I have just learned that Cox Cable offers HDTV through standard cable. Their website makes it look as if you need to get digital cable to receive it but that is just not so. This makes me very happy indeed as I never cared to pay for digital television. Anyway I'm now in the market for an HD tuner and at this point I know next to nothing about what I'm looking for.

I'll be watching it on an Optoma HD73 projector if that makes any difference. As i mentioned I have Cox Cable and I know they offer their own tuners but I really don't know how good they are plus I don't want to have to sign up for any additional services. A DVR would be nice but it's not necessary.

I'd appreciate any and all suggestions, thanks.

As far as I know, the only widely-available standalone HD tuner is the Samsung DTB-H260F (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=728392). You can find it at many Best Buy and Circuit City stores. If you want a DVR you can get a Tivo HD, but I think you have to rent a CableCard from your cable company in order to use it with cable.

For other discontinued units which you can find on eBay or elsewhere, see the Official AVS HDTV STB synopsis (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=179095), which is a sticky thread at the top of this very forum. You need to focus on units that have QAM (digital cable) support.
