Amazon really does have the best overall selection. The problem is that most early releases are long-since out-of-print, and can only be found from resellers (on eb*y or Amazon) for big $$$.

There are so many releases that I didn't pick up because I thought $25 was a bit too much, but that the price would drop eventually to below $20, so I waited...and missed out.

Tower.com is becoming a favorite of mine. Their prices are often $1-2 cheaper than Amazon, they ship fast and free over $25, and I've never had a bad experience. Next up would definitely be Amazon.com. If I need to go overseas, HMV.co.jp wins hands down.

circuitcity.com has decent prices as well and free shipping for over $24.

With Circuit City though the prices are sometimes $1 cheaper than Amazon, that's before sales tax which for most of us makes it comparable to Amazon. Personally, I've stopped buying from Circuit City because they pack their music horribly. Both of my last orders came in flimsy cardboard mailers that were too large for the cases and the cases arrived smashed (literally). Dealing with customer service was equally frustrating (either CC outsources to India or I had uncanny luck). They try to make you return the discs to the store, but my nearest store won't take back items that they do not carry in stock at the store. GRRRR. "Satisfaction Guaranteed" (but we make you jump off a cliff to take us up on it)

With Amazon, if I have a problem (rare), returning is insanely easy and they mail you a replacement immediately without one word spoken to a CSR. They have the best return procedure I've yet to experience. Better yet, I like how they shrinkwrap their discs to a piece of cardboard and place the discs in a larger box to prevent damage. Kudos all around.

This seems to involve subscribing to their monthly CD-queue mailing process a la Netflix, so I would expect there is a minimum extra $7 just for that, even if you unsubscribe immediately. And I would guess you would get used disks, since that is why they have them - to mail out and get returned like Netflix.

Not sure I like the overall modus operandi.

Negative. New discs. Sealed. I signed up, tossed a CD I wanted into my queue, then ordered the 10 other discs I wanted. As soon as they shipped out (which was the same day as the one from my queue), I cancelled my membership online, no hassle, no questions asked. Best way I've found to get a hold of the relatively few SACDs they carry.

What he said. The cheapest new SACDs come from yourmusic. Just cancel after you get them.

As for CHEAP, I was surprised how many SACD's they still have on the shelf at my local Fry's for the same or less than elusivedisc.

Three years ago they had a lot more SACDs to choose from. The SACD selection has dwindled down there.

Not to make you feel bad, but rather to give you hope, I found the dvd-audio of Beck - Sea Change at Best Buy over the weekend for 14.99 - 10% coupon. So I guess there are still a few copies out there.

It's worth looking for but expect to pay a premium to get it unless you get real lucky at some store like Best Buy.

I was walking around Bestbuy and found Roxy Music "Avalon" and a Nickelcreek both in SACD as well as Seal's "Greatest Hits" and Steely Dan's "Gaucho" in DVD-A. They were mixed in with the CDs and I am sure they weren't there several weeks earlier. Can't say they were cheap but available sure was nice. ;-)

At yourmusic.com, there are several dualdisc format (search in album title for dualdisc). So far the 2 I've got, Diana Krall 'The Girl in other room' and Jamie Cullum's 'twenty something' has 24/96 tracks on DVD side and I think it's DVD-A. All for $6.99 or $13.98 for 2 disc.

Excerpts from Wikipedia (not reliable source but easiest to find answers):

The CD side of a DualDisc contains standard 16-bit LPCM audio sampled at 44.1 kHz. On the DVD side, most record companies, with the notable exception of Sony Music, provide the album's music in both high-resolution, 24-bit DVD-Audio (typically at a sample rate of 96 or 192 kHz for stereo and 48 or 96 kHz for surround sound) and lower-resolution, 16-bit Dolby Digital sound (typically sampled at 48 kHz). This is done to allow consumers with DVD-Audio players access to very high-resolution stereophonic and/or surround sound versions of the album while also providing the lower-resolution Dolby Digital stereophonic and/or surround sound which is compatible with any DVD player.

Because Sony has a high-resolution audio format, SACD, in the marketplace which directly competes with DVD-Audio (see next section), Sony Music, as a general rule, only provides 16-bit, 48 kHz sampled LPCM stereophonic (and sometimes Dolby Digital Surround) sound on the DVD side of their DualDiscs. The sound is compatible with any DVD player; however, it does not provide the higher fidelity and resolution of 24-bit, high sample-rate DVD-Audio.

Just don't use the CD side. I can't play the CD side probably 90% of time.

It comes and goes. Seems one pops up once every couple months. Usually only good for 2 days (usually a Monday and Tuesday)

Just signed up myself, unfortunately they only have 17 SACDs now, but they still have some good ones. I know they are a part of the Direct Brands group, which includes the BMG Music Club, anyone know if they do (or farm out) their own CD manufacturing, like BMG does (or did, it's been 10 yerars since I was with them)? THe BMG CDs always seemed pretty good, audio quality wise.

They also have 15-20 Dualdisc offerings, never tried one of those but I am now.
