Tonights starts the 2008 NHL Playoff season with a doubleheader on Tap:
Game 1: Ottawa at Pittsburg 7:00 pm ET
Game 2: Calgary at San Jose 10:00 pm ET
Looking forward to a lot of great Hockey, some real good match-ups for a first round!
I just got VsHD today... so I'm pumped! (getting 3 games in HD tonight... these 2 along with the one I really care about... Rangers/Devils... with TWO HD channels to choose from :) MSG and MSG+)
LET'S GO RANGERS ! ! !!! :D
big angry 04-09-08, 01:25 PM My Canes didn't get in (damn shootouts) but I will try and force my embittered self to catch a few games.
I can't really bring myself to actually root for anybody though. Maybe Nashville, they seem like a plucky bunch. :)
diy_canuck 04-09-08, 02:22 PM TWC in Syracuse decided to give us VS/Golf in HD this week but not regular VS which really sucks. I thought it would have been perfect timing.
Anywho... I look forward to Sens/Pens rematch from last year's first round.
Knicks_Fan 04-09-08, 02:49 PM My Canes didn't get in (damn shootouts)
The d**n Caps were too hot in the stretch. Yes, I know where I live (in the heart of Caps land). I would not want to play them right now.
Equally embittered. The only Cane we will see on TV in the near future is Bret Hedican cheering his wife Kristi on Dancing With The Stars (saw him Monday).
VS gets exclusive rights in the 2nd or 3rd round?
pappy97 04-09-08, 03:18 PM VS gets exclusive rights in the 2nd or 3rd round?
In the US, VS does not have exclusive rights in round 2. But they will for Conference Finals and Cup Games not on NBC.
FriscoJoe 04-09-08, 03:20 PM No games for NHL Network? I guess I shouldn't be surprised.
Is the second game tonight a re-broadcast of TSN, CBC or SportsNet?

Yeah, the Caps were hot.
But regardless, it seems to me there's a big problem when a team is sitting at home for the playoffs when they had more wins than 4 of the conference teams that actually got IN.
I hate the shootout. Always have. It's just not a natural part of the game. It's like ending a tied basketball game with a dunk contest, or an extra-innings baseball game with a home run derby.

Still, the rules are what they are and every team knows what they are when the season starts. Part of building a team is having guys who can succeed in shootouts, because like it or not they are part of the current NHL game.
Go PENS!!
VS gets exclusive rights in the 2nd or 3rd round?
In the USA
Versus has no exclusive games in the 1st round.
In the 2nd round they get to choose two games in each series to air exclusively.
The conference finals are exclusive to Versus as are the first 2 games of the SCF.
http://www.versus.com/nw/article/view/64417/?tf=OLNPressCenter_articles.tpl&UserDef=true
NBC games are always exclusive.
No games for NHL Network? I guess I shouldn't be surprised.
I would expect the NHL doesn't want their network to compete with a paying customer (Versus).
Why is golf listed for tomorrow night? Is that really better than HD playoff hockey? Are my DVR listings wrong?
acs12798 04-09-08, 05:10 PM Why is golf listed for tomorrow night? Is that really better than HD playoff hockey? Are my DVR listings wrong?
Well they are doing stuff from the masters, but its not match coverage. I think its just that the time sharing arrangement between the channels in not changeable(event though there owned by the same company).
Why is golf listed for tomorrow night? Is that really better than HD playoff hockey? Are my DVR listings wrong?
The Golf Channel normally controls Thursday and Friday prime time on VSGLF. However, they have shown golf in HD at times that were normally listed as Versus events. So it is possible that the guide is wrong. It would be stupid for them to show Live from the Masters in SD instead of a HD hockey game, but you never know. Mojo has been used by Versus in the past on Thursday and Fridays but they have nothing listed as of yet. We'll find out for sure on Thursday night.
According to the Versus website, the games will not be on in HD. What a joke!
Versus marketing for HD playoff games last year was an insult.
All playoff games will be in HD!*
*Except the stuff we re-broadcast from Canada. And anything on Thursday or Friday, since we prefer to waste bandwidth with upconverted golf.
Brad Smith 04-09-08, 05:55 PM There is a big plus on the stuff rebroadcast from Canada... getting the CBC broadcast!
AtogMuncher 04-09-08, 05:57 PM Anyone know if there are regional blackouts on VS? I live in southern Minnesota and see that VS is showing 3 of the first 4 Wild games against the Aves and I am hoping they don't black them out because channel 45 (Twin Cities) has exclusive rights (and the channel is not available here).

I believe blackouts are in effect
machpost 04-09-08, 06:27 PM LET'S GO CAPS!!!
Of course they always seem to choke in the playoffs, but this year I have my fingers crossed :D

Yeah, we have some of those guys but it seems like they're always hurt....which was another problem this season.
In any event I've always hated the shootout.....it just so happens it had a horrible negative impact on my team this year so now I have even more reason to hate it. :)
alexandriahokie 04-09-08, 07:09 PM Is anyone else having issues with VS HD? Here on Comcast in Arlington/Alexandria, the screen has been black since last night. I just called Comcast and they sent a signal to the box (yeah, like that was the issue) and it's still not working.
Horrible break-ups in NY on CV. It is unwatchable.
GregAnnapolis 04-09-08, 07:51 PM So far, so good on Comcast in Annapolis MD. I love this time of year.
alexandriahokie 04-09-08, 07:57 PM Still out in Alexandria, but at least I found out it is also out at the Manassas office, so they are contacting engineering. Let's hope it comes on tonight...or at least tomorrow. Watching in no-def is horrible.
It's out here in N. VA as well.
HiJeffinition 04-09-08, 08:00 PM Horrible break-ups in NY on CV. It is unwatchable.
Yep. And when the picture doesn't stutter and freeze, it looks horrible. Meanwhile, MSG looks like you're watching the Rangers/Devils game through a window. F***ing Dolanvision is at it again.
cash banquet 04-09-08, 08:39 PM watching the pens/sens game here in golden, co and the hd feed is fantastic.

Read post #12 and the link.
Swisher33 04-09-08, 09:53 PM Horrible break-ups in NY on CV. It is unwatchable.
I also have CV and MSG had terrible break-ups until the 2nd period and VersusHD was having problems up until the 3rd. Really pissed me off considering there was not one game on Versus all regular season long that had technical issues until tonight. Great timing.
Anyway, glad the Rangers won tonight, it was a great game, should be an awesome series. Tommorrow night, my Canadiens kick off the series with the Bruins. I'm so used to the Rangers and Canadiens being mediocre almost every year and now they're both strong contenders for the Cup. So, this is like a dream season for me lol. Go Habs! Go Rangers!
CBC HD on VS! Huge surprise!
Cal1981 04-09-08, 10:14 PM Watching the Sharks-Flames game now. The picture is a bit on the dark side for some reason. Normally the image from the Shark Tank is brighter. Also seeing some glitches and some artifacts when a Calgary player high fived the bench after scoring.
PQ was just good tonight, kind of soft. I've seen better from VS. Watching via Comcast-Boston.
That was a cheap hit by Roberts at the end and then what was he thinking by challenging the whole team as he stood by the runway. He is going to need eyes on the back of his head now and probably the rest of the series. Not a very smart move on his behalf.
coyoteaz 04-09-08, 10:22 PM All sorts of audio problems on the Calgary-San Jose game on Versus HD on Cox in Phoenix. Started out with almost everything in the left channel (someone set the mapping from 5.1->2.0 wrong?) and since then there have been numerous dropouts and skips, and the "center channel" just dropped out for a few seconds. PQ is pretty good, though a bit dark (which seems to be common in the Shark Tank).
The CBC feed does seem a little dark, but it is more detailed than the first game. Did notice some minor break ups though.

The Sens play like they're ready to pack up and go home for the summer. I doubt Roberts is in any trouble from this bunch.

Yes I agree with your first part, but what Roberts did might accomplish the opposite. When I team is down you should not give them anything to use as motivation. I think you will see a lot more fired up Sens team in the next game if history is any type of indicator. Thats why I thought it was a dumb move on his part.
Cal1981 04-10-08, 10:08 AM At some point the local Comcast Sports HD station switched over to the Sharks-Flames game and there was a marked difference in the overall brightness level of the picture, more typical of the normal broadcasts from the Tank. Makes you wonder about the Canadian "Hockey Night" video feed that VS was using. The game was pretty much "playoff hockey" but Calgary clearly wanted it more last night. The Sharkies better wake up tonight or that great late season run of theirs won't mean squat.

Eh, it was just one of those awkward plays by the boards. I don't think it was malicious, Roberts plays tough not dirty. I am Pens fans though.
That bit at the end though proved Gary Roberts is a little bit psycho...I think they lock him in a cage and throw him raw meat in between games. Hell of a game from a 41 year old guy playing his 2nd game back from a broken leg/high ankle sprain.

Sorry, with 11 seconds left and your team up 4-0, I will still go back to the dumb word again. I watch a lot of hockey and that was a flagrant hit from behind in my book so I do agree your Pens bias might be blinding you a bit.
hondo21 04-10-08, 10:50 AM Yeah, as a Pens fan, I was pleased with what GR brought to the game last night, but I winced at that last play of his. No need to give them any spark at that point. I thought the previous fight where Whitney took down Redden in retaliation for his liberties with Crosby set enough of a tone going to Game 2. Pens need to not take quite so many penalties. Eventually those 5-on-3s could bite them. Good start.

That's fine, I might have my black and gold glasses on. But I've been watching and playing hockey for almost 20 years myself and can tell you that those plays happen all the time, and the only one who knows the intent is Roberts. I don't have a problem with the 11 seconds left up 4-0. I like that they played to the horn.
The Senators completely embarrassed the Pens last year, there's definitely a payback factor at work.
I think Roberts going nuts at the end fires up the Pens as much as any perceived cheap shot may motivate the Senators.

Again, 11 secs left, leading 4-0, I think makes the intent obvious!
big angry 04-10-08, 12:15 PM It's the playoffs. It's supposed to be dirty.
Maybe I'm biased, because I was a fan of Gary going back to his days in Carolina, but I don't have a big problem with the hit or the little show after. Maybe if my team had a guy or two like him around they'd be wouldn't be sitting at home on their couches.

Yes and I'm sure the Sens will thank him because that team was flat as a pancake for that game last night!
They might not be for the second game! We shall see.
diy_canuck 04-10-08, 01:02 PM I can't see the Sens getting past the Pens without Alfredsson and Fisher. They were sooo flat lastnight. No fire, no energy; they almost seemed disinterested (until the last 11 secs). It looks like they are looking forward to golf season. Absolutely pathetic.
I think I will have to side with Lodef in that what Roberts did was just dumb. I still think the Pens are the better team (against the Sens w/o Alfy and Fisher) but why give them something to 'rally' around?
And for the record, I may be biased in that I hate Roberts. Mostly from his days as a Leaf, because I hate them even more. :p
You know what they always say... "A hot goalie can win a series for you." And based on what I saw lastnight, Kiprusoff looks like he can be that goalie. He played terrific. Calgary is outshot 39-23 and you win? That is all goaltending!! Way to go Kipper!
It was very intereseting to see all the road teams (except Ottawa) win lastnight.

As we discuss the implications of Roberts' questionable decision making skills, the Senators are making tee times for this coming Thursday. ;)
By the way, the broadcast on FSN Pittsburgh looked great last night. I'd like so see them bump up the audio to 5.1 though.

At least you have Versus In HD. Verizon FiOS sucks here in Boston. Comcast has the VS in HD but not FiOS.....
big angry 04-10-08, 02:21 PM They might not be for the second game! We shall see.
We'll see. I doubt it, because that team seems completely dysfunctional, but you're right about one thing: if they respond well everyone will know why.
snowcat 04-10-08, 02:42 PM I am pretty disappointed in the lack of HD for the Preds-Red Wings series starting tonight. :(
It looks like games 2 and 6 on NBC will be the only ones in HD. Games 1, 3, 5, and 7 will be on FSN South in the Nashville area, all in SD. Game 4 will be on SportsSouth in SD (FSN South is showing a Braves game), but since Comcast in Nashville doesn't have SportsSouth (another issue altogether), it will be on a local access channel (49).
I have Dish (partly because Comcast doesn't have SportSouth), but I can't understand why FSN South/SportSouth isn't showing any of the games in HD. They have shown HD Predators games this year and last year, so why not for the playoffs?
Since Versus and FSN-D are doing at least game one of this series in HD, why is FSN South left out? Do they all have different cameras?
Gary Murrell 04-10-08, 02:54 PM UPS is delivering my dual 722's today and I just realized that Golf takes over on thursday/friday so no Wings!! WTF? I can understand live coverage vs NHL because no doubt the later would lose in ratings but from what I understand it is highlights
the series is on sports net Detroit which Dish carries in HD but of course it won't be lit up :(

the Senaturds problem is that they have no guts, that and Alfie getting rocked :D

Will the Flyers game be blacked out in Phily on Friday April 11th on D*?
Yes, during the first round Versus is blackedout in local markets in favor of local broadcasters.
Gary Murrell 04-10-08, 03:19 PM Yes, during the first round Versus is blackedout in local markets in favor of local broadcasters.
doesn't matter though unless he was speaking of SD only watching, the Flyers game is on friday night so no HD from VS, in addition being it is on VS, Center ice doesn't carry any feeds for the package, SD or HD
-Gary
Denman007 04-10-08, 03:39 PM So I can't get SD or HD feed? What other local channel would it be on?
Gary Murrell 04-10-08, 03:41 PM So I can't get SD or HD feed? What other local channel would it be on?
VS SD feed should be up for you on D*, there is nothing else available because center ice doesn't distribute SD or HD of a game on NBC or VS and VS doesn't do HD on thurs/fri, so while the Flyers game is probably in HD on a Caps or Flyers network it isn't available to view on D*, complicated and stinky I know :(

So I can't get SD or HD feed? What other local channel would it be on?
CSN-Philly will have the game locally. Now since both Versus and CSN-Philly are owned by the same company there may be some hope of lifting the local blackout of Philly, but I wouldn't count on it.
I just got off the phone with Versus, the guide is wrong.
VS/GOLF HD will be showing NHL Playoffs in HD this Thursday and Friday.

Anyone in the CSN-Philly broadcast region is in the same boat - if you are 5 minutes from Philly or 5 hours (if there is anyone 5 hours from Philly that gets CSN-Philly as an RSN)
"Distance from arena" is an NFL thing....

That just made my day. Now that the Manassass head-end has fixed VS (funny how that happened about 90 minutes after I called the Executive Team), I should be a happy man. Please don't let me down, Comcast.
Denman007 04-10-08, 06:48 PM Who do I call to see if it's blackout out? D* peeps had no idea. I call them and dude said it depends on if they sell out. lol I said they all sold out - it's the playoffs. Then he said VS probably not black it out.

Called FSN Detroit, issue with HD truck that is being swapped out, HD should begin by the 2nd period.
Announcement should be upcoming on the broadcast.

The Bruins have kept it close after one and thats all we can ask for at this point.
BTW no one on this planet is picking the B's to win this series, so if they do, it will be one of the biggest upsets in NHL playoff history so all the pressure is on the Habs in this one.

Low ratings. Plus there is a crunch on production trucks at this time of the year with basketball, hockey, and baseball all going so there may be an HD truck availability issue.

Gary Roberts grinds his own coffee with his teeth and boils the water with his
rage.
Seriously though, in Pittsburgh it's funny...he went from "oh man...Roberts is back...where are they gonna put THAT old fart...?" to fan favorite in the course of one playoff game. Team full of superstars and the whole town is buzzing about a 42 year old psycho... :D
Ducks did not look too good last night, seems like Dallas is the better team in this series as they seem to have been skating circles around them. And how bout trying to concentrate on trying to score instead of hitting, thats fine in a close game but when your down by 3 or 4 goals it would help if you try and put one in the back of the net instead. Almost seems like the Ducks were oblivious to the score, if they keep that up they'll be out quick.

The Ducks last night reminded me of past Red Wings teams. Just playing it like another game, not grinding out the playoff win. Ducks are in trouble if they don't change that attitude real quick.
CBC HD on VS! Huge surprise!
I have to say... I was quite impressed about that. It was totally unexpected.

For a team that was coming in as the defending Cup champs and as hyped up as they were, that was an extremely underwhelming performance. I picked Dallas in 6, but if Anaheim keeps playing like they did in Game 1, I wouldn't be too surprised if Dallas won in 4 or 5.
diy_canuck 04-11-08, 12:47 PM That Detroit/Nashville game was boooring. I actually fell asleep on the couch for a bit watching that game. Also, are the Red Wings not a big attraction in Detroit? The stands seemed a little empty for a playoff game. Was there something else going on in Detroit last night? Or are the fans expecting another first round exit and aren't even bothering attending? I just found that odd, watching the fans there and then watching the fans in Montreal going nuts throughout the game, it was like I was watching a pre-season game.
Montreal looked very good against Boston, but as another poster mentioned earlier, they should win the series. Bruins fans should just be happy they made the playoffs with the year they had (injuries and all). Although Thomas' numbers are decent, I just don't seem to have much faith that he can win a game on his own (like Gerber for Ottawa), and goalies need to be able to do that in the playoffs.
Anaheim looked pretty weak, although Dallas has improved this year and even more so since picking up Richards at the deadline. Turco played well, he didn't have a ton of shots, but he made the big saves when needed and that is all you can ask.
I didn't get the Calgary/San Jose game at all but watched highlights. Still have to say that Kiprusoff is playing awesome, you definitely can't put the loss on him. Outshot 27-3 in the 2nd period alone, and 43-21 overall.
I'm pretty 'ticked' that I won't get the Pens/Sens game on tv tonight, too bad. I guess I will watch Caps/Flyers to see how Ovechkin does in his first playoff game. I'll also flip over to MSG and watch the Devils/Rangers game. I expect a good game from Brodeur tonight.
Ray Lucca 04-11-08, 01:15 PM I am at my wits end, with Versus and Directv commercial division. We purchase all of the sports and HD packages and the companion Golf Channel, yet Vs. HD has been un-available since the Oct. start-up of the new HD channels. We also up-graded to the new dish and receivers. We have contacted Versus, Directv, the NHL and Gary Bettman directly, the response??? Dead air, nothing. I don't think the genius's even know it is happening. No wonder they get no ratings. Directv says there is nothing more we can buy, and "the games aren't being televised in HD on VS." We have 15 -20 receivers activated, lots of flat screens and the picture quality is horrible without HD. To make matters worse my local cable system Cox, hasn't added Vs. HD so it isn't available at home either. Universal HD also recently went away. HDNet also became un-available in October, I sent an e-mail to Mark Cuban, within 90 minutes 6 people from HD net had e-mailed back and called me, the problem was fixed with Directv in 24 hours, and HDNet was back on commercial choice with the Hockey games.
Anybody have any ideas???

Sounds like the old run around to me. I don't have D* but I'm sure some posters in this thread do and they can verify if they are getting VS in HD on their system. If they are then they are obviously lying to you and I would press them to get it resolved or threaten legal action since you seem to be paying for it but their not providing it!
kcspence 04-11-08, 03:25 PM Was delighted to see playoff games in HD on Versus last night (Comcast in Portland, OR), contrary to the schedule. Have the DVR set for Caps/Flyers on Versus HD tonight, with fingers crossed.
Go Sharks!
Tonights game on VS HD :
Philadelphia at Washington 7:00pm ET
This should be an interesting series, I like the Caps because I think they are too hot right now but the Flyers will try and be physical with them so anything can happen.
big angry 04-11-08, 04:28 PM Also, are the Red Wings not a big attraction in Detroit? The stands seemed a little empty for a playoff game. Was there something else going on in Detroit last night? Or are the fans expecting another first round exit and aren't even bothering attending?
Their attendance has been really down the last two years. I think it's a conflagration of a few different things.
A) They don't have the kind of players that excite people anymore. Guys like Lidstrom, Zetterburg, Datsyuk are obviously world-class but they don't have the obvious appeal of a Steve Yzerman for instance.
B) Michigan's economy is in shambles.
C) The population of Detroit is skewing increasingly African-American. I really hope that doesn't sound racist, but it's simple fact that hockey just does not attract the black sports fan. The people who comprise the Wings core fan base are now content to sit at home in the suburbs and watch the HD broadcast on their big TV set.
OggideM 04-11-08, 07:07 PM As we discuss the implications of Roberts' questionable decision making skills, the Senators are making tee times for this coming Thursday. ;)
By the way, the broadcast on FSN Pittsburgh looked great last night. I'd like so see them bump up the audio to 5.1 though.
I'd just like to see them run the games in HD at all. if the series goes 7 games, we'll get all of 2 massive whopping games in HD here in Pittsburgh
FSN is a complete disgrace and should be boycotted . I guess I'll add them to my WPGH boycott

I believe CSN Philly has the local rights to this game and it should be available on that channel.
Its not Versus fault that the Flyers have an agreement with CSN Philly for local broadcasts.

Were you excepting something else? Versus does not have any local rights in this round of the playoffs.

True, but ironically all three are owned by the same parent company.

How is that the fault of VS?
If you want to blame anybody, blame the local TV station. They have the option to sell the broadcasting rights to VS if they wish, but they obviously chose not to.

The local station is showing the game, his service provider does not carry that local station, somehow that is Versus fault.
Versus has a national contract the local station can not sell them any rights.

What about when it's an away game, on Vs. as a national game, and your local affiliate/network blackouts out the Vs. HD feed and only shows the game on the local SD channel.
Why is this allowed?

The local team owns the local tights that they sold to the local channel. They have a right to show the game without having to compete with the national broadcaster. It does not matter that the national channel is showing the game in HD and the local channel is not.
I really don't understand the idea around here that just because something is in HD, that contracts should be torn up just because someone can only see an SD only station. Its not like there is some legal/moral right to HD content.

it just seems **ridiculous** to me that the city of an in market team gets a lesser viewing experience than the other 90% or so ... rest of the nation ?
sure , contracts exist, nobody is debating that.... my point is are they out of date with current technology ?
at least for me, i refuse to watch SD sports . sure, I don't have a right to it, but they also don't have a right to my viewership. if they don't want to earn it, so be it.

Not bonus coverage as someone said, but like the Flyers in Philly, the HD version of the Avs game is blacked out here in Colorado where we have only the SD feed on Altitude. I expected this, so I am not complaining (well, in a way I am) but I only bring it up to point to the Philly folks complaining about Comcast that the same thing happens everywhere else at this time of year.

I did end up finding it under the TSN coverage listing which is the original source for the game, maybe thats why they left it out of the VS line up. At any rate it can get quite  if your not looking in the right places!

See you soon.
And F@@k Versus. I had enjoyed a great season of a lot of HD hockey through my local FIOS cable. HdNet, GameHD, NHL Net HD(the best) and even NBC. I have to have my co. get Versus HD next year.
Denman007 04-12-08, 09:36 AM You could always switch to a provider that carries CSN Philadelphia.
There is no other provider who has the ST.
I don't like hockey or any of the local Philly teams, but I was hosting an event last night and a lot of people wanted to see the game.
I think the blackouts are a joke. The games are sold out. People have their providers. Why blackout a game? Do they(providers) think people are gonna switch to them who don't already have them. ft
Probably the worst part is that it took D* 30 mins and 3 techs to finally tell me the game was blacked out(which I was 95% sure). Even he programming dept was sure at first. Hey did you try rebooting your receiver? lol

If you look at this from a business perspective the blackouts would make perfect sense. The blackouts protect the teams and the local broadcasters, by allowing them to profit from their playoff run.
People due choose their provider over what programing is available to them. That is why Philadelphia has one of the lowest satellite penetration numbers in the country, because with satellite in Philadelphia you miss a good deal of local sports. You said your with D* because of ST, which is no different then someone picking a provider that has CSN-P because they want to see Flyers' games.
I never really understand threads like this that pop up every so often. For some reason there is a feeling that teams, leagues, and broadcasters should give in on their business plans because some fans can't see a game in HD or can't get a certain game through their provider.
hondo21 04-12-08, 02:19 PM I don't understand why you don't understand. What don't you understand about people wanting to see their local teams play in HD when there is an HD feed available, and voicing that opinion? Do you know so little about human nature that this boggles your mind?
I realize that's not currently the way it is, but the ultimate customers of these teams, leagues, and broadcasters are the viewers/fans who have a right to voice their opinion. If they're unhappy it's ultimately not good for the "business plans." Of course, it may be more productive to do so directly rather than venting on a message board. But then again, posting on a forum like this can encourage others to complain too.

good post, far more eloquent than I can be about it, considering i'm still 'on tilt' so to speak.

I totally understand people wanting to watch their team in HD. What I don't get is the blaming of Versus, local RSN, DirecTv, Comcast, the team, the league, or anyone else involved in the process. It is not like this is new, Versus blacking out games in the local markets was known since the announced their contract with the NHL. When I look at situations like this I always try to look at all sides of the issue, including from the businesses perspective. The decisions about blackouts and what games to deliver in HD usually have very strong and logical reasons behind them. Most of us would probably make the same decisions if we were in the position to make these decisions.
In the end the benefit of pleasing the small number of fans who feel disenfranchised because they can't see a game in HD, is not worth the cost of producing the game in HD. The cost/benefit ratio has changed dramatically over the last decade and will continue to change to the point where the benefits outweigh the costs for every game to be in HD.
Mike4HDTV 04-12-08, 04:48 PM Watching on D*. PQ looks good but not as good as Versus.
hondo21 04-12-08, 07:29 PM I understand the Versus blackouts. But I have a hard time understanding why FSN-Pittsburgh was able to show a substantial number of home Pens games in HD this year, but then when it comes to the first round of the playoffs they can only show Game 1 in HD. The cameras were all in place for Game 1, and they changed plans to air Game 2 instead of the Pirates game on Friday, but not in HD? Why couldn't they show Game 2 in HD? Or Games 5 or 7 should it come to that? I still haven't heard a good reason. Cost shouldn't be a reason for the playoffs.
I'm surprised there were no responses about yesterdays games. I think all three who won yesterday will easily win the series and that means bye bye Ducks. As for my Bruins, I thought they played their best game all year against the Habs but when you end the last 5 mins of regulation and the first 3 mins of OT shorthanded you are bound to lose. As they say just another Saturday night in Montreal. Stick a fork in the Preds as well!
OggideM 04-13-08, 11:31 AM Dallas is indeed looking impressive against the Ducks. Those games also seemed to me (Vs. HD, comcrap) to look the best so far... brightest ice, less blocking artifacts on player jerseys, etc)

No problem Wendel, Ken had started one yesterday as well so I thought it would be better if this thread stayed with the VS or local HD coverage discussion of the NHL playoffs while the NBC one stays separate especially since you regularly contribute to it.
BTW good job on the game today, thought it was one of NBC's better telecast!

Philadelphia is not in the Devils market. I watched several Devils games on Center Ice this season. Why are the playoffs different? I have Comcast, by the way.

mp3trojan 04-13-08, 10:54 PM CGY/SJ on Versus. They are providing the CBC HD feed.
1st time I've seen CBC HD....ever.
coyoteaz 04-13-08, 10:55 PM SJ/CGY on Versus is the CBC feed in widescreen SD. PQ is awful compared to the previous CBC games which were true HD.
And the Bruins finally prevail! We might even have a series now, who would a thunk! BTW two great games tonight both going into OT. This is why NHL playoff Hockey is the best on the planet!
Another double-header on VS HD tonight:
Detroit @ Nashville 7:30pm ET
Minnesota @ Colorado 10:00pm ET
Seems that their televising a lot more games this year and most are in HD which makes it even better. A good year to be a NHL hockey fan!
Saw 3 versions of the Devils @ Rangers last night, all in HD!
Versus did national telecast, MSG and MSG Plus did the locals.
It's amazing that the ancient MSG arena could handle 3 HD broadcasts, but it did. As for PQ, I felt that it went MSG, MSG Plus, then Versus.
Versus did unfortunately have control of the lead [game] camera, and sometimes missed some of the action that the more experienced MSG cameraman would have caught. Otherwise, basically good shows by all.
Next game at MSG on Wednesday there will be 4 broadcasters - Canada's TSN will be in the mix. And they are scheduled to be in HD as well.
SJ/CGY on Versus is the CBC feed in widescreen SD. PQ is awful compared to the previous CBC games which were true HD.
Yeah, that was definitely upconverted SD.
I'm just shocked that Versus-HD actually kicked golf to the curb on Thursday and Friday.

I don't expect that to happen this week or the rest of the playoffs. The only reason it happened last week was because Golf Channel didn't have any tournament coverage due to the Masters. They resume PGA Tour coverage in HD this week.

diy_canuck 04-14-08, 11:47 AM Great weekend of hockey!
The NBC games this weekend looked great as always in HD. Great job guys!
I was very surprised last night to get the Bruins/Canadiens game in HD on a new channel called GAMEHD. It was a feed picked up from NESN-HD and it looked great. Anyone else have this?
VSHD had the Rangers/Devils game on lastnight and thankfully it wasn't blacked out in my area (it usually is as it was also playing on MSG in SD).
Also agree that the Flames/Sharks game looked horrible and now I understand why. I was saying to friends when watching the game that I thought it was a SD feed just converted to 16x9.
I really wish the VSHD game tonight was Pens/Sens. I would rather watch Crosby and Malkin play instead of the Detroit game. Oh well, I guess I will have to watch it in SD on my NHL channel.

'GAMEHD' = HD channel for cable systems for MLB Extra Innings and NHL Center Ice.
At this point - they are showing only MLB... but Sunday night there IS no MLB for it to show.. so it went with hockey...
(and on cable systems, Center Ice was free for the past 2 weeks, thanks to the Extra Innings preview)

kevincburns 04-15-08, 10:07 AM for Game 1 of the Dallas-Anaheim series, the game was in HD on 416-HD on E* but it was the FSN Prime Ticket feed, not FSN Southwest. Is that common? kevincburns 04-15-08, 01:57 PM btw, the Stars game is not in HD tonight on FSNSW or on Prime Ticket (according to the E* guide). I don't get Versus HD so I'm out of luck there for Game 5. Oh well, if we can advance, we might get more HD. Does Versus have exclusive coverage in the semifinals or just the conference finals and beyond? [edit: answer found at the beginning of the thread]
OggideM 04-16-08, 08:37 PM decided to check in on this game (Pens-Sens, game 4) for a minute after the radio description of the reviewed (critical) goal.
LMAO, FSN Pittsburgh using CBC replay angles with inbranded logos.... but we can't use their HD feed.
what a joke. back to the boycott.
Looks like the Wings are in a series, how did that happen?
The Pens disposed of the Sens which I thought would have been closer.
The Rangers will probably get by the Devils now unless they can come up big in the next game.
homcom,
There are games scheduled for tonight on VS did you find out which channels they will be putting them on?

What was up with the Wings game last night. No HD ANYWHERE?? FSD was blacked out, and no HD on CBC/VS.
Also us Stars fans are in for a pivotal game 4 tonight in SD on "My27":(

In Nashville, the Preds-Wings game was on a local access channel on Comcast that didn't even have the right guide information.
I have Dish, and it was on one of the alternate sports channels like the rest of the playoff games. It is frustrating not being able to see these games in HD, especially since they have shown HD games during the season. FSN South did the game via SportsSouth, but the Braves weren't in HD yesterday, nor this game.

yeah I'm hating that. I can't even DVR it while I'm at work...at least I can for the rest of the series (on Versus and/or FSNSW)
homcom,

The NHL playoffs will be seen on VS/GLF HD.
The Verizon Heritage replay will not be in HD.
This applies for both tonight and Friday.
Well I was wrong. I hope this will continue through out the playoffs then. Last year they didn't deviate from the schedule, showing the golf instead of hockey. They are getting smarter and more flexible with programming VSGLF-HD now. Live events in HD are now getting precedent regardless of what the original laid out programming times were. Works for me.
snowcat 04-17-08, 01:44 PM I saw this interesting article on another board: http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/08108/874172-194.stm
The various FSN regional networks carry 40 professional teams -- 15 in the NBA, 14 in MLB and 11 in the NHL. All three leagues are playing in April. Yet in its Houston control center, FSN has the ability to produce only seven games a night in HD.
That leaves a lot of disappointed viewers around the country.
FSN is working hard to increase its capabilities.
For example: A truck, which costs about $4 million, is needed on-site to deliver an HD telecast. In 2004-05, FSN had five trucks on the road -- all rented from Mobile TV Group. Currently, FSN has access to 14 trucks, and it expects to have 23 by the end of 2009.
Even if a truck is on site, if there is no path to Houston, the game can't be done in HD. FSN has seven control rooms in Houston. A new control center is under construction in the Houston area that will enable FSN to do every game in HD by 2010.

This explains a lot.

Thanks homcom!
Looks like us NHL fans have finally got a home, now we don't have to surf the channels to find the game anymore.
Two real good ones on VS tonight:
Caps @ Flyers 7:00pm ET
Flames @ Sharks 10:00pm ET
*Side Note: As a final insult to us Bruins fans, NESN has decided to push the B's to a Comcast SD channel and show a April Red Sox vs Yankee game in HD instead. So anyone thinking they were going to be watching the B's & Habs in HD tonight on NESN, forget about it!

I'm sure the Sox @ Yankees game will blow the Bruins out of the water in ratings, hence the move.
I'm sure the Sox @ Yankees game will blow the Bruins out of the water in ratings, hence the move.
Yes, I know that, BUT it is still an insult!
I bet if the B's were tied 2-2 in the series, they would of came to a different decision because they first announced that all playoff games would be in HD and the Sox would go to the SD channel during those nights, now that they think the B's will lose, they changed their minds. Need I say more?

Not every FSN uses the Mobile TV Group as their primary truck vendor. All of the FSNs use trucks from other vendors throughout the year to fill in gaps that can't be filled by Mobile TV Group.
FSN has the ability to do more then 7 HD games at the same time. Tomorrow they have 8 MLB games at the same time and next Friday they have 9.

Saw that on the schedule last night (Comcast in Portland, OR), and, again, have set the DVR with fingers crossed.
I appreciate the advice you've been posting, homcom. What's your source of information within Comcast? Why the much appreciated change in policy from last season that allows us to have HD playoff hockey all week? Will it continue throughout the playoffs?
diy_canuck 04-17-08, 03:34 PM I was a little disappointed that the Wings/Preds game was only SD on VS, although I only stayed up until the end of the 2nd period, and missed most of the 1st period as the Sens/Pens was still on; so no real loss.
I think all of us on this site wish everything was available in HD. Someday... I hope!
I know I mentioned earlier in the thread that I was happy about the GAMEHD channel showing a Habs/Bruins game on the weekend. Well, lastnight I had 3 channels that had the Yankees/Red Sox game scheduled (YESHD, ESPN2HD and GAMEHD) and of course only the YESHD Channel had the game on, while the other 2 were just a black screen (yes, I understand blackouts). I wish it was possible that these 'wasted' channels could be put to use and show something else, but I know that can't happen. Why would I want to watch April Yankees/Red Sox games on 3 different channels? Maybe I'm a little biased as I don't watch any regular season baseball as I find it waaay to boring to watch on tv. But playoff hockey (actually all hockey) to me is so exciting to watch. I guess that's the Canadian in me speaking out! :)
Anyways, tech talk aside... Although I had the Pens to win the series, I thought the Sens would have put up a better fight. A sweep? That's embarrassing! I have to give credit to the Predators for making it a series against Detroit. It's amazing what 9 seconds can do for a team! All the games being played tonight are going to be great games, but I am really looking forward to watch Calgary/San Jose. Tonight I'm predicting Montreal over Boston, Dallas over Anaheim, Philly over Washington; and the other 2 are toss-ups. But I am hoping for Calgary and Minnesota.
We shall see, enjoy the games everybody!! :)

Go Bruins!

They were rubbing salt into the wound by using the NESN-HD logo but only showing it in SD.
Looks like the Ducks are creeping back into the series, the Stars Better win the next game or their going to be in big trouble.
Did you ever see a more one sided NHL playoff game than the Preds and Wings last night? I havn't.
Yet the Wings needed OT to win that game, I tell you right now if they ever lost this one , they would be done because it would have been devastating emotionaly to so dominate an opponent and then not come out on top.
NBC has a good one today so I hope we hear from wendel soon.

I don't seem why it would be a problem.
WNBC has aired MSGHD (Knicks-Celtics back on Martin Luther King day) - they could easily go the other way....
I've not heard if MSG plans to air the NBC-HD feed on MSG+ HD.
I thought that was the whole point of putting it on MSG+ too, so it's in HD. If they just were going to send it in SD then they would just use WNBC 4.4 exclusively. Cablevision carries it, does TWC?
Great game today on NBC but did not see it in HD, at my inlaws and no HDTV.
Caps are back in but the Flyers's made it very interesting at the end. I knew this would be a great series and it hasn't dissapointed.
I hope my B's can come up big tonight and force a game 7 in Montreal. So far they have been the biggest surprise even for us Bruin's fans.

I hope you enjoyed your trip to DC, and I hope it is not your last of the season. I think the crowd and the team were a lot better today than on Sunday. I hope it was nice and loud for everyone at home! My friend recorded it for me, I'll be sure to check it out!

WOW! That was one of the most exciting Hockey games played in these parts in a long, long time. This Bruin"s team that no one gave a chance is going to a game seven.
This team never quits and they might not have the talent but more than match them in grit and determination. Now if we can only win a 7th game in Montreal, the great upset will be complete.

There were seven home games against the Canadians in Boston this season and not once was their anthem booed so as far as I'm concerned there was no reason or excuse to justify that behavior.
If you heard it last night it was very loud so it was not as if it was only a few people doing it which should disgrace both Montreal and their fans.!
Hope they lose the next series!

I agree that was very bush league to do that.
And then on top of that they go out and riot after beating a #8 seed in the 7th game of a first round. What a bunch of idiots!
PS: I'll even root for the Rangers if they end up playing against them and thats saying a lot coming from someone from Boston!
diy_canuck 04-22-08, 01:50 PM As a Canadian (not a Canadien fan, but a big Carey Price fan) I was ashamed at the way the Hab fans booed the U.S. anthem. Please don't think the rest of Canada would act the same way. A lot of Canadians are sick of the way Montreal (and Quebec in general) acts, so you are not alone. If I recall they did the same thing in last year's playoffs.
Anyways, onto the topic of hockey... it looks like a great double header of game 7's tonight. I know the Caps/Flyers game is in HD, but does anyone know if VS is picking up the CBC-HD Flames/Sharks game? (edit: nevermind, it looks like it is in HD)
I may have to have a 'nap' after work so I can stay up and watch the late game. In a way I'm rooting for the Caps to beat the Flyers, the Caps fans are going to be going nuts! I would also like to see Ovechkin get to the next round. He is a lot of fun to watch. I am definitely cheering for Calgary to beat San Jose though.
I know this is a little late, but both games on NBC-HD this weekend sounded and looked great from TWC-Syracuse! Thanks SNF Mixer!
Enjoy the tonight's games everybody!

Root for the Rangers, and for Bettman's sake root for the Caps tonight!
The little guy is foaming at the sight of an Ovechkin-Crosby series!
A possible schedule for the East if that happens:
Thursday-Saturday - Rangers @ Canadiens ... Saturday night of course is Hockey Night in Canada ... [Detroit would probably be the NBC Saturday afternoon game] NBC would probably stay away from this series as it has a Canadian component.
Friday-Sunday - Capitals @ Penguins. Sunday would be an NBC afternoon game.
That first game last night was great, thought the Caps had the edge in play but that penalty in OT killed them, this was the only series I thought was going to go the other way and the rest were pretty much no surprises.
Round two starts Thursday night and we have some great match ups so it should only get better from here on in.
And yes I will be rooting for the Flyers to beat Montreal although they had just as much luck against them as my Bruins did in the reg Season, but I hope that changes.
Here is a link to the second round schedule.
http://www.nhl.com/nhl/app/?service=page&page=NewsPage&articleid=361357
Note that Versus gets two games in each series exclusively. The games that are not exclusive to Versus (or on NBC) can be shown by the RSN's and Versus will be blacked out in the participating teams markets.
Game 5 of the Colorado/Detroit series on 5/3 is the pre Kentucky Derby game on NBC. That means if that game goes into OT it will be moved to Versus.
machpost 04-23-08, 09:12 AM So is CSN-Philly not carrying the Flyers-Habs game tomorrow night? That schedule on NHL.com says it's only on CBC and RDS. Guess I was hoping that it might pop up on CSN Mid-Atlantic, since they've picked up some regular season out-of-market games from Philly and other CSN-served cities in the past.
That schedule doesn't list RSN's. As I said in the other post if it's not on NBC and not an exclusive Versus broadcast it can be on the RSN. Check the RSN or team's website.
I don't see why not except for The Players Championship on May 8 & 9 is the Golf Channel's premiere event of the year. Will take it week by week, to see how it goes.
It doesn't look like there will be any NHL games on 5/8 or 5/9 so there would be no conflict on VSGLF-HD. There are 2nd round game 7's in both the east and west scheduled for 5/7. The NBC advance schedule lists game 4 of the ECF on Sat 5/17 which would mean that series will start on Sun 5/11 on Versus. Game 5 of the WCF is on NBC Sun 5/18 which would mean that series starts on Sat 5/10 on Versus.

NHL and NBC announce contract extension
NHL .com Apr 23, 2008, 10:30 AM EDT
NEW YORK – NBC Sports and the National Hockey League today announced that they have extended their partnership through the 2008-09 season with NBC exercising its option on the NHL. The joint announcement was made today by NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and Dick Ebersol, Chairman, NBC Universal Sports & Olympics.
“We’re thrilled to be able to continue our relationship with the NHL,” said Ebersol. “There have been positive signs for the league, both on and off the ice. Ratings were up this year; the Winter Classic in Buffalo was a huge success; advertising sales were healthy; and the product on the ice has never been better, led by young, marketable stars such as Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin. We believe this is a sport that will continue to grow."
Bettman said, “This is great news for the NHL and its fans. NBC has been a great partner and its innovations to the broadcasts have helped bring fans inside the game like never before."
MEN 18-49 UP 33 PERCENT:
Regular-season ratings for the NHL “Sunday Game of the Week” on NBC were up 11 percent over last year. In the key Men 18-49 demo coveted by advertisers, ratings increased by 33 percent.
NHL “SUNDAY GAME OF THE WEEK” PLUS FLEX SCHEDULE:
NBC will continue to broadcast the NHL “Sunday Game of the Week” during the regular season, highlighted by flexible scheduling. Under the flex policy instituted this season, NBC can select from up to three games on Sunday afternoons. At least 13 days prior to the scheduled games, NBC, in conjunction with the NHL, selects one of those games as the "Game of the Week" to be broadcast during the NBC window. The other games remain available to the teams' regional carrier but are not televised during NBC's broadcast window. NBC will air eight of its nine Sunday afternoon games at a consistent 12:30 p.m. ET start time. NBC also will offer extensive coverage of the Stanley Cup Playoffs and Stanley Cup Final, up to 15 post-season games in all.
"THE NHL HAS NEVER LOOKED OR SOUNDED BETTER"
NBC's NHL coverage has received critical acclaim, earning praise for innovations such as "Inside the Glass," a reporter position between the teams' benches first introduced by NBC hockey producer Sam Flood. ESPN.com said of NBC's hockey coverage, "the NHL has never looked or sounded better in its free, on-the-air history." The Hockey News called "Inside the Glass," "the biggest innovation to hit televised hockey in recent years" and the Toronto Star said it “is proving to be one of the best broadcasting innovations since the advent of the second camera” providing viewers "with the kind of insights that only someone in that position could get." “Hockey has found a network that will let the sport be the sport," said the San Jose Mercury News. The Daily News said, “[Mike] Milbury has brought reality - and a sharp edge - to the Peacock's NHL studio. He also has displayed something many analysts - in all sports - lack: guts.” “Pierre McGuire’s verbal sparring with Milbury has been nothing short of classic theater,” said the Philadelphia Inquirer.
On May 19, 2004, NBC and the NHL announced a two-year agreement on a partnership for NBC to televise NHL games. That agreement was extended in March of 2007.
http://www.nhl.com/nhl/app/?service=page&page=NewsPage&articleid=361384
The Wall Street Journal is reporting that under the extension NBC will only show games 4, 5 and 7 of the 2009 Stanley Cup Finals. They have previously, and will again this year, show games 3 through 7.

So will games 3 and 6 next year be on Versus or is another deal in the works?
jtthasportfreak 04-23-08, 12:41 PM This is my first (or second I guess) response here and I'm fired up about this. When Fox and ESPN split up the Stanley Cup Final from '95-'98, it really hurt ratings, something realized by "The Baseball Network" in 1995. Keep the finals on Network TV in its entirety, not this 1-2 on cable and 3-7 on network tv crap. Hockey fans are polarized enough.

That might be true but thats all NBC might have been willing to offer. They probably don't want to move their prime time line up for hockey if possible, especially Thursday nights, so having some exposure on a Big Network is better than none. And it's good for VS to have the finals there as well because it will attract new viewers who have not watched it there before and will tune in especially if one of their teams are involved or it's a real exciting series. Afterall they are the home of the NHL now just like TNT is for the NBA and they are adding more subs every year so it might work out best in the long run.

Games 3 and 6 of the SCF are Saturday nights. That's the games they gave up. Last year the Saturday night game (game 3) gave NBC their lowest prime time rating in history. The NHL probably wasn't willing to let them show those games during the day because of Canada so they let them drop them. HNIC gets killer ratings on Saturday night and the CBC always complains about the Saturday afternoon playoff games which draw lower ratings. I guess this was a compromise.
DrCrawn 04-23-08, 04:16 PM As a Canadian (not a Canadien fan, but a big Carey Price fan) I was ashamed at the way the Hab fans booed the U.S.
Happened at game 6 in Calgary too, so it isn't specific to Quebec. You think you're ashamed...
Anywho, congrats to the Sharks. We watched game 7 in HD on Comcast Sports Channel or w/e, on D* and it looked great. ;)
For the Rangers-Penguins Series (at least for NY, but I assume the same would apply to Pittsburgh and FSN-P):
Versus will be exclusive for Games 1 and 4.
MSG will televise Games 3, 6, and 7 (with Versus blacked out).
kcspence 04-24-08, 02:01 PM The guide for Versus/Golf HD channel (Comcast, Portland, OR) shows golf only for tonight. Ugh!
Any idea if Mojo, UHD, or other HD channel will carry the Avs/Wings HD feed, or if the guide is wrong? Looks like Habs/Flyers will be on Center Ice only stateside.

I think your guide is wrong. Mine shows hockey.
BTW there is a round 2 thread now.
