DTV. The TV does not have an ATSC tuner.
dingo99 04-07-08, 03:37 AM Just about any HD ATSC tuner will do the conversion to 1080i just fine. There will be a switch on the back or in the menus to set your desired output resolution.
Why wait for the $40 coupon? It doesn't apply to HD tuners. With a coupon-eligible box, at best you'd be running your HDTV at 480i on S-video.
Scooper 04-07-08, 08:13 AM Take a look at the Samsung DTB-H260F - does EXACTLY what you're asking for . It works best on HDTV 16:9 displays.

Very, very few HDTV's display both 720p & 1080i natively. Either the set, or the source box (OTA, Cable, DBS), side-convert the signal to the format the set will display. It works great.
As noted, forget about the coupon boxes. Get a DTV (ATSC) tuner with HD output.

Did someone post a link to the AVS Forum on Yahoo or Google? (Or worse yet, a CableCo web site.) There seems to be a dramatic up-tick in the number of new posters that treat the forum as another "Yahoo Answers"-type forum.
Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with new members asking questions. It's just that these new posters are treating the forum as as answering service first, rather than a resource for finding the information for themselves.
Unfortunately, sometimes the answers are as ill-informed as the questions, and the neophyte might not be able to reason this out for themselves. (Shame on the answerer, not the questioner!)

Thanks for the replies, guys. I'm glad the Samsung will do what I need, but a little disappointed that it won't be eligible for a credit with the coupon.
I'm still new to the scene, so I think my problem was finding the right search terms.
What brought me to the site is ReplayTV, I recently bought a lifetime unit and this site and Planet Replay seem to be the two best sites for info.

It still might not completely stop the above, but at least it might keep some of them out of our hair here, and give them a more specifically titled place to go to.
If there was a separate forum for the CECB, I don't think I would have posted there.
My question was geared more towards whether or not a HDTV terrestrial tuner would convert signal to work on my TV, not so much a question of eligibility or compatibility with the CECB program. Maybe I should have left that sentence out.

Excellent idea! ;) http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=970152

Why is it not good for 4:3 tv's? Is there no zoom feature or something?
It only outputs OSD's via component and HDMI outputs. Most 4x3 TV'd lack those inputs. It does have zoom features though.

It was suggested, and yet to be decided.
Actually, a lot of late model 4:3 TVs have component inputs. Sony is one example.
I have a Phillips 27" I bought at least 5 years ago that has component inputs for 480P
That's why I said "most".
I also have a Sony Wega 4:3 with components, but I think the majority of 4:3 TV's don't. It sure works nice to have components with the Sammy though. Mine only supports 480i though.
