View Full Version : IR2BT vs. PS3IR-PRO
tiger_qc 04-09-08, 08:25 PM I'm only wondering if IR2BT or PS3IR-PRO does;
1. Repeat commands (ie. Cursor up/down/left/right)
2. When doing a power off macro do you still have to answer the stupid question:
"Do you really want to turn off the system" ?
After their last update (version 2.20) I think Sony can't get worse for us with the future updates. I don't really care about how the power on/off command is sent, (macro vs. "power sensing") but I don't want to deal with an update issue.
I used the Siaxis controller to watch my Blu-Rays at the beggining, than I bought Sony's BT remote, than I had this BT issue so I bought the dyno bluwave dongle, so this time I just want to make sure I won't run into another remote problem.
My concern is that I've spend a lot of money for my blu-ray remote needs. If the only difference between IR2BT (55$) where I have to use an if/then statement to bypass the macro (on/off command) and PS3IR-PRO (100$) that will work flawlessly, I will go for the first option unless I might get caught by a future update.
I can't stand my dyno blu-wave any longer.
I understand the difference between the two devices now and why one is 45$ more than the other.
Bruce mentionned that the PS3IR-PRO is updatable, but will we deal with another issue?
thanks,
Gui.
bryansj 04-09-08, 09:17 PM 1. Yes it repeats
2. No, you don't have to answer it since the shutdown command does it for you. The power off macro is (Hold PS button for 3 seconds, hit X, then X again).
It is my understanding that both devices power off using the same method.
tiger_qc 04-10-08, 08:08 PM Ok I'll go with IR2BT.
Thanks

Has anybody written macros with something like the URC MX-350 to provide the equivalent of a discrete off button? I don't know that remote can hold keys for 3 seconds. I ordered an IR2BT box with the understanding that it supported discrete off, but now it sounds like I need to write a macro.

The PRO has a built-in macro for power off.
It works with all of the latest PS3 firmware.
The PRO is readily available.
It has a firmware update capability so that it can adapt to any future PS3 changes. This is accomplished by simply downloading the newest PRO firmware.
It is naive to think that we have seen the last PS3 change. Sony will continue to evolve the PS3 and change how it behaves over time. Any third party solution provider must provide ongoing support after the sale to keep up with these changes for the life of the product.

We used a the Pro as it has the upgradeability as the IR2BT doesnt. The latest firmware 2.40 from sony killed(disabled) all of the IR2BT units. The Pro we installed still worked. That was huge as the Pro we installed was 650 miles away....Worth the extra 45.00.
I havent looked into it completely but know alot are not working now (IR2BT) due to the 2.40 update
We have to send one back we never got to install...could be awhile before its fixed
Best Bet is the PS3IR Pro from Mike @ Schmartz
tokerblue 07-09-08, 06:30 PM The IR2BT does have an issue with controlling the PS3 after intially turning it on, but they have found a fix on the issue. So new IR2BT devices will work with 2.40 and 2.41. IR2BT is also offering to update the software for existing customers. You just pay the shipping and they will pay the return shipping.
So if you're an installer, the PS3IR-Pro seems to be the better option. I have the IR2BT and would rather send it in for a few dollars and have it updated. Hopefully, they have solved the issue for good, but with constant firmware updates, who knows?
Stoner51 07-09-08, 08:14 PM I just ordered a pro for the fact that you can update the firmware over the internet. I think that if sony does another firmware update and the IR2BT doesn't work, then you send it back again sooner or later you will spend the 45 dollars.

How do you use the Pro with a Harmony remote? Sorry I'm a newbie.
I had bought the IR2BT as it was available to me first (got the email from Schmartz about the Pro's availability 2 days after I ordered the IR2BT - D'oh!). When the recent 2.4/2.4.1 problem happened, I ordered the IRPRo to replace it since it's upgradeable via USB if anything changes again.
I didn't even have to reprogram the Harmony One remote - as it uses the same codes, but then I found out the Pro has a built-in macro for discrete power-off, so I added that following teh instructions on the Schmartz forums.
With the IR2BT, I had to keep the remote pointed at the unit for the entire macro to run in order to shut down the PS3 correctly. With the Pro, it sends a single command and the Pro handles sending the macro to the PS3 so I can set the remote down.
It's not a big issue for me, but definitely part of the WAF :)
