Disney and Pixar go exclusively 3D

Foul play ... The success of the 3D version of Chicken Little helped turn cinema chains onto the concept

Disney and Pixar have announced a plan to release all forthcoming films in digital-3D, further underscoring the current revolution in cinema technology.

Disney - which owns Pixar, the renowned studio behind Ratatouille and The Incredibles - has been at the forefront of the emerging next generation of 3D films. The success of its 2005 feature Chicken Little on 3D screens was flagged as a flashpoint which led to the greenlighting of a plan to install new technology in thousands of cinemas, both here and in the US, over the next couple of years.

DreamWorks Animation, creator of the Shrek series, announced last summer it was going exclusively 3-D, starting with the film DWA in 2009. Disney will kick off with Bolt, the story of a German Shepherd who has lived his whole life on the set of his action TV show, where he believes he has superpowers. It will feature a voice cast including John Travolta and Miley Cyrus, and debuts in November in the US, with a UK release following in February 2009.

Disney's announcement came as it revealed its full roster of animated features for the next four years, including six new films from Pixar. Top of the list were Toy Story 3, a sequel to the hit tale starring Tom Hanks, which will hit cinemas in June 2010, and Cars II, featuring Ratatouille's Brad Bird as director, which will be released in summer 2012.

Pixar will also release Newt, about the last two remaining male and female blue-footed newts on the planet, in 2011, with seven-time Oscar winner Gary Rydstrom making his directing debut. The Bear and the Bow, featuring the voices of Reese Witherspoon, Billy Connolly and Emma Thompson, is slated for Christmas 2011.

Could you downsize that picture please? I had to keep moving the screen back and forth to read your text. BTW, will they ever release 3-D in BR?

2k D-Cinema is not an improvement in image quality (resolution, contrast ratio or color-space). It simply does not come close to equaling film. Sorry, but we'll be seeing lesser image quality, not better.

No scratches, sure (Film does not have to be scratched. That's bad presentation). Steadier, sure. But no TV camera (or TV projector) has the wide overall range of film for capturing images.

Mitch everything is possible with Blue Ray evolving into new features.

I am happy with the Dolby system for theaters and those BADC Bel Air Digital Circuit homes I get to support.

I am for one grateful to be involved with the BADC from the groundfloor.

DCI content is 8-10 times denser than a typical BR. I can't understand why you would dismiss it Ron?
