View Full Version : Opening up a controller??

Was just wondering if anyone's taken the screws out of their controller before to try and clean inside? One of the analog sticks on my new(er) controller is...sticky...and I thought if I could open the controller up and give the mechanism a little polish, it might fix the problem. My only worry is that if I do lift the two controller halves apart, that a million little springs will pop out, making it impossible to put everything back together again!

Anyone do this before?

I've done it before on my old sixaxis when the R2 trigger got stuck. It wasn't all that bad... the only reason it took me so long was because it was like 2AM when I tried to do it... There are retaining springs for the triggers, but that is it. If you can get those held properly, then you will be fine.

Kess,
I have not, but know there are youtube videos of it (specifically for a mod where they change the color of the lights)...you might start there...

^^ Thanks, guys. Good suggestion Kekborg. I found the YouTube video right away. Yeah, I think I'll be able to pull this one off. By the look of it, this guy practically dismantles the whole thing without any worries!

Ahh found a video that has some decent screen shots of the inside, its one of those modding vids that shows you how to put in LED lights into the playstation button

He says the only prob is putting it back together

Great video rwt2006! That's what I love about this board. How cool everyone is to help you out. I have to run and pick up a child from the bus stop...so I will take a closer look at the video later. It's a lot better than the one I found. The only problem is putting it back together is the only thing I'm worried about, though! :p

I did it. Putting it back together is easy once you understand how it goes back together...LOL. Be careful with the reset button on the inside. It is only soldered on at two small weak points. I put mine back together and the button got pushed a little out of whack so I opened it up to set it correctly and it broke off. I can't reset one of my controllers anymore. I was having an issue with one of the analogs sticking but couldn't resolve it. I would appreciate it if you repost in here after you are done with what you used to clean it and if it was successful. Good luck!!
