View Full Version : PS3 current price points?
Mikey Palmice 04-17-08, 08:37 PM I am thinking of getting a PS3 for games and blu ray movies.
I don't care about backwards compatibility, or a bigger hard drive and the media reader isn't a deal breaker for me, all though it is nice.
I assume I can get the same functionality with my xbox linked through media player or an external media reader, right?
which PS3's are available now? Is it the 40 gig and the 120 gig only?
Do you guys think there will be a price drop anytime soon? what are the rumors?
thanks for reading
Is there anything else I would be missing if I went with the cheaper PS3?
serversurfer 04-17-08, 08:54 PM It's 40 GB and 80 GB, and apparently Sony won't have any 80 GB models until June (though you might be able to find one sitting on a shelf somewhere).
Other than what you've mentioned, the only other thing that the 80 GB offers is SACD support.
That said, if you have any interest at all in MGS4, you might be better off waiting for the bundle to come out in June, as it will have the game and a DualShock 3.
Edit: Sony seems satisfied with sales right now (and indeed, they can't keep the 80 GB in stock, as I mentioned), so near-term price cuts are unlikely, baring any unforeseen price cuts from MS.
Mikey Palmice 04-17-08, 09:01 PM thank you sir. I have 400 dollars in best buy gift cards eating a whole in my pocket:D
I'm about pick up a 40 GB for my brother, because of the affordability, but one thing that concerns me is the latest trend of these games requiring mandatory installs to the harddrive..Some are huge, Hot Shots Golf install is 5 GB on the HD.
I would like to see them drop the price of the 40 GB sku to $299 by Christmas to start penetrating the mass market.

hot shots golf is a 5gb install?!?!?!? what!?!?!? that's like installing an entire MMORPG on your computer that is MUCH bigger than golf game. i thought almost all (95%) of ps3 game installs were optional to speed up loading or whatever, but not mandatory...
You can pick up a 40gb PS3 (and maybe even a 60gb) on eBay for around $300 like I did. then you can use your gift cards on GAMES! :)
There are a small amount (and increasingly new games) that REQUIRE HD installs -due to BD read speed or something..............I think GTA IV requires a 500 MB install which isn't too bad at all....But 5 GB is ridiculous and will fill my 60 GB drive in no time.
Remember it is easy and not too expensive to upgrade the PS3 hard drive with any 250 or 320GB 2.5" hard drive.

loganhunter2002 04-18-08, 04:53 PM Well, I just used 500 worth of Gift certificate at Circuit City to buy my second PS3. I had to use it since Circuit City will be going out of business anytime now. :D

ChocThunder 04-21-08, 12:14 AM I need to pick up a PS3 for Blu Ray use specifically. Where can I find the best deal on the 40 gig model?

They have another couple years in them at least. They are definitely leaving the playing field, but it isn't nearly as soon as you seem to think. :)
eddy_winds 04-21-08, 01:18 AM It's 40 GB and 80 GB, atm
What is that my mom GTA IV. I have seen that in several places is that a 4chan meme or something?

they'll cut the price again around christmas, i would think. but with gta4 and mgs4 coming out, who could wait that long, honestly? i know i couldn't. just get the 40 or the mgs bundle.
