Discovery To Debut Planet Green In June

New Eco-Lifestyle Network Unveils Its First Series, Specials

By Linda Moss -- Multichannel News, 4/8/2008 12:53:00 PM

Discovery Communications will launch Planet Green, its 24-hour eco-lifestyle network, June 4 at 6 p.m., officials said Tuesday.

The giant programmer is rebranding Discovery Home Channel as the new green network. It will reach 50 million homes with more than 250 hours of original green lifestyle programming, a slate that was set to be unveiled tonight at an upfront presentation in Los Angeles.

A diverse group of celebrities and personalities including Adrian Grenier, Tom Bergeron, Emeril Lagasse, Maria Menounos, Tom Brokaw and Tom Green will share their passion for the planet through a host of entertaining series and specials.

And viewers will get a sneak peek at Planet Green’s offerings later this month through a series of video-on-demand premieres and the official launch of PlanetGreen.com.

Planet Green’s original programming combines unique formats and the most up-to-date information on green living with pop culture icons and engaging personalities. For example, rapper/actor Chris “Ludacris” Bridges and rocker Tommy Lee will battle to see who can out-green the other as their entourages hit the tour route.

Beginning April 17, viewers will get a special sneak peek at what’s to come on Planet Green with VOD premiere episodes of series such as Wa$ted, Mean GreenMachines, Renovation Nation and Greenovate.

Simulcast in HD, Planet Green will offer a roster of original series beginning June 4 that includes: Emeril Green, where the noted chef shares his philosophy on top-quality foods; The Green Life, where HBO Entourage’s Adrian Grenier shows viewers how to live the “green life”; Greensburg, about the rebuilding of a town leveled by a tornado; and Supper Club With Tom Bergeron, where the host of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars invites viewers to be a fly on the wall at a Hollywood dinner party.

In the third quarter, Planet Green will premiere Battleground Earth: Ludacris Vs. Tommy Lee, where the two stars are pushed to the limit as they attempt to keep their high-wattage acts on an eco-friendly course.

And following the response to Discovery Channel’s Global Warming: What You Need to Know with Tom Brokaw, the award-winning journalist joins Planet Green for a series of specials featuring in-depth examinations of the crucial issues facing the environment.

After seeing the lineup I can wait.

Planet Green, Discovery Communications’ new green lifestyle channel, will launch June 4 at 6 p.m., Discovery announced. The company also unveiled the launch lineup for the network.

Previously announced shows such as Emeril Green, Supper Club with Tom Bergeron and Battleground Earth: Ludacris vs. Tommy Lee will join new programming featuring Tom Brokaw, Adrien Grenier and Maria Menounos.

Brokaw will host a series of specials for the network following his warmly received Global Warming: What You Need to Know special for Discovery Channel.

Grenier will be featured in The Green Life (working title), a show that will take a “green team” of experts as they help celebrities and ordinary people to become greener in their daily lives.

And Menounos will host Hollywood Green, produced in a partnership with syndicated entertainment show Access Hollywood. The show will be a weekly one-hour entertainment newsmagazine looking at what Hollywood is doing to get green.

Other new shows for the network include:

• G Word, which will explore what it means to be green and technology that can make it happen;

• Greenovate, an eco-friendly home-improvement show;

• Greensburg, a show that will follow the residents of a Kansas town leveled by a tornado as they try to rebuild as a model for sustainable green communities;

• Mean Green Machines, which will explore the green competitors to muscle cars, snowmobiles, etc.;

• Renovation Nation, which will show viewers how to renovate their homes to become greener;

• Wa$ted!, in which the amount of waste in a house will be measured each week and the family will have three weeks to reduce its consumption;

• World’s Greenest Homes, which will take viewers inside houses that epitomize what it means to be green;

• Wrecklamation, which chronicles demolition auctioneer Jodi Murphy as she auctions off doors, windows and whatever she can find from homes that would otherwise be demolished and sent to the dump. The show will follow the materials auctioned as they find their way to new homes and uses;

• Stuff Happens, hosted by Bill Nye, will explore where “stuff” comes from, explaining how things we take for granted are created; and

• The Tom Green Project (working title), hosted by comedian Tom Green, will be the first green game show.

An overuse of the word "green" in titles methinks.

Does the tint on our TVs skew to green when we turn to the channel?

No, but your EnergyStar HDTV will automatically dim by 40%. Al Gore approved.

Emeril Green, where the noted chef shares his philosophy on top-quality foods

So this is where Emeril Lagasse went after leaving Food Network...

I'm assuming this is one of the two Discovery channels that was announced as going in HD this year. If so, I'm wondering what would be the next Discovery network to do the same?

Who's agreed to carry it? I'm guessing TWC and Direct TV?

Wouldn't the other channel be the Oprah channel?

Ironically, Discovery Home already has a couple of green shows that I never watch.

I watched the first eppy of Greensburg last Friday on Discovery HD via D*. It was a good show and I didn't realize it will be a reality series so I'm looking fwd to more. The HD looked amazing, a lot of pop. I didn't know that this will now be on Planet Green until I did a search and found it there and not on Disc. But I don't think it will be in HD. I haven't seen any HD programming on this channel; so does D* only have the SD version now I take it? Too bad if so.

Yes they do, it's been up for a while now. I can't figure out what's so "green" about the gossipy celebrity stuff.

They didn't add it until the first of August. My post was from the 20th of June. :rolleyes:

It used to be easy to tell which networks were owned by Discovery so you knew if you were getting quality or not. Now they've removed "Discovery" from the name of their networks save for the original, Discovery Kids and Discovery Health. Don't expect that to last long.

Well yeah. They turned over the Health channel to Oprah. That will be The Oprah Winfrey Network next year.
