Zomg, i can't win (after my victory over optical sound hdmi video with 360 i run into this)

Playstation 3, updated to newest whatever updates you can download
Using HDMI video to my LCD westhinghouse 42"
Optical audio to my HK reciever 5.1 sound

As soon as the ps3 boots up, the receiver is playing this very loud constant beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep sound

If I leave it on HDMI sound and video only (by just letting my LCD produce the sound) there is no beep at all - obviously just having 2channel sound from my LCD is the same pain as hearing that loud beep.

History:
I had never updated it but once a few months back, and was one of the folks that had the flashing screen westinghouse problem - so i was using a DVI/HDMI cable to plug it in for video and optical still for audio

I had no problems with that, one day i plugged the HDMI in just to see if it still flashed - the flashing had stopped but then all the sudden this beeping came through my reciever

I tried to google it and people are saying its the RROD for ps3's and takes like 6weeks mailing it in to get it back from warranty.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Why don't you just keep using DVI/HDMI? You are not gaining anything by using just the HDMI if you are still going to use optical for audio right?

i'm using optical for sound...

i can use HDMI sound from my 2channel LCD but thats pretty sad

Is your optical out set to Bitstream or PCM? You might get an audible warning if you are trying to send an encoded stream while you have it set to output only PCM?

that could be it, but i've tried just leaving every option off audio wise

is there really a RROD on the ps3?

If there was, it certainly wouldn't manifest itself in this manner.

First of all, an error wouldn't report itself via a continuous, annoying beep that happened even on a disabled interface.

Second, even if it manifested as some sort of beep played over the audio interface, it would play over all audio interfaces, not just one.

Third, an error beep would never sound over the audio interfaces but rather it would play over the PS3's internal beeper—the one that beeps when you turn it on and off.

Lastly, I too googled for this, and the only person I saw calling it the "PS's RRoD" is you.

Clearly something is wrong, but it's not even clear that it's a problem with the PS3. Did you try plugging it in to another optical input on your receiver? Did you try plugging something else in to the same input the PS3 is using now? Did you try plugging the PS3 in to another piece of equipment entirely. Did you try resetting the A/V output on the PS3 by holding the power button for several seconds when booting up? These are all good things to try before you run around the Internet yelling, "OMG MY PS3 HAS RRROD!!!!1"

If your PS3 does need to be repaired, you can rest assured that the turnaround time will likely be far less than three weeks.

try to give me some kind of credit but i do appreciate the thoughts

1. i've reset the ps3 (holding on button) about 100x trying literally every variation with diff hdmi/optical options at some point everytime the receiver will start to beep
2. yes tried both optical inputs on the receiver with diff wires
3. yes its quite odd that the noise is coming from the receiver not the ps3
4. no, im not the only one saying its RROD - but there was no official post on it just some ppl whining that their first gen ps3s (i got mine when it came out) just randomly broke - people were saying they were taking it back and just getting a diff one
5. i just got my new receiver the yamaha 95 page thread one lvx663 and its still beeping - HDMI video and audio 1 cable atm - and thats with going manual on the audio settings and turning every audio option codec thingy off
6. Yes i need to call ps @ 1-800-345-SONY (7669) and find out wtf is going on
7. this isn't rocket science, i' had it working for along time and one day it randomly blew it self up :p HENCE MY ANNOYANCE. My ps3 has yet to even play a single game, i used it to play about 4 diff blu ray dvds and a couple of demos that is the main source of my frustration the thing is literally new

Thanks for reading and giving it thought.

edit: just for sg's i reconnected the DVI cable with optical sound (again for the xth time) and no beep came even after juts sitting there for 5mins - so i go to turn the sub on and it triggered the beep

i've lost my mind.

Cheer up. We've isolated a variable. :)

When you turned the sub back off, did the beeping stop? Did you check all of the connections on the sub, including power? Is the beeping coming from the sub or the mains? All of the mains, or just one/some? Have you checked the connections to those?

Have you tried checking the PS3 optical port? make sure there isn't anything stuck in there?

I would ask you to check for ground looping problems and ask you which powerpoints/switch boxes all the things are plugged into, but optical is suppose to be impervious to that. But it's good place anyway to do all that because it yields you better sound and picture

Since you have a new receiver now I'd use HDMI sound, that way you get hidefinition sound too :) it's just great, far better sound than my 360(or Wii for that matter)

to answer your question, yes the sub made the noise start, even if the sub was not plugged into the receiver just turning it on made it start that beep

funny part is, if i use HDMI only aud/vid it beeps anyways w/o turning the sub on (plugged in or not)

when i used the original av cable with just the yellow to my lcd and the red/white to my receiver sound was fine, until i turned the sub on

so you would think ok the sub is creating some kind of issue (even if its not plugged to the receiver input) but it starts to beep w/o touching it anyways on hdmi

i plugged the same ps3 into an entirely diff sys

720p sony tv
optical sound to an onkyo system from frys

No beeping at all..

sigh, its not the ps3 just my audio setup

even though both receivers (HK and yamaha did make the beep)
it might be the LCD

thank you...ya i feel stupid posting like a total moron on here but honestly if someone else runs into that problem and finds this thread, then my headache was worth it

my old HDMI cables were from monoprice and honestly i figured they'd be the same i had only ordered some blue ones just for fun (10ft blue hdmi 1.3a 6bux or wutever) and tried it out due to last resorts

just hope no one else goes through that, only to find its a simple problem
