View Full Version : vmc + harmony880 + address 2 = no more aspect command

(posted to a couple of other forums but no replies, so I figured I'd come ask the big boys...)

For the first couple of years, using my old 659, we had no "Aspect" command for media center (it was '04 or '05 then). At some point along the way, not necessarily at the same time, we got an 880, and also discovered some kind soul had added an "Aspect" command to the Harmony database that we could assign, which has been absolutely great (changing the aspect manually is a drag). Have had that running for the last couple of years.

A couple of weeks ago, I picked up a new linksys dma 2100 extender and a small white samsung lcd tv for the kitchen. Great setup, after the initial kinks everyone's real happy with it.

Except, the big problem was that the Harmony 880 in the living room would not only send its commands to the main home theater setup, but they would also make it all the way to the kitchen (line of sight, an extra 25' or so).

With multiple STB's, I'm familiar with addressing, and found a way to change Vista's (and the remote's) address, and updated my 880. When changing the STB addresses, the Harmony database actually had multiple codesets already on file which was handy, but for Vista Media Center it didn't, so I had to relearn the whole set. Unfortunately there is no aspect button on my remote and the one from the database which worked so great for years doesn't work (presumably because it's based on remote address '1', the default, and now the remote/pc use remote address '2').

I would do this the other way around, i.e. change the address on the extender and give up a single-button Aspect command in the kitchen where it's not nearly as important but unfortunately linksys hasn't given us the ability to change addresses (yet...?)

Anyway, does anyone have any ideas? Or an MCE/VMC remote with an aspect button? How does one get an additional codeset added to the Logitech database, along with a manually updated code? Or is this even possible?

I believe I remember reading that the DVD button works as the Aspect control on media center extenders (since they can't play DVDs), have you tried that?

Thanks! But - I just tried that, it doesn't work.

And even if it did, it wouldn't help my situation as Address 1 (which I use on the extender as it's hardcoded by linksys) is not the problem, and I have Address 1 Aspect programmed in to my 659 for the extender.

The problem is with the missing Address 2 Aspect for the main VMC machine...

After speaking with Logitech support (who couldn't resolve this), I've determined that my options are as follows:

1. Find someone who has a VMC remote with an aspect button as well as a Harmony, get them to change their VMC remote to address 2, add a new device to their harmony, learn the command, then call Logitech and ask them to copy the learned command to my device.

2. Same as above, but source the remote myself and purchase it.

3. Find someone who can determine the hex code of the command (Logitech tells me I can email them the hex code and they'll add it for me)

4. Find software that'll work with my USB receiver (standard MCE) that will display hex codes, chart out what I have for address 1 and address 2, and somehow figure out what Aspect 2 is.

Sorry I didn't notice that you were trying to do this for your computer.

Yeah you are going to have to try to find the hex codes for the Aspect button. I did a quick search but wasn't able to come up with anything. You might want to try Remote Central, or The Green Button, as well as trying to contact Microsoft themselves.

Sorry I couldn't be more help.

No worries, and I certainly appreciate the suggestion!

I've already tried remote central and TGB (both of which I've frequented for quite some time, as well as here), no luck though. I suppose this is a rare issue, what with v2 extenders being relatively new, and most folks who use them not using Harmony's (Harmonies?) on other machines within line of sight...

I've pretty much resigned myself to sourcing a VMC remote with an Aspect button and paying prolly $30-$50 for a remote that I'm going to use once for a few minutes, I hope it doesn't come to that but if this goes on for another few weeks I fear I may have to.

While I can't test it myself other than checking back what the remote sends with this code, but try this Pronto hex code for aspect in address 2:

0000 0073 0000 0020 0060 0020 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0020 0010 0020 0030 0020 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0020 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0020 0010 0010 0020 0020 0020 0020 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0020 0020 0010 0010 0020 0010 0010 0010 0010 09BC

I believe this is for address 2. I do have a MCE remote to compare the signal. Would that be the signal sent after setting the address by pressing DVD Menu and 2 together for 5 seconds?

Awesome! Yes, pressing DVD Menu + [Address#] sets the remote address - so you've done this on your MCE remote, and the hex in your post is the Aspect button after doing this? I will email this to Logitech and see if I can get this added, if this works I will buy you the drink of your choice when I'm in NY in a few weeks...

Actually, my remote doesn't have aspect button either, but I put together the hex code based on the info here (http://lirc.sourceforge.net/remotes/mceusb/lircd.conf.mceusb) to get the command code for aspect and then used my remote and an ir sensor to decode the protocol used when in address 2 mode. So I can't be positive it is the right, but it should work.

You can actually add one long hex code to a button yourself without contacting Logitech if you want to try that first. Here is a link with instructions on how to do it. Unfortunately you can only learn one code this way, if you try to learn another it will delete the first one. I did this when I was testing the long hex codes I had found for the discreet power commands for my Toshiba HD-A3, before I bothered trying to contach Logitech. They both worked when I used this tool to learn them, but when I added the power off it deleted power on. After I knew they both worked then I called Logitech and waited on hold for an hour to get them both added correctly.

Anyway here is the link to the instructions.

Dudes! It's working! I had to play with it a bit, once I figured out how to add the code and update my remote with it, somehow it reverted the rest of the codes back to address 1 (prolly my fault), but then I re-learned them all again (except for Aspect) and now...

All commands, including Aspect, are working in Address 2!

This is excellent, I can't thank you both enough! WAF went up 100 points tonight....
