So both my NEC PX-50XR5 and Yamaha HTR6190 have a "remote in" and "remote out" port.

Each say I can plug it into another NEC/Yamaha device.

Does anyone have any more details? What can I exactly plug in? A stereo 3.5 mm jack? Or mono?

Can I like plug in a IR receiver eye into the in port, and plug in an IR emitter to the out port?

Is that how it works?

Would this work as a receive eye if I plug into the IN port?

im not sure about plugging in the eye, but i do know you can use a stereo(maybe mono)3.5mm or 1/8" jack and hook it to an IR reciever or RF extender and use your universal remote to contol it. I think thats what you were asking right?

Yeah..

For example my TV can't receive the IR signals reliably because the IR window line of sight is semi blocked. So can I just plug in an IR receiver (does this need to be powered) into the remote in port?

Which IR receiver would work?

Or did you mean I connect the IR emitter port from a IR extender/repeater into the remote in port using a 3.5mm mono male-male cable?

And the jacks are 3.5mm, but I'm unsure whether it's stereo or mono ?

Can anyone shed some light?

Here is what I had at one point using my Harmony 890 extender and Onkyo receiver.

I had my RF extender connected to the Onkyo receiver's IR in port using a 3.5mm mono male-male cable. I then used one of the 890's IR emitters and connected it to the 3.5mm IR Out on the receiver to my Nyko Blue-Wave to control my PS3. This in-out combo worked using mono cables and an emitter. I'm not sure if you could use an IR receiving eye plugged directly into the IR in on a device without some sort of powered receiving device.

Hope that helps some.

I don't believe the mini works on the NEC displays, I messed with this once before. The port does work on the Yamaha using a 3.5mm jack

So it seems basically the remote ports take in IR codes, so I can either use it to flash an emitter or connect an emitter output via a mono 3.5mm cable?

Some NECs may use different IR code sensor, so it may not be picking it up. I have a Zalman HD160XT case and the built in IR receiver doesn't receive universal IR codes.

However, at plasma tv buyingguide.com it says here that my NEC 50XR5 can do IR loop through. Hmm

I just had this same thought today. I'm looking to buy a new receiver and saw the IR in and out ports on many of them. Since I have small children I'd like to hide my AV equipment in my cabinet and basically have an IR receiver plugged in the "IR In" of the receiver something like one of these:

And then get an IR emitter like these:

http://www.hometech.com/infrared/emitters.html

and plug it into the "IR OUT" port of the receiver and tape it to the front of the device that I want to control (like a DVD player).

Is this thought process correct?

From the general consensus, the general idea is sound.

But then it depends on what equipment you are using to connect.

What I found is that some receivers may have 1/8" mono jack and it is not apparent whether that accept direct IR or a serialized signal. If it's doesn't accept an IR signal, then you will need some sort of interface module to convert the IR signal to something it will understand.

Fortunately Xantech sells something like that. Unfortunately not all equipment may be covered and documentation regarding what protocols which equipment uses is hard to find (do you need to be part of some secret societ to be privy to this information??).

Interesting. I'll have to do some more digging. My wife is fed up with having to open up the cabinet every time she wants to watch a DVD. Any excuse I can find to upgrade anything in my cabinet is a good excuse. :)
