Hope everyone had a good weekend.
I live in the boonies, and needless to say, it's pretty hard to find higher-end used speakers...especially ones that are in good shape. It's even tough to find places to buy them new. Being on financial aid in grad school necessitates that I buy used. It took me a good year and a half, 2 years to put my current speakers together: center: B&W LCR60 S3 mains: B&W DM602 S2 surrounds: 4-B&W 601 S2 subs: Hsu VTF-3 MK II, and older Atlantic Tech...don't remember the model.
I really wanted to find B&W LCR600 S3's for the center and fronts, but gave up and put together the current budget system that sounds pretty decent. Sometimes I'll swap out 2 of the 601's for Atlantic Tech dipoles...mostly for movies.
Anyway, the main reason for my post is I ran across someone locally that's selling 5 M&K speakers and 4 stands. The 3 fronts are the M&K S-5000thx, and I think the rears are the SS-500thx's (they look about 6-8 inches shorter than the S-5000's and are also narrower), which I think originally came with the 5.1 setup...pretty sure they're the dipoles and not the tripoles.
Anyway, the guy is flexible on the price, but I haven't been able to find any similar M&K speakers for sale to gauge what would be a good deal for me and a fair price for him.
I've also never heard M&K speakers, but from what I've read it sounds like these will be a much better home theater speaker than my B&W's, which I'll probably use for music.
So I'm hoping some M&K owners...especially S-5000THX owners or installers familiar with these speakers...can give me some advice on what would be a fair price for 3 S-5000thx (about a 7 out of 10...only flaw is missing acoustic foam around the tweeters) w/ stands, and the 2 SS-500thx surrounds (8 out of 10). No sub unfortunately.
I don't want to insult the guy with my offer...I'd post what he's asking for the 5 speakers, but I'm not sure that's allowed. If you can't post a price in the forum, please PM me if you.
The kicker is the speakers are all packed up like they were going to be shipped. He has moved from the state already, but didn't take the speakers with him at the last minute when the movers changed the price to ship them on him...he has a friend that knows nothing about speakers holding them for him. So I'll have to haul a source over and hook-up the speakers to demo, and I'll only have approx. 30-40 minutes to do all this because of my school/work schedule and the guys schedule conflicting.
Definitely not an ideal way to demo used speakers. So I'm wondering if I should pull the trigger on these if they sound solid, or stay with my smaller B&W setup until some other speakers come around that aren't quite as old as the MK's. But I've read nothing but great things about the S-5000's when used for HT...and the stuff I read about them was posted in 2006-07.
I did see I person selling 2 S-5000thx speakers in fair condition on Audiogon for 2XX.00 even for both speakers, which seemed very cheap. Please help me come up with an offer...I have no clue what is a good deal, an insult, or me getting ripped off as far as price goes, and I've had no luck finding these speakers for sale anywhere to compare prices with.
Thanks for any help you can provide and ideas on whether I should get these as dedicated theater speakers and move my smaller B&W to light TV/mostly music duty. I'm in the process of turning my parent's garage into our dedicated theater, and the space will be approx. 23X16X10. The current space is even larger since it's an open floor plan.
Thanks again for the suggestions/help with reaching a fair offer.
