I know it seems backwards, but I am looking for a way to get from HDMI to coax cable.

I am trying to come up with a way to use adapters and such, but I think the input resolution would need to be downconverted at some stage. You could convert it using HDMI -> DVI, DVI -> VGA, VGA -> RCA, RCA -> coax (RF modulator). I have all of those right now except for the VGA -> RCA one. But, I am wondering what I need to make it 640x480? And would I need to convert the digital signal to analog at some point? And I would rather not change the HDMI signal in, and probably would prefer a hardware based solution than a software one if possible, even though it might cost a little money.

Or should I just spend $500 on a LCD TV that I don't really need, but would fix this problem...

Not aware of any converter to go backwards. You would need to go from digital to analog and the down-conversion process would require a fair amount of processing power.

Does your source have a composite output? Then you may be able to use a wireless modulator to transmit the signal from the source to the TV. Several companies make such devices which typically operate at 2.4GHz (an example is at http://www.lashen.com/vendors/terk/leapfrog.asp#LF-30S).

The only idea about how I could do it using wireless equipment that I figured out was to make a small ATSC digital transmitter and create a TV channel. I do have a digital OTA to analog box that does pretty much what I want to do. Except they don't have HDMI/DVI inputs.

I think I may look into getting a second video card for my Linux DVR to see if I can have one output HD and the other one output 640x480 analog.

It's not clear to me what your video source is. Is it the Linux DVR? Is the problem that it won't output HD digital and SD analog at the same time?

It doesn't output it at the same time right now. But, I have found something that looks to be like instructions on how to get it enabled. Now to see if it works. I'll either break it, or it will be perfect.
