View Full Version : Why Does My TV Turn Off

37" LG30 Flat panel. Purchased two weeks ago.

I have expanded analog cable. The QAM tuner in this TV lets me tune in HD versions of all the local channels. I also found an HD version of TBS a couple days ago.

The HD version of TBS has been fine for the last couple days. However, today there's a baseball game, and when I changed to the channel to it, the TV turned off. If I try turning it on, it turns right back off.

After a bit if troubleshooting, I find that if I unplug the cable then turn on the TV, the TV stays on. If I then tune away from TBS and then plug in the cable, everything is fine. But as soon as I tune to TBS (this HD version), the TV turns off. Quite reliably, if I unplug the cable and tune to a different channel everything is fine. Needless to say, I deleted this channel from my lineup.

Is there some sort of signal the cable company can send along with a channel to turn off your TV (they probably want me to buy digital cable to tune in TBS in HD)? Is the cable company turning my TV off during this game?

Thanks in advance.

It seems that any clear QAM signal that has no PSIP data can cause all kinds of crashes on tvs. My Vizio is prone to freeze up and require unplugging when tuning a digital channel with no PSIP data.

FWIW...
I have one problem digital OTA channel that always powers my set off. Not only that, but it also causes the TV to go to "setup mode" when powered back on. Fortunately, it's a Spanish channel, so it's not a issue for me to keep it deleted.

In your case, I assume that TBS-HD is on your provider's digital tier and probably (should be) encrypted. But, it shouldn't cause your set to power off.

Since you do not subscribe to a digital tier of service, you could call and complain, but they may not take any action and just say, "... the TV is the problem". ;)
