View Full Version : Moved from 60 to 40 and very happy
Just thought I would mention I had a 60gb, sadly since its in a cabinet, nothing I did could keep that thing cold, and stop it from kicking into hyperdrive which sounds like a jet engine.
So that combined with the fact I dont have any ps2 games, I ended up selling my used 60, making 100 off of it, and getting 40.
So far the 40 has remained cool, and never kicked into high power mode.
Just thought if any 60gb users who dont have a well ventilated system, you should definatly look at the 40.
whyidie 04-18-08, 05:58 AM Tempting. Very tempting. I've got a 60GB out in the open, but its never been as quiet as when I first purchased it.
Maybe I'll try compressed air/vacuum cleaner first to see if getting the dust out helps.
maximuslcd 04-18-08, 08:16 AM I have a 40gb and have never even heard it running, after hours of leaving it on it doesnt even feel warm...it was the right choice for me.
VeeArSix 04-18-08, 08:20 AM I'd really like to go to a 40, but the no backwards compatibility thing is a total deal breaker.
Cygnus311 04-18-08, 10:07 AM I have a 60 in a cabinet (with ventilation) and it's silent, and not because it's in a cabinet. If I slide the door open, I still can't hear it.

sojodave 04-18-08, 10:18 AM I got a 60 last November, and when it is over 75 degrees, the fan kicks in on mega-high. Has anyone tried the cooler contraptions made by logictech?
smoov280zx 04-18-08, 10:38 AM Lots of variation huh? Ive got a 20 from launch, that you cant hear running unless you turn off the tv and everything, even during a game or movie. Ive got a sony tv too, so maybe they just whisper to each other
Daekwan 04-18-08, 11:57 AM Alot probably has to due with the ambient temp in your home. Some of you guys live in Florida.. others in Massachussetts.
Think about it.
40gig for myself though. No need to ever play PS2 games or SACD's.
Kingram 04-18-08, 12:11 PM I have a 60 that is very quiet and I live in Arizona. The first 60 I had was a little noisy and I exchanged it a year ago.
tleavit 04-18-08, 12:21 PM Ive had a 60 for 1 year and its been screaming like a Jet engine every since. Hell, even when its in hybernation the thing i screaming. I can hear it when I open the door to my basement and walk down the stairs sometimes.
My 60 was silent if i left the cabinet open, but it was not practical. And it got really hot.
My point is in comparison the 40 in the same cabinet, (which is not that well ventilated) stays much cooler, and never gets as loud as the 60.
I noticed one thing though, the 60 seemed to blow hot air out of the side and the back, creating alot of hot air that needed to go somewhere, from both the side and the back. The 40 blows it all out the back where my small amount of ventilation is, and the side just feels cool.
ratbones 04-19-08, 04:41 AM Yes the 40 has the 65nm chip set too.
I'd say the 40 is certainly the best console for Blu-Ray priority consumers and the 60 is best for game priority users.
jasonstiller 04-19-08, 06:26 AM My 60 has been super quiet for over a year.

my 60 is super quiet to and i live in south florida
SurfingMatt27 04-19-08, 12:49 PM my 40gb PS3 is farely quiet but after a few hours kicks into fanspeed 2..which is normal i hear.
jponte55 04-19-08, 07:54 PM My 60 has been giving me fits with the noise for over a year. I just assumed everyone that said their machine was quiet was full of it. My breaking point was when I played burnout for an hour then watched I am Legen on BD. During the quiet scenes I couldn't here the movie due to the fan. Today I sold my 60 and got a 40. Its night and day for me. I've been gaming for over 2 hours with no noise! Very pleased. Thanks to the OP for giving me the idea.
I thought I would use the SACD and backwards compatability more but I haven't really since I got it.

tick221 04-19-08, 10:54 PM I've been thinking about doing the same thing, I like the idea of lower power usage and noise.
For me the noise between the 60 and Nov 2007 40 is the same. The 40 only puts out a fraction of the heat of the 60. My 60 put out significant heat like a computer. The 40 blows mildly warm air out.
I too was really happy with the 60->40 upgrade. I know I'll upgrade again whenever Sony releases the next PS3 model that has a new cooling system, money permitting.
SDouglas 04-20-08, 01:09 AM I have a 20GB picked up on launch day. Swapped out the drive for a 160GB one, hardwired to my router. It's in a separate equipment closet that has ventilation. Never given me a problem (knock on wood).

Why do people think no backwards compatibility is a deal breaker? If you have ps1 or ps2 games dont you have a ps1 or ps2 console. And with a ps3 why would you even want to play older games on it? Out with the old and in with the new:D.
P.S. That was just my opinion by the way, not bashing you for calling it a deal breaker:p.
Slacker George 04-20-08, 06:55 AM I don't want to spread any FUD but anecdotal evidence suggets the 40's might be a little more prone to disc read errors. But it's still probably a rare occurance overall.

Same here. The 60 was silent, but now its somewhat noisy. I tired compressed air and vaccuming it and it got better but not like it used to be. I am almost tempted to open it up and really clean it.

What he said. Same boat here.
askifan04 04-20-08, 12:31 PM 60 is doing fine

One person on another thread here reported that after reformatting their drive, that the fan was less prone to going to the highest level. Perhaps this kind of resets everything. You could backup all you saves/files and do a reformat and see if that helps.
Massiso 04-20-08, 02:01 PM I had my 60 since day 1 I had to vacuumed it 3 times since I bought it (dusty vents = high fan noise) it works every time, it last about 3 to 4 months be fore I have to do it again, and I couldn't live with anything less than 4 USB ports I use them all and the SACDs that I have are equally important :)
Rakesh.S 04-20-08, 02:30 PM I have a 60 gb ps3, and I had serious noise issues -- it didn't matter whether I played a bluray or a dvd...the fan would go into 3rd stage after about 20 minutes and it was way too loud.
I put two 12V 80mm fans on the vent side, to blow air to the outside. I watched AVP Requiem with DTS HD MA on Friday, and the fan never even made it to the second stage.
Here's how it is setup.
The fans were $1.20 each at newegg, and I used a spare power supply that I had lying around to power the fans.

tommyv2 04-21-08, 02:42 PM Do like I did - put it in a closet. Get a 60/80GB then, all the features, none of the noise cons. It cost me $16 for a 15ft HDMI cable from Monoprice, and I've never looked back.

60gb has the best backwards compatibility. It plays all PS1 and PS2 games, as it incorporates the hardware of a PS2.
The 80gb only incorporates some of the PS2 hardware, so it plays the vast majority of PS2 games without a hitch and all PS1 games.
The 40gb has none of the PS2 hardware and plays no PS2 games but all PS1 games. It is however cooler and quieter, as it runs on smaller die PS3 Cell chip, so it consumes less power and thus produces less heat (lower fan settings, so quieter).
The expected progression right now is that the 80gb may move to the same smaller Cell chip soon, and the RSX graphics chip to do the same around August.

I'd like the ability to play SACD's, but it's not a deal breaker. I also cannot fathom why I would need so many USB ports...

If you do a search on this topic, there are many, many, many threads covering the bases on this.

The 40gb may or may not be enough space depending on your gaming and multimedia habits, so you may have to upgrade down the road (not a big deal, it takes any standard SATA laptop drive).
Some people think 2 USB ports is not enough. For example, the EYE camera requires one, and if you connect a flash drive, or an external hard drive with music/movies there they go.
As to SACD, I have never used one, but I do know that at least the 60gb and 80gb versions do play those. The 40gb does not play those (the hardware was removed).
I would say your best bet is the 40gb. Make sure you get one that comes with a Dual Shock 3 or a bundle (the soon to be arriving MGS4 bundle has a 80gb, DS3 and copy of MGS4 for 500, there is also a GTA4 bundle with a 40gb). The Dual Shock 3 is essentially a SIXAXIS with rumble added back in after Sony ended the Immersion lawsuit.
