View Full Version : Hauppauge HD PVR on sale?
gov_coder 04-08-08, 09:48 AM I noticed the Hauppauge HD pvr page on hauppauge's website has a buy it (http://www.hauppauge.com/site/products/hd_pvr.html)button.
And I though it was delayed. Anyone out there going to get one soon?
I'm tempted.
Troubleshooter 04-08-08, 11:41 AM I had last heard that it was pushed out until May. I'll certainly look into getting one when there's Linux support for it.

gov_coder 04-08-08, 01:12 PM I was initially thinking of picking one up at circuit city or some such other big-box outlet once they were in stores. But now I'm wondering if this product will be overwhelmed by demand.
If it does get 'Wii'd' - ordering early may be the smart thing to do.
lsdavinci 04-09-08, 09:04 AM I hate when I do this... I just ordered it. and the part that frustrates me the most, 2 of the 3 applications that are bundled with it, I just bought last week. Damn! Oh well. Once I get the item, I'll see what it can do. I would love to get some stuff off my DVR and onto my HTPC...
gov_coder 04-09-08, 11:15 AM Didja get an expected shipping date?
MichaelLAX 04-15-08, 12:24 PM I ordered one yesterday; other than an email acknowledging the order, no other shipping information received...
lsdavinci 04-15-08, 12:27 PM Nope, no ship date here either. This just might be a pre-order even thought they didn't state it on the page nor in the email. I hope I get something this month at least...
newlinux 04-15-08, 01:34 PM Pardon my ignorance, does anyone have details about how this device works with Linux and mythtv? Is there any planned support? This would allow me to ditch comcast and go back to satellite and still get HD (keep basic cable for the QAM tuning only, but satellite offers much more HD) without be confined to the satellite dvrs...
I remember some older articles talking about planned Linux support - but that's all I know...

From my understanding, GBPVR (for WIN) already has support for this gadget. MythTV could be quite soon if drivers are available but I'm in "wait and see" mode as well.

I wonder if the device will show up as a USB mass storage device in Linux. If it had a web interface for setting up recordings... I would buy it before dvr support was ready cause I could keep this schedule up myself and then transfer recordings to mythvideo...
lsdavinci 05-14-08, 12:02 PM I just got this email:

If it does get 'Wii'd' - ordering early may be the smart thing to do.These cards (Hauppauge PVRs) have never been sold in "big-box" stores, due to limited demand and pricing. At least as far as I know. Most people will just get the HD-DVR that is provided by their TV service provider (with a simple set-up).

I think the main utility of the hauppage PVR is to work in conjunction with the HD-DVR from satellite and cable companies to allow users to record any content off the box in HD free of any DRM restriction. Right now for cable STB you can only do that on non 5c protected channels via firewire and you can't do it at all with satellite STB (hacking the STBs aside).

Yes, and in my case I will order a dedicated HD receiver from DirecTV without the DVR included. Given the way that their DVR works, you cannot be sure that the output will be the channel (of two) that they are constantly recording, since they have two tuners. A dedicated receiver will always be outputing the real-time source and the HD-PVR's IR blaster should take care of switching the channels as needed.

The Hauppauge USB2 PVR analog cable NTSC recorder with hardware MPEG2 encoder was/is sold at Circuit City and others, so there may be hope for the HD PVR at CC or Sears perhaps.

Radio Shack has been a Hauppauge supporter also. I would guess they might carry the HD PVR, too. I have seen their products at local RS stores.

CT_Wiebe 05-18-08, 12:02 AM I stand corrected. Thank you.
MichaelLAX -- It doesn't matter. The only DVR recordings that are saved are the ones you tell it to save. The DirecTV DVRs always have a buffer area recording on the HDD (and only use the #1 tuner, unless you tell it otherwise, AFIK). Also, I use an eSATA external 1TB HDD for doing my recording, so I'm not that limited on recording area (see http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=92029 for more information). When I tell it to save an OTA channel, it uses tuner #2 for that, since it doesn't change channels when I have that programmed.
MichaelLAX 05-18-08, 12:37 AM I'm not sure what your point is...
The DirecTV DVR is not reliable when it comes to being used as a source for the Hauppauge HD-DVR, as you cannot be sure which of the two tuners is going to the output for unattended use. Hence I will get a dedicated HD DirecTV receiver to use with the HD-PVR and its IR blaster.
Additional eSATA storage is great! But only for that one DVR. I have 3 HR21-xxx's and when we want to relax in the TV room with company and watch a show that is on the bedroom DVR, we're out of luck! These are not networkable like the TiVO HD stand-alone unit is...
However, my AppleTVs are networked. So once I obtain the output from the Hauppauge on my 1.5T network drive, I can watch it from any room I desire. Works for me!
