View Full Version : Harmony help button shuts off Denon receiver
Bampson 04-11-08, 09:59 AM Hello,
I have a strange problem that is driving me crazy. A call to Logitech tech support revealed nothing, and the conversation was cutoff prematurely to boot.
I recently upgraded from a Denon 3805 to the 4308CI. Never had any issues in the past with my Harmony 680, but now whenever I use the help button, for example if the TV did not change to the correct input, the receiver will shutoff every time.
The message comes up as "Did this correct the problem?" and then I have to go through subsequent options until finally getting to "Is the receiver on?". Basically correcting one problem with the help button becomes two.
I've gone through and checked the power settings in the device manager, and it curretly recognizes that the receiver has a discrete button for power on and another for power off.
Is there a way to prevent a shutoff command for being sent to the receiver when the help button is used? All other devices remain on as expected.
Thanks in advance.
BillyBeatnik 04-11-08, 10:52 AM It sounds like it is sending a Power Toggle command instead of Power On. If you use discrete codes, the remote will resend them since it should not make a difference. However, it it thinks it is using discrete codes, but is sending a Power Toggle, that would shut it off.
I would try going into Device mode on the remote and selecting your AVR. Then try all of the commands on the LCD screen to make sure they are working correctly.
You could also try changing the Power Settings and tell it you have the original remote. It will probably ask you to use your original remote so it can verify the On and Off codes. If so, that may fix the problem for you.

Sending a power toggle command does seem to be the case. However, I'm not sure why this is the case since I have already done what you've described and used the original to verify the on and off commands.
The other LCD buttons in device mode for the AVR appear to work normally. Anything else I could try?
saintalan 04-11-08, 11:34 AM Could it be your new device responds to actions from the TV.
For Example you use Help, it switches the TV inputs and the Receiver says Hey nothing connected here I'll switch off?
Just a thought.

I had a similar experience a couple of days ago without making any changes to my setup, but I can no longer recreate the issue. I have a Denon 2807 and a couple of days ago when I pressed help the first time, the remote turned off the receiver. It always seemed to me that in my setup when pressing help, the first action that the remote retries is to set the input on the receiver, so I thought it was strange that it would power toggle first. I was able to recreate that by testing the remote several times afterwards. The next day and today, I tried the same and several other tests (from off to activity then help, from activity to activity then help, etc...) and it never happened again. Part of me says it was just a glitch, the programmer in me remembers the saying: "problems that go away by themselves, come back by themselves."
tokerblue 04-11-08, 09:02 PM Can you list what you have for delays and repeats on the Denon? I have the 3808ci and don't have that issue.

I'm not sure what the repeats are defined as or how to check this, but the Power delay is 3000ms, Inter-key 0ms, Input 1000ms, and Inter-device is 500ms.
Thanks
steveliv 05-05-08, 10:53 AM I am running into the same problem. I am in the process of moving so i don't have my nice entertainment center setup, i am having to do with a 32" Panasonic CRT and two S2 Tivo's. On my Watch TiVo Activity, the command i am using to turn the TiVo on is the Tivo Button. When i hit the help button, that same command is being sent. What is the reason for that? I would think the help button would prompt you to tell what isn't working, before sending signals to your components...

I've since been able to correct the problem after speaking to a Level II CSR. Sorry for not posting back here with the resolution.
It turns out my issue was simply due to the fact that I had the original AVR still listed in my device list. It wasn't attached to any activities anymore, but I was keeping it there to confirm various settings with the new one. For whatever reason once this device was deleted the conflicting signal was gone.
They actually have the capability to run a virtual remote with the devices and settings in your profile, and see exactly which commands are going out and causing various issues. I would escalate your problem to the second tier of support since the first was virtually useless.
